Hortus Botanicus Tour - Plant One On Me - Ep 075

- Hortus Botanicus based in Amsterdam, Netherlands is steeped in history. It was established back in 1638 by the city municipality. Originally it was named the Hortus Medicus, which focused as a medicinal herb garden, as it was a response to the outbreak of the plague that was ravaging the area. Now, however, it serves as a respite for itinerant passersby and locals.
Though I went in the dead of winter, the interiorscapes of the botanic gardens had much to see, including some drool-worthy cycads with their own stories to tell.
Special thanks to Reinout for taking time out to give us a tour. And I do apologize for the audio. Some parts were quite noisy due to the greenhouse operations there. More information on the Hortus can be found here: www.dehortus.nl/

I love that you let the guy speak his entire passages without chopping them up. That's so rare on youtube lately. So many content creators cut and chop sentences to make them faster and more hype.
I find it hard chopping the edits up because everything my interviewees say are so interesting. Glad you feel the same way as well. Thanks for sharing.
i live in South Africa so it is really interesting to see people actually be interested in the plants that we have in our yards.
NakedAndLaughing sadly I do not have one, but that would be an amazing addition to my succulent & cactus garden!
Yes, I was intrigued by how they wanted to maintain that connection. I love asking how they make choices of what plants get chosen. There's only so much space!
It was an amazing video! And it is a new addition to my bucket list.
i was born in joburg but im living in uk currently and an avid collector of houseplants so im always scoping around for south African species too make my space more like my home country
Matty Wyche that's great! Luckily there is a bit more rain than in joburg 😂
Visiting Amsterdam for the first time in a few weeks and plan to visit Hortus. So happy for this video. 😊
I was there in the 90s and it was absolutely stunning and rich in history. If you're a plant lover this should be a pilgrimage on your Bucket List. Thanks for taking me back, Summer! 😊💕 🌱
My pleasure Peter.
I'm from Amsterdam. It is so much fun seeing you in our beloved Hortus, Summer. I actually got married in the Hortus in august of 2018. It has a magical and serene ambiance, which just added to our beautiful green-filled day. There is so much to learn, admire and marvel about at the Hortus. I would like to invite anyone visiting Amsterdam to come see this little slice of heaven. And by doing so supporting their work and making a small contribution to their continued existing. Love en groetjes uit Amsterdam
The quality of this video is amazing! Very informational about this place and so historical. Much love! ❤️
So glad you enjoyed. Had fun shooting it, and luckily had two camera folks this time!
very informative, qualitative content. you can really tell the difference in the content creation and quality of info when somebody has studied and invested serious time in this field. thank you very much!

Shortest tour yet.

couldn't get enough of the smell. Wanted to bottle it up!
As an American that is employed by a Dutch institute and does research in South Africa, I hear the content here as a super whitewashed history. Where is the history of collecting alongside the atrocities of colonialism, obtainment of land and its knowledge through forcible abstraction? Rather “our history” that your Dutch expert retells is praised for preservation of collection, that is control over collection for hundreds of years.
He did talk about the Dutch east indies and that back then it was used to show their riches. But why would he say more about it then that. Its a botanical garden for studying and preserving plants. Its about the plants
A little bit ashamed about that guy.
The Netherlands have a very evil past with their VOC. Nothing to be proud of.
