- The tallest three sided obelisk in the world, this monument to the Duke of Wellington nearly never existed!
The idea for the monument was first mooted in 1817, two years after the Duke's famous victory over Napoleon at Waterloo. Originally a triangular pillar was to be topped with a bronze statue of Wellington, with a total height of 140ft. Months later, however, support for the monument had waned and the obelisk was wasn't completed for another 30 years. The statue of Wellington was never added.
In 1890 the monument was rebuilt after a lightning strike. The new monument was taller, reaching it's current size of 175ft.
