Hello, Matt. Thank you for making this video. I started in Freelancer a couple of years ago and now I’m one of the top Architects in the site. I do agree with most of the advice you’re offering, however, I don’t think that’s enough to gain high value projects nowadays, there’s been a massive decrease (at least in my work area) of these projects in 2023, the amount of low budget projects is ridiculous and discouraging to be honest. I’m in the Preferred program and I’m verified, but I see no improvement, too many fake clients and unawarded projects. So, my question to you would be: How to gain high value projects when there’s a massive shortage in the market? And how to keep your fees when there’s so many people willing to work for scraps? I never lower my prices because I know the value of my work, but it’s hard when so many freelancers cheapen their prices daily.

Let me try to answer your questions:
1. We all suffer right now (The whole global economy) and I have a team with 30+ people, so imagine the stress of knowing that you need to come up with salaries hahaha
2. That being said, I think that is important that you look for more than one place for clients - Freelancer has periods when it is quite and periods when it is crazy busy, so if were you, I would look for the cold email outreach tactics, grants, online contests, reach out to development companies and offer your services, etc. etc.
3. I think that the 6 month project strategy (At least) is important for both businesses and freelancers - It is always possible that we can run out of work, so we need to be as ready as possible to react to that.

Which other platforms would you recommend? I work in Freelancer and Guru, but Guru has less projects than Freelancer, so, the situation is kinda the same right now.
On the other hand, which months do you think are the “quiet” periods of Freelancer (besides January, which I think is the quietest)?
I’m not sure about using the tactics mentioned in point #2, I think reaching out directly to clients may generate annoyance and it could also be seen as spam which harms the possibility to gain their business, is there a way to avoid seeming intense or annoying with these tactics haha?
Finally, could you please elaborate on the “6 month project strategy”?

I've been on Freelancer for years, but my category (voiceover) has really eroded on the site. There are almost 0 jobs worth bidding for as an American voice talent. Most jobs want to pay you less than minimum wage for your work.
I'm glad to see that that's not necessarily the case with other categories.

Well I have years as Freelancer and I applied most of what you describe but still evry time I get less project's since seems that every day most and most of the clients prefer who charge the less than who have best portfolio

Yes, it is true and I agree - To be successful, you need to carry many different hats on you, and really be good at what you do. I believe that the answer is a perfect combination, as I both had amazing young employers, and horrible older ones, so it is up to you to prepare yourself and understand who is the client at the beginning. But we can do this!

Unfortunately, there isn't much that you can do, but if the budget is the issue, you can both agree to work on a smaller bit of work until they extend it.
Regarding UpWork, I think its great, but Freelancer is still better for me.

@@trulymsf I did 2 exams(passed) and I placed 20+ bids this weekend. I even paid for almost all of them. The problem is that the client doesnt even see the bid...I think its because theres 50+ automated bids in the first 5 seconds....

Its impossible to get your bid ranking because every bid will have 50 automated proposals in 2 seconds ffs
I dont agree with that, I have hundreds, if not thousands of comments on my posts that people got projects because of the advices I gave. Sorry to hear that you are having a different experience.
This video is funny because Freelancer is plagued with auto-bids, projects that are unclear, incoherent or completely impossible and the vast majority of projects do not have a "winning bid" at all. If you look at the bids that are not sealed they are often incoherent nonsense written by AI with completely unrealistic budgets based on the work requested. Any Geo-Locked project in the UK will receive no bids, not one. I check out a couple of "companies" that were bidding on projects and they were all fake. Freelancer is essentially grifting money from subs and people posting projects and giving nothing in return, unless you give them more and more money of course to become "verified" which doesn't mean anything at all. It's a good idea, badly executed. Also, also, pretty sure a lot of the comments on this video or fake.... just a feeling but here we are.
My experience is different and I didn't start nearly as early as some.. Over 1.5m in earnings, and over 500k in active projects, but I do agree that there are quite some issues.
The truth is I can't afford that 29 dollars currently. If you have other arrangements that favour me, I would really appreciate it .
