I prayed for an electric starter on a street-legal dirt bike back when I was riding trails 30+ years ago, imagine trying to use a kick-starter on the side of a 30 degree hillside. There is NO good way to do it, and every time I killed my XT-250 on a steep hill, it was too tight with rocks and/or trees to get turned around & coast down enough to start with popping the clutch. It becomes a delicate dance on the side of the hill on one leg, bars turned just so, and try not to go down too far or you're going over the side, one way or the other. I never fell down a hill, but I sure got mighty close! Hahaha... 😳
What a great build! Your Rubicon Trail experience revealed a need for a different steed in your stable. Even better that it's street legal and you can hit the trails out your back door. (jealous!) I've watched and practiced some of those beginner trials skills that Barry from OZ has posted -- figure 8's, static balance, log hops, etc - on a 1986 Honda TLR 200 vintage trials and those skills transfer over to other bikes so well. A great confidence booster. And Pete is so cute.
Nice job on the bike, just watched your latest Oroville docudrama, well done on that too, no comparison exists. I bought a Yamaha XT-250 new in 1981, used to haul it around on some baskets that attached to the front bumper of my full-sized Chevy van, so every time I went on the road for a week or more (pro musician), I could go trail hunting, or make my own trails... Turned out to have a warped head, kept breaking valves, and after it was about 2 years old, Yamaha finally decided to replace the head instead of just fixing the valves & sending me back on my way (3x IIRC). Lots of fun, but I also wished it'd had an electric starter. I eventually went to a full-on street bike, a used Suzuki GS1100E. I rode it for quite a few years until I decided I was pushing my luck & I got out of cycling altogether. Now, it's just a C5 Corvette ragtop for fun. Enjoying all your video work man, new subscriber here, going though a bunch of your vids. All good work! 😎 OH, I had a buddy that rode Trials races, he could pull his Trials Bike up to a dead stop without putting his feet down, no problem. Not I. I did try to ride an Enduro course in northern Indiana about 1983, got nearly beaten to death by tree branches & vines, decided that was not my kind of fun. Hahaha...🤠 ONE more thing, I see you have some "Barkbuster" hand guards, good for slow putting around, but if you have a street-legal trail bike, I found some full hand shields that completely covered your hands on the bars, easy to attached with a plug that went into the end & clamped on the other side of the controls. Those are a wintertime lifesaver, keeping the wind completely off your hands. Hands get cold even if you wear snowmobile gloves, but getting rid of ALL the wind makes all the difference in the world. They looked just like these, tinyurl.com/z2ard4d (click on "Proceed to this site" TinyURL didn't usta do that!) and were about $20 back then (mine were molded plastic, much bigger than I've seen in today's searches, shaped more like this fabric covered model, but the edge had a turned up lip to direct wind away better), WOW prices have really gone up!!!

We have taken our boys every summer ,camping ,swimming ,fishing and out rock hunting and I wished that they could experience more, like learning how to ride a motorcycle,the one thing that I wanted to learn so badly as a boy growing up! Back in 2008 (during the great recession) I bought a nearly new condition 2001 XT225 for $1500 from a desperate seller. I'm 6' 240, so a little big for it, but I wanted a small bike for trail riding. Speed was not necessary. I proceeded to spend another $3000 on it, over $1000 in suspension mods alone, including a Works Performance rear shock, to deal with my weight. New higher Renthal bars, foam grips, mirrors, tires, 4mm thick super heavy duty tubes, Clarke 4 gallon tank, Seat Concepts seat kit (installed by a local upholstery shop) kickstarter from a TTR-225, centerstand from a guy on ADVrider who no longer makes them, FMF exhaust, rebuilt and rejetted carb, replaced pilot air screw with one that can be adjusted by hand without tools from Kientec, completely stock airbox, including snorkel, rear rack from Immix Racing. Pelican case mounted on the rack, replaced handlebar mounted cable operated choke with one that attaches directly to the carb from ProCycle (they have a LOT of good XT stuff) new chain and sprockets (stock gearing) I keep two chains, non O ring, that I swap back and forth. I keep one soaking in oil while I use the other one, then swap them. Actually soaking them in oil does a lot better job than spraying chain lube on them, and it only takes a few minutes to change them. I also picked up a nice 70% complete titled parts bike with a 1200 mile engine, good frame, wheels, and lots of other good parts. I am a trail rider not a racer, and this bike fits the bill perfectly. I would have to say that the most important modification I've made is the centerstand. It has saved my bacon several times when I had a flat tire and absolutely nothing to support the bike on while removing the wheels. On my last bike, a gen 1 KLR650, I has a milk crate bolted to the rack. When I had a flat, I emptied all the stuff out of it, unbolted it, flipped it over, and lifted the bike up on it. That should work well for the XT225 as well, depending on the rack you use.
wow! good job! regarding the center stand...with this small bike I just lay it down, turn fuel off, and remove wheel...kinda pain to reassemble though (on it's side)....lol.
I had some neighbors that would party till the cops shut them down every saturday. So 8am sunday morning I'd hop up on their porch with the dirtbike and ride a wheelie down the front of the house and jump off the end of the porch then load my bike up and go to the river. You know what they called me everything but a nice guy when i would get home. 😂 i drank with a restrictor plate. They drank for the hang over. Good times. 17 years later we have all moved to defrent places but still keep in touch. Cherish your neighbors because your next ones could be no fun at all.
Hi Thanks for the valve adj. tutorial. I’m adjusting the rear shock for more stiffness, but can’t see how far I can turn the nut up . Should I be cautious as to how far I turn it . I’m packing a lot of gear and want to go the limit . The suspension is extremely soft on the xt225 and causes trouble on loose gravel roads .

I got it as a project bike and plan to do much of the same as you have done with yours so I'm finding this video series on your XT225 to be most useful. Keep up the great work. Would you happen to have any idea what the model number is on those Renthal Fatbars you picked up used? I like the rise on them from what I can tell from your video and I'm definitely interested in bars with no brace. I like where you’re going with this bike. I’m considering buying one myself, but I don’t know whether to go for the carburetor model or the 250 with injection. One thing about changing countershaft sprocket’s. When you go smaller,/fewer-teeth, your chain wear accelerates greatly. Back in the 80s, Kawasaki dropped their countershaft sprocket size down to an 11 or a 12 tooth on their GPZ750, so they would be the quarter mile king of 750 street bikes. Honda 750 , or a Suzuki, they generally came with 15 or 16 tooth countershaft sprocket’s.When Kawasaki did that trick with the counter shaft sprocket just to top the charts at the dragstrip, customers chains at the dealership I was working at were shot as soon as 5000 miles. Instead of the load being shared by three or four teeth, the loading on one or two teeth is the result..when your sprockets are worn out, they ware your chain out
Its a soild bike if your intrested. Needs some tlc. I just ordered one of these plastic tanks but it leaks out of the peacock. And the horn doesnt work. Besides that your goood to go

I added the kick starter to the wife's 2006 XT 225, I got the kit for $100 and it took literally 30 minutes to install. Best upgrade ever!

Good point Harry! The carb on these can be fussy if not used much. I would prefer injection...but it's a slightly larger, heavier bike.
