Funny how the French failure to meet agreed performance milestones is OK but the activation of an exit option due to those failures is a 'stab in the back.'
Yep they literally hate the UK, the fact that the UK were the 'go to' country for the US and discussed all this in total privacy, really really hurts them.
The problem is not the end of the France-Australia contract, the problem is the way Australia ended their contract with France. Australia simply didn't inform France, playing a double-game with the USA and making lose money and time to Australia and France. So, yes, there will be an expensive compensation and not in Australia favor my friend.
Besides that the UK has just achieved Quantum Encryption and Communications, and that causes a HUGE headache for China and Russia. Morrison made a slight reference to that. British are world class on surveillance and monitoring, even the Americans know that.
I will give credit to the British concerning their surveillance and monitoring technologies. They are one of the bests in the world. I still think that the USA surpasses everyone in the field. But I don’t know that for a fact.
The French don’t know what a days work is. Had the Australians continued with the contract its highly unlikely anything would ever have been delivered.

Given time and the whole of the Australian annual budget who knows what the French could have come up with ??? Even a 2050 version of the old "K" class submarine might have come out of the Normandy shipyards. The UK and US currently share nuclear sub technology. I suspect that developments by one country cannot be transferred to another nation without the agreement of the country that developed the technology (e.g., I understand that US subs use British technology in their propulsion systems). I expect that means that the agreement to transfer nuclear sub technology to Australia needed to include both the UK and US for any technology transfer in this area to go ahead.
UK bits are minimal and just need an “ok”. US part is the reactor which is the most important. I agree with the senator, you wouldn’t need the UK for this sub deal. A UK sub is more suitable for Australia. But it won’t be Astute.

The French nuclear subs are 2nd only to the top rated no expense spared yank submarine. Maybe safer also if lower enriched fuel rods are used .However they have weapon systems not interoperable with USA/UK system. But much specs on the subs is classified, not much is really revealed.
Well... except that Australia historically has had a non nuclear proliferation policy which is why they bought diesel subs in the first place. This has obviously changed overnight.
Possibly, if you have the rescources, in infrastructure, technology, personelle and finance to be able to run a fleet of nuclear boats. Australia can’t easily find crews for it’s conventional subs, that doesn’t bode well for the nukes, if they ever arrive. Meanwhile, by breaking the nuclear arms propagation treaty, Australia becomes a target for nuclear missiles, not only from China. Not a smart move.

From what I've seen, no one in the Australian government has a clue as to what sort of undertaking is ahead of them. The demands that will be placed on the RAN are tremendous. I'm certain that the patriotic and diligence sailors of the RAN will raise to the challenge. However, there is no excuse for the government and people of Australia not to do their best to support those fine sailors. If the Australian government is actually serious about doing this, it's not just another 90 billion dollar program that will end up producing nothing for the Australian people, then the RAN must send a prospective crew to the US to begin training now. Both UK and US are currently designing their next subs. UK soon to finish its Astute construction program and will have engineers and facilities free. Australia's small number could be a good test-bed for prototyping new advancements. Whilst the crew and engineers required are in training, may get the next design with the first few initially built in the UK. The question I have, who in their right mind would order diesel powered subs in this day and age? They obviously have absolutely no idea of the needs of the Armed forces.
Diesel subs and nuclear subs fit different niches. Diesel subs are much cheaper even over long periods of time. Nuclear subs, however, are far better for long term deployments or long distances. This is critical to the US due to being flanked by oceans to deal with any foreign enemies and so nuclear vessels are very important for us. Most nations only need subs for patrolling territorial waters or for being part of a task force or battlegroup and so will always be easily supplied with fuel. Which means diesel subs are all that’s needed for most nations. Especially since the US handles the bulk of international trade lane security. Australia considering nuclear subs is because their sub fleet will need to counter Chinese aggression and so will benefit from often operating long term away from other ships and so could not refuel. This means nuclear subs would be much better for the current needs of Australian defense.

I have no opinion of whether Australia will be better served with the US subs than the French. Diesels have some advantages over nuclear power. But I think Biden owed it to the French to discuss the deal with them before finishing the deal with Australia. Not to get their permission, but to keep them in the loop. That's just being a good ally.
Yes, the French didn't have a design for submarine on the shelve. So they needed to design them first. That stuff takes time. In the mean time the US has these designs on the shelve and they can just build one with the requested features. And that's why the French needed 5 years to still have not a physical U-boat.
No county should ever ever go into contracts with France. Nth Korean sub launches ballistic missile today from under water. Australian sub launches torpedo. Wake up Australia from dream time.

You’re both missing the point on this announcement and in how it was done. Cmon. Take a step back snd have a think about AUKUS. It’s not just about submarines.
Australia were being shafted by France who now want compo despite having already paid $2.4bn. The subs would have been obsolete by the time they'd been delivered and would also be a fraction of the use of a nuclear boat.
Even the attack nuclear powered submarines are past their use by date. They have to move around to find targets and so are vulnerable before and after action. The nuclear armed ones hide in the 70% of the world 🌎 which is ocean stealthily waiting for their one time order. We should get remote controlled submersibles, no crew, cheaper, expendable and the remote crew can take risks just like the remote pilot of a drone.
@@warrenklein7817 you do realise I meant attack subs and not nuclear ballistic missile boats. Completely different platforms with very different roles.

Twice in one century France showed they aren't a military nation. Why on earth did our politicians and "expert" bureaucrats choose diesel AND France too? Maybe the kickbacks were worth it.
It's going to be 10+ years before you get a domestic nuclear boat. In the interim put RAN personnel on 688s asap and then take delivery of them on lease as they are retired early. This will keep the number of allied boats in the Indo-Pacific up.
I used to work for a multi national company and one time I was tasked with translating technical specifications from English into different European languages. Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, no problem, all sorted in 3 weeks. The French section took 6 months!

Naval group took Australia for a ride over-promised and under-delivered. Also, Macron is up for election; looking strong makes him look good even tho he's very unpopular at this time. Also, the reason we the UK were brought in is a lot of technology on the US subs is developed by UK companies also with Australia going in this direction both the UK and the US do training exchanges programs to train crews on new technology and procedures we have done for decades. And it makes sense for Uk to be involved in training current and next-generation submariners in operating and maintaining a nuclear power submarine. In terms of what Australia would do well, that's for them to decide in regards to would be a good fit; well, on paper, the Virginia class is the bells and whistles of submarines, but it needs a crew of 130-140 to operate it the Astute class carries similar ordinance and is quieter than the US version but more importantly it requires a crew less than 100 to operate it. Australia would be best served going with either one as a off the shelf program to meet its needs and then develop a future design later with a maturing domestic industry. The boats would still need to be built domestically, which is important to Australian interests and both the USA and UK have or are doing this with Australia anyway
Oooh, a common USA, UK and Australian sub. That sound interesting. Any chance Australia would be willing to field a fully nuclear boat (armed as well as powered by)? China's nuclear threats would make me incredibly nervous if I was Australia. You can't expect the USA or UK to engage in nuclear war with China on Australia's behalf.
The reason France was left out of the liasson is simply that they bring nothing to the table. Australia gives the U.S. much needed port facilities for subs and ships beyond Guam, strategically pinning down the South China sea and keeping China from dictating military transit through it. It also allows Australia, a proven tough fighting ally, to sleep more soundly at night. As for the nuclear powered subs not being nuclear armed, since they'll be configured to U.S. specs all that's needed to make them nuclear armed is the transfer of nuclear tipped torpedoes and tomahawk missiles.
Thank you Turncoat you think we owe the French something we should of told the French to shove it 30 years time those subs would been better at the tip
Why take 18 months to discuss what kind of nuclear powered sub to buy when both the UK Astute class and the American equivalent are already in production. The Astute class is recognized as the quietest sub and takes a smaller crew to operate, the American is larger with a larger crew. Whichever sub Australia chooses they are likely to want the British Sonar suite which is again recognized as by far the best available. If the Government gets its finger out the Brits are likely to double their production of the Astute class which is bang up to date and comes with the Best sonar as well; as being the quietest.
Even if we buy them off the shelf, Australia needs all the infrastructure, equipment and expertise to maintain them locally. We need partners that can help us set all that up. Then there are the operational aspects. There is a lot to gear up for. And in all probability they wont be exactly off the shelf.
@@DavesShed They likely would be, as they are still building Astute boats, but have finished most of them and slots are opening up that Aussie boats could fit into. Also as they are being built it is an ideal time to bring over Aussie personnel to learn techniques & systems to build most of the boats in Aus, while the Facilities for doing in Aus get sorted out whilst they are training. It is ideal as long as the Aus & UK get their fingers out, the tripartite agreement is to do with the nuclear reactors that are used, so the US will be onboard, and the reactor fuel will have to come from America anyway.
I think all the Australian politicians who took kickbacks to ensure the contract went ahead should give the money back to France. This would compensaate France and save them the embarassment of having to ask for it back.
Australia has had it easy for generations because it is its own continent and distant from most threats. Those days are over. Now its time for the Aussies to put their big-boy pants on and become a world power.

Not old school, they were to be AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) diesel-electric boats. They are OK for litoral combat but they lack the capacity to generate a large amount of electricity as the batteries cannot perform as a nuclear reactor can.
if it costs that much should we just continue making the french subs too? Maybe we can sell them? Afghanistan might be interested in a Navy, they have a competent army now with all the us equipment
As an American my personal preference would be for Australia to share in a next-generation convergence of fully shared defense systems, taking whatever is best-in-class from wherever it may evolve. In defense the key always needs to be effectiveness, never just scoring short sighted political or economic wins for domestic advantage. Given America’s recent elections hijacking, though, it might not be ideal to rely too heavily on any one partner nation. Just as we currently are stuck with very poor and erratic political leaders, the UK could lurch off in some mad direction too - Lord Adonis and his Rejoiners, perhaps? I presume Australia could as well, with home grown nutters. From here, NZ seems to have taken that route.

Do you feel safer knowing we will have a sub in 10 years. Without nucs it's almost useless, unless it's just there to block shipping lanes........
Australia fought for Britain during World War I and II. After both world wars, Britain has received war reparations from Germany. Has Britain cheated Australia?
Funny how the French failure to meet agreed performance milestones is OK but the activation of an exit option due to those failures is a 'stab in the back.'
France is probably more miffed because the new deal involves the UK.
Yep they literally hate the UK, the fact that the UK were the 'go to' country for the US and discussed all this in total privacy, really really hurts them.
The French owe Australia compensation for wasting our time.
And Turnbull owes Australia $3b for signing the contract
Just BS

The problem is not the end of the France-Australia contract, the problem is the way Australia ended their contract with France. Australia simply didn't inform France, playing a double-game with the USA and making lose money and time to Australia and France.

And fair enuf !
True. Definitely a Tripartate Agreement.

Possibly, if you have the rescources, in infrastructure, technology, personelle and finance to be able to run a fleet of nuclear boats. The question I have, who in their right mind would order diesel powered subs in this day and age? They obviously have absolutely no idea of the needs of the Armed forces.
Diesel boats (subs) running on battery are the quitest subs in the ocean.

As said in the vid, there is blame enough to go around. We should have got out earlier and with less PR fuss. But Scomo was big noting himself - and that will cost us millions.
French as usual ripping folk off if the agreement is delayed substanly then the agreement is void in my view. Also my brother served on hunter/killer subs and he doesn't glow in the dark
So why should we pay for a bag of chips when we could get a steak for a little bit extra?
In 1957 the NUCLEAR POWERED submarine USS Nautilus sailed under the Polar ice cap...64 years ago!!! i imagine nuclear technology/safety etc have advanced a lot since then!

Throughout this debacle, I’ve been questioning why Oz didn’t use BAE Australia?
It’s an absolute No-Brainer, in all aspects!
i worked for BaE, theyre not competitive enough, dont have the system or skills for submarines and are generally too busy maintaining frigates
Your number one error was that you made a deal with France.
We have let nobody down. France has proposed the all new nulcear sub class Suffren in 2016. The contract was to build the diesel /electric sub in 2023 to 2032. Ask to the 80 australians engineers working in france , they saw the research and developement about their subs.
This new design was complicated to do because based on a nuclear sub transformed in diesel sub .
HAve you seen the reactions anti french here ? It 's totally insane. The anglosphere hates completly france . They are totally crazy ! ( i m french ) . I have never seen the US , UK , Australia so crazy vs France ! I didn't imagine that in all my life .
This world anglo is completly mad ...
I’m an American. I don’t hate France.
I'm British and don't hate France. The French reaction seems bizarre.
You’re both missing the point on this announcement and in how it was done. Cmon. Take a step back snd have a think about AUKUS. It’s not just about submarines.
Please elaborate and enlighten us
Australia were being shafted by France who now want compo despite having already paid $2.4bn.
@@warrenklein7817 hum, Oz is not buying nuclear subs, they will only be powered by nuclear. If they ever get them.
Of course they let Australia down, you would have been lucky to even get one with the French making the sub. l'ennui.
Should we look at the LNP they the ones writing the contract for Australia and the French. It always someone else fault with the LNP.
l'ennui, l'ennui, l'ennui : what does that mean ? You know ?
Underlying problems dealing with the Submarine Agreement between France and Australia led to the contract cancelation. The situation is not as it seems at first take.
Well for a start off the"Contract"nearly doubled before it even got off the table. The subs were obsolete before they even got off the drawing board.
I doubt that there are many people around the world who have been satisfied with the outcome of ANY French Defence Contracts over many years!
Twice in one century France showed they aren't a military nation. Why on earth did our politicians and "expert" bureaucrats choose diesel AND France too? Maybe the kickbacks were worth it.
Visit Gay Paree !
I don't think you need to worry Virginia or astute will do the job. Better than ww2 technology.
France should be compensating Australia for the massive blowout
It's going to be 10+ years before you get a domestic nuclear boat. In the interim put RAN personnel on 688s asap and then take delivery of them on lease as they are retired early. This will keep the number of allied boats in the Indo-Pacific up.
That's a plan.
You would think that would have to be a possibility they are considering. Probably also deploying as trainees/observers on British nuclear subs.
Having had over four years of bad design experience with the French in the past, I'm glad to see our Aussie mates are out of this.
I used to work for a multi national company and one time I was tasked with translating technical specifications from English into different European languages. Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, no problem, all sorted in 3 weeks. The French section took 6 months!

The Frech have great tech and they will get a break payment but, the US/UK pick is better. The Virginia boat is the best in class.
The Virginia boat is best in its class? Who states this? a credible source? anyone can say something is the best. It does not mean it is true.
They said the same about the latest American fighters as being the best. Plagued with quality and reliability problems and overpriced with the worst delivery times. They are not even as good as they say they are being equivalent with the latest Russian and Chinese versions built at a fraction of the cost.
“It would be smart to ask you”. There’s the glaring mistake right there. Most politicians will veer away from what ordinary people consider to be smart. SMS = Small Man Syndrome.

Thank you Turncoat you think we owe the French something we should of told the French to shove it
30 years time those subs would been better at the tip

Shame to see Australia the way it is
Foreigners and liberals took the spine out of the country
can you imagine dealing with our boomerang throwing POLITICIANS, and now have a world wide reputation of telling lies!
Let them eat cake.

I think all the Australian politicians who took kickbacks to ensure the contract went ahead should give the money back to France. This would compensaate France and save them the embarassment of having to ask for it back.
They make the worlds best atomic power stations. Maybe we should throw them an olive branch and order a couple of those instead.

France let down Australia by offering old school conventional subs instead of nuclear…
Not old school, they were to be AIP (Air Independent Propulsion) diesel-electric boats. They are OK for litoral combat but they lack the capacity to generate a large amount of electricity as the batteries cannot perform as a nuclear reactor can.

The customer is always right.
