Thanks for the vid, Eric. You're the best C70 UA-camr out there. I love how your videos seem to originate out of pure raw curiosity (instead of looking at UA-cam search trends). I'm curious to get your take on false color. I've missed my exposure a few times because I misinterpreted which gray was middle gray (typically in mixed lighting on the face where pink, green and gray intermingle in strange patterns). Seems the SmallHD monitors have a friendlier version of false color where you simply see blue and green where the face is. Do you have a take on the different false color implementations? I'd also love to know more about log footage and IRE boundaries if you're looking for future video ideas. Thank you for the hard work, man. I know these videos are time-consuming to make. Big fan!
You can remove all the info stuff from the Shinobi by tapping on the screen. You’ll get a 100% clean feed. And you tap the screen again if you want to bring the menu back.
I have one of the T7s and think it's the best on-camera monitor I've ever used. The "pages" navigation and presets are incredibly useful and this thing is so bright, it's almost ridiculous. It's plastic but very good plastic and the only time I actually hear the fan is when I have the backlight at 5 or above and it ramps up. Those situations where I need the backlight that high would almost always be outdoors for exteriors so the fan noise is a none factor. The colors are so much more accurate than my 5" Shinobi or Ninja V, we always joke about the "Atomos Look" as it really makes everything look brighter and more saturated than it really is, the T7 is much closer to what the camera is actually recording. The built in LUTs are very handy, just shot a mini doc with a Fuji X-T3 with FLog and the LUT for that was so helpful in judging exposure. Very, very happy with the T7, will be buying two of the G7s for our C300 MKIII packages. Great job Osee!
Great review and user tips Eric - I wish I'd sent my super-warm coloured Shinobi 7 back sooner but I'm stuck with it now! I did get the Swit monitor which seems identical to the Old T7 so I'm loading my LUTS into it as per your recommendation - thanks!
Hi Eric, I've watched your every single content on UA-cam and enjoy all of them as a C70 owner. I also bought T7 and am very happy with one exception. It seems when you shoot RAW or 4K DCI on C70, T7 somehow stretches image vertically to fit 16:9 so the image is kind of distorted. This can be fixed by changing the max HDMI res to 1080p from 4K/DCI. Do you have the same issue, would appreciate if you can take a look at how your copy and C70 works. (Have the exact same issue with R5C)
@@SoundItOutFilms Thank you a lot for the response! There’s also another issue which is the backlight leak on the edges of the display. That actually annoys me but what annoys me more is the fact that there are no alternatives to T7 and its capabilities in this price range. Do you still think this is the best budget 7-inch monitor? Please let me know what you think 💭
@@ShugoAkatsuka I feel ya. For it's price I think it is a great value but personally I've upgraded to a 7" porkeys. It's like triple the price and has worse menus... but it has very specific anamorphic support I need plus none of the issues you mentioned. I now use the portkeys for my camera monitor and the T7 for a client monitor. bhpho.to/4eqQNdZ
@@SoundItOutFilms Thank you so much again for your valuable information. I’ll take a look at the monitors from Portkeys. By the way, I do look forward to your C80 contents in the near future. You have so much influence on things a Japanese man purchases :)
My biggest issue with the Atomos Shinobi is that it is REALLY soft compared to the OSEE. It makes it more difficult to judge focus and the 2x punch in feature on the Atomos is total garbage(like 480p garbage) while on the OSEE you're still getting a sharp image.
I've got that one too, but I love the focus assist - the trick is to use the Focus Peaking mode at about 5, then Focus Assist (which is what we normally expect from Peaking), and dial it down to 2 or 3. That helps it to be a bit more refined. Have a tinker with it!
Thoughts on the Atomos Shogun Connect? Do you think that it would be worth getting? The build quality, fan, and the IOS, streaming, and proxy file upload capabilities?
I had the Osee t7 and had a lot of problems with it. I went through several from the manufacturer before deciding to just drop it Hopefully yours works out better. I’ve been using another cheap one but I’m finding it kind of inaccurate, small 0:06 HD is probably finally going to get my money😂
My first camera monitor was the shinobi 5. I hated it almost immediately. The boot up time. The cheap build and materials. I hated it so much I ended up buying a used SmallHD 502 bright for a good deal and I’m never looking back.
on the one hand you say the shinobi is too loud and that's crucial for your audio and in the next scene you don't use a windshield on your mic in a windy situation xD
Hey Eric! I have the original T7, and after watching this video, I was planning to buy the new one hoping to get more accurate color (I also have a c70). However, I discovered that going into the calibration settings of the T7 under Calibration LUT>Input Levels and switching from Video to Full seems to give me an image that’s VERY close to the c70’s built-in monitor. Did you already have that set on your T7? How does it compare between models? LOVE your channel. Just finished watching all of your videos. 😂
Question I just grabbed the Shinobi 5 and I was wondering you can help me out I'm having a problem with the luts I have c70 and the Luts are not displaying accurately I swapped out cameras to make sure and they displayed well on my R5 can you let me know what I'm doing wrong or what settings are needed thanks
Thanks Eric, Do you have an affiliate link for this monitor yet? I'll wait a few days and check back before ordering... thanks for all the awesome C70 videos!
I got an OSEE T7: the panel had insaaane backlight bleeding and the UI is kind of clunky. So I was looking at the Shinobi 7, but the fan noise seems really bad... It really is hard to find a good 7" offering that doesn't cost a fortune like all the SmallHD products...
My assumption of the False color issue you're having is related to the video range and gamma curve. A full video range is normally 0-255 with the data range being 16-235. The full video range for instance includes true blacks(-5ire) and super whites above 100IRE(up to 105, but sometimes higher) whereas the data range goes from 0-100. When you start adding in the mix different gamma curves that may or may not clip above or below these levels, things get more complicated. An example of this being SLOG2/3 which normally clip at 97IRE on the waveform monitor. This is on purpose and is because of where the data is stored in the video codec. There isn't much/enough data above that 97IRE to make sense, so it never reaches data values above that, whereas if you use a different gamma curve such as Rec709, it will use the full "Safe" video range of 0-100IRE or 16-235 data values. Speaking form the perspective of sony, if you modify a picture profile and change the knee slope and percentage, you can change the clipping point and the highlight rolloff. If you can use zebras, you would set the zebras at the clipping point and use that for over exposure monitoring and stick to false colors for middle gray/skin tones.
Why monitors still have such thick bezel in 2023, for the price we pay, i really hope we can get high quality screens. That being said, monitors like the Lilmon 5 from OSEE are acceptable for the price.
Oooh that’s a rough situation. There’s really no way to send a Lut or View Assist mode over HDMI? I’d use a different monitor that has non-rec709 false color like the T7 or mostly anything besides the Shinobi7.
You did the greatest thing dump ATOMOS. Way over priced bad product customer support is the worst you can get buy anything here this new monitor is great and supports much more than anything out there avoid ATOMOS from my very bad experience
