Helsinki (and everything inside Kehä 3) is the most un-Finnish place here. It's like going to Berlin when you are supposed to be visiting Siberia. You should've arranged a week-long summer cottage trip to central or eastern Finland. You need some mökki and rantasauna by the lake, some makkara, beer, bask under the midsummer Sun and enjoy life in the middle of nowhere. No neighbors, no problems.

Swedish speaking ability provides no practical benefit for the average Finn, and the average Finn is outside those "fairly large" Swedish speaking areas. In fact, this requirement to learn Swedish can be a hinderance. As a case in point, I've heard of a Somali woman who had studied in Russia on how to be a midwife, received updating education for that in Finland and could speak English, Russian, Finnish and Somali fluently, but she wasn’t considered qualified for the position of midwife because she couldn’t speak Swedish. Speaking on a more general level, the time Finnish students are forced to waste learning Swedish would be better spent learning actually useful languages like German, Russian, Spanish, ect. And if it were an optional subject, it wouldn't drop the average grade of those who rightfully have no motivation to learn it. And speaking of Åland, the demographic is reversed there, meaning that 5% speak Finnish as their native language, while the vast majority is Swedish, and yet there is no requirement to learn Finnish. Seems like a double standard. And by the way, why isn't learning Russian mandatory? Swedish has been picked for some arbitrary reason I still haven't figured out. Since Swedish speaking Finns are so concentrated in certain areas, nothing's stopping the vast majority of them from continuing to use their native language in their every day lives even if the remaining 95% of the population isn't forced to learn a language they'll most likely never need. Besides, English is the lingua franca of most of the world and Finland is certainly no exception, so there's no need to cater to minority languages. In situations where one might "need" Swedish, one could most likely make due with English.

In finland regular poor finnish man makes its own alcoholic drink called "kilju" or booze called "pontikka" and drinks these at home byself wearing just underwear. We call this "Kalsarikänni". Its free and fun.
Kalsarikänni is "trouser drunk" in translation, and to "trouser drunk" you don't need "kilju" which is sugar fermented with yeast ("sugar wine" in england), or "pontikka" which is a very strong distilled beverage, made usually from "kilju". Just a 24 pack of beer, or a bottle of vodka will do.

To receive regular state social benefits you have to be registered as living permanently in Finland, which I highly doubt beggars from Romania do. You need an actual address for that. If you have an idea of where to go it's definitely a trip worth for a week.

Well, since I'm a Swede, and happen to know that Alko just swiped the Swedish concept of the "Systembolaget" (system-company - short for: Public sector Company for alcoholic beverages rationing and control System... sort of?) right off - I can confirm that yes, in Sweden at least, we really would be drunk 24/7 without those prices - as can be seen in historic artistic works and documentaries, Sweden had the same drinking culture as Russia and parts of Eastern Europe - alcoholism was WIDE, wide, wide -spread.
So, I guess, since Finland had been occupied and infected by Sweden's Swedish-ness for so long, maybe the recently freed Finnish law-makers and nation-builders figured it was for the best, just to be certain, to establish the same thing, Alko, in Finland? To keep us all on the straight and narrow. To hold back the track-suit tendencies. ^^;
Even with the prices being so high, we're still one of the leading alcohol consuming nations in the world.

Swedish speaking ability provides no practical benefit for the average Finn, and the average Finn is outside those "fairly large" Swedish speaking areas. In fact, this requirement to learn Swedish can be a hinderance. As a case in point, I've heard of a Somali woman who had studied in Russia on how to be a midwife, received updating education for that in Finland and could speak English, Russian, Finnish and Somali fluently, but she wasn’t considered qualified for the position of midwife because she couldn’t speak Swedish. Speaking on a more general level, the time Finnish students are forced to waste learning Swedish would be better spent learning actually useful languages like German, Russian, Spanish, ect. And if it were an optional subject, it wouldn't drop the average grade of those who rightfully have no motivation to learn it.
And speaking of Åland, the demographic is reversed there, meaning that 5% speak Finnish as their native language, while the vast majority is Swedish, and yet there is no requirement to learn Finnish. Seems like a double standard. And by the way, why isn't learning Russian mandatory? Swedish has been picked for some arbitrary reason I still haven't figured out.
Since Swedish speaking Finns are so concentrated in certain areas, nothing's stopping the vast majority of them from continuing to use their native language in their every day lives even if the remaining 95% of the population isn't forced to learn a language they'll most likely never need. Besides, English is the lingua franca of most of the world and Finland is certainly no exception, so there's no need to cater to minority languages. In situations where one might "need" Swedish, one could most likely make due with English.

In finland regular poor finnish man makes its own alcoholic drink called "kilju" or booze called "pontikka" and drinks these at home byself wearing just underwear. We call this "Kalsarikänni". Its free and fun.
Kalsarikänni is "trouser drunk" in translation, and to "trouser drunk" you don't need "kilju" which is sugar fermented with yeast ("sugar wine" in england), or "pontikka" which is a very strong distilled beverage, made usually from "kilju". Just a 24 pack of beer, or a bottle of vodka will do.
Of course anything will do. Its just about economic situation,like boris said beer is expensive in finland. Have a nice drinking day!

@Vero Agreed, from my last year's experience: Moscow's people are unfriendly and bitter assholes who seem to want to ruin everyone's days. My dad was asking for the way, he got an annoyed "I don't know" (more like in the way of "fuck off"), asked another guy few minutes later and he pulled out his phone in the moment he was talked to and ignored my dad. although, the city is great and they have great restaurants, and oooh boy the VDNKH is worth to look at as well! If you have an idea of where to go it's definitely a trip worth for a week.
