You are doing great! Don't worry about what others think. You are ahead of 90% of sailors who would love doing your adventure.
Love your attitude of moving forward regardless of the difficulties.

I congratulate you for sailing all the way 10 miles up the Cape Fear, then through Snow's Cut, where the current will reverse! You fought current at some point, it is inevitable on the River. I time my transits around the tide there. Falling tide on a southerly wind is BRUTAL.

Carolina Beach . Go on vacation, leave on probation. CB is defiantly a hot spot. Lived there myself for many years. I do have some fond memories, and it was cool to see my old haunt on your channel. Thanks for sharing

10+ years back a guy on catamaran Impi got tired of changing the impellor on his water cooled generator. He replaced with a 12v magnetic drive water pump and eliminated the impellor issue. I wonder how a variable speed magnetic drive water pump might work on a sailboat propulsion engine? Needs to be variable speed since adequate volume of water varies depending on engine speed. These pumps seem to be inexpensive online and don't have shaft seal leakage issues since there is no shaft.

I thought of putting a bilge pump on the hose by passing the impeller! Id think it would work in a pinch..

So if the canal closes on Oct 15th and today is the 27th, then I’d assume you might already be hauled out.
I had this one time when my engine broke down. Had just left the anchorage and was in the middle of a shipping channel going into LI sound. All of a sudden engine quit on me. Powerboats and ferries going past me. I had my departure times perfectly with the tide going out. This also meant I was not able to go back in to anchor.
I raised the sail, watching them flog in almost no wind. Eventually the tide pushed me out far enough for me to catch the breeze in the sound. I spend a wonderful day sailing in just about perfect conditions. Hand steering of course. Who needs an autopilot anyway. Some 8 hours or so later I made it back to my home port. No wind. I let the rest of the tide drift me into the bay until it would push me no further. Then I jumped into the dinghy, tied it to the bow and for the next hour rowed my 30’ Hunter back to its mooring. Yes no outboard.
With blisters on my hands, I took a quick dip in the anchorage to freshen up and went to Louis Restaurant for some well deserved cold beverages and dinner.
    Good times.

In one shot you said you checked the impeller and it was good. Then all of the sudden you showed a chewed up impeller. Carolina beach is a nice place, also check out writesville beach. What happened to the haircut, cut it short so you stop playing with it😅

Bigger doesn't always mean more capable in terms of bluewater. I'd take a Flicka 20 over a hunter 30 every day of the week. ( no hate on hunters, they're good for what they're designed for)

    • @sailingEV888

Displacement doubles afterr 36ft. A vessel 2 ft longer than a 36 seems twice the size!! Just my 2 cents. Any vessel under 30 ft would be to small for any serious sailing.. just my opinion...

    • @PyeGuySailing
      @PyeGuySailing 3 місяці тому

@@sailingEV888 are you wanting a more comfortable boat? I thought you meant capable as in how it handles bad seas. Everyone has preferences, and you're entitled to them but I don't know anyone who would say a Flicka 20 is too small for "serious sailing ". As for other vessels under 30 ft...have you heard of Ming Ming? Or perhaps Sven Yrvind? Many boats smaller than 30ft cruise around the world..our own iconic Contessa 26 ( built in Toronto) is an incredible blue water boat. Most of the Westerly boats under 30ft are great cruising boats...I could go on. But you get my gist. No hate, but I respectful disagree

Larry and Lin built the two boats they used for two circumnavigations; both were under 30 feet and were designed by Lyle Hess."

Huh, best anchorage??? I give this spot maybe a 2 or 3 out of 10. Boat traffic in the summer, family reunions and parties from peoples homes you can see is not what I want. Maybe you wanted to say the best weather day.

As a Canadain who has anchored from NYC all the way down to Miami covering most of the major anchorages Carolina Beach was one of my top 5. Best one in NC in my opinion. Bit crowed but lots to see and visit. Beach near by privisioning near by auto parts places and a cool touristy town to visit. Just my opinion. Whats your favorite?
