This is just horrible; to the people affected by this hurricane, I'm sorry that you have to go through this; remember, FEMA is ready, along with the Red Cross and National Guard; Donald Trump is NOT there to help you, he just wants to use your grief to further his own agenda.

In earthquake zones, buildings are built to withstand earthquakes. When the zonal Standards are followed, buildings survive earthquakes. Why aren't buildings in tornado and hurricane zones built to survive the winds and rains? Why isn't the local infrastructure built to deal with the amounts of water dumped in these events? Storm drains in LA are the size of rivers!!!

A couple of things: buildings can be made to survive certain conditions up to a point. "Earthquake proof" buildings are generally designed to survive up to a 7.0, but one of those buildings directly on the epicenter of a 5.0 probably would not survive. Same thing with storm drains. They can be designed to handle 300% of normal runoff from rain, but once the ocean surges in and the river is running backwards, the physics change. Buildings can be designed (and most new buildings in Florida ARE designed) to withstand "normal" hurricane force winds up to about 120 mph. But the wind speed in a tornado spun off from that hurricane can reach speeds up to 300 mph. There is no way to design a building to withstand that with any certainty. I've seen solid concrete buildings flattened by an F3.
It's almost a dead certainty that insurance isn't going to cover the damage as a full replacement but as a partial repair.

Nobody lied. The storm surge came further down the coast, missing the bay, if the storm had tracked slightly further north, things could have been much, much worse.
