It´s not that bad. Sure, modern games are without a question more comfortable to use. But remember, Dune 2 had even more clunkier controls. It´s recommended to learn the hotkeys(which is also often needed in modern games) for attack, build and so on. There is also a program called Warcraft Mousehelper to help with clicks and dragging (however, I decided that I rather use the original controls).
