It’s great bringing these sets to our attention. This is a time in history when this country united together to defeat a true world threat. America was not perfect but it was a far sight better in many ways than it is today. Would we unite in the same way today? This music was so important because it brought relief to those dedicated to defeating the arch enemy.
This series was produced and recorded under the supervision of Glenn Gray of Glenn Gray and The Casa Loma Orchestra in the late 60s and early 70s. They were all new recordings done by many of the original band members and the best hollywood side men Gray could get. Time-Life spared no expense in the production and the sound is magnificent. Two LPs in each box with a comprehensive booklet of the history of each band and music on each record. The booklet also included information on the makeup of each session members and date of each recording. The track arrangement is entirely different from the CD and cassette 80s re-issues. The series was originally issued only on vinyl. We had these at home in the 70s. I learned to love big band music from these. If you want to hear Big Band the way it sounded Live, get these if you can. UncategorizedStationeryInvitesBrowse ...
awesome vid! i just got into collecting vinyl and vintage stereo equipment again. i picked up a bunch of these swing record sets and big band record sets with 3 to 10 albums in each set for $.50 each. beautiful box sets with liner notes and booklets. love the great deals you can find at thrift stores!
My Dad was a HUGE record collector and we still have his massive collection. He kept things pristine and there is a record shelf filled with all of those you showed...PLUS. A few closets were converted into record storage. He was a Big Band, Swing, Jazz, and Dixieland Jazz fan. I learned a lot from him :)
ha!, i've been selling the heck out of those vinyl sets for an estate i work for (they had multiples of many records) the swing sets are not the music from the original artists, they're modern recreations (for the time) however, they're still sought after because they're faithful recreations and in stereo, which the original recordings are not. by the way, yours are 2nd press.
Hi Mr Mayo, I got the Nat King Cole, Swing Era 1940-41 (my slipcover is Black) and Sentimental Journey 80 hits of the 40's. I have some Abbott and Costello box sets of their radio shows and routines. Hard to believe no one wanted those swing box sets???? great video :-)
That is a real nice collection. I have seen them at thrift stores. I have another really nice Time-Life collection of big band music about 19 box sets with informative information about the recordings. They have all been process at half speed mastering and are in mint condition so the sounds really jumps out right at you. Big band music was the rock and roll of its time, loud music played at big dance hall. I have a huge bag band collection on vinyl. A music that I really got into in the early 2000s when I wanted to take a break from rock and roll. :)
I had friends who played on those sessions. One was the late Skeets Herfurt who played lead alto sax on those.I had records of him going back to the '30s with The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra from the mid-30s,both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey from the mid to late '30s,Alvino Rey from 1939 to 1942 and numerous studio sides he did for Capitol in the fifties and sixties.I'd known him from 1982,when he just retired from Lawrence Welk's band. He''d been with Welk from the late '70s.I also made friendly acquaintanceships with drummer Jack Sperling, alto saxophonist Leis Robinson and trumpeter Johnny Best who was on quite a number of those recreations until about 1970.I met him at a concert in Springfield,Oregon in 1978.I kept in touch with him until about 1995.He would tell me about his days with Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller.Skeets Herfurt did the same regarding his days with both Dorseys.I still have a few of those volumes in my I collection.Jack Sperling was with Les Brown, but I talked to him about his days with trumpeter Bunny Berigan in late 1941 and early '42.I first spoke to him in 1988.
Hey Joe, after me and my wife split, she moved into a building in Alexandria VA right next door to the Time-Life Headquarters building where most of this kind of product was sent from. It would have been a fantastic place to dumpster dive, but I never did. Enjoy those (I think you will) and give them a good home. The Nat set is cool as well. Take care...
Very nice collection Joe! I'll bet someone paid a decent price for those when they were new. I also like your "Collect today" motto. It's similar to a motto I like to live by, which is "It's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission". My wife, of course, doesn't agree. LOL
When Time Life reissued the complete set, back in 1982/3 I IIRC - paid for by monthly subscription - I signed on for the complete course. I've never regretted spending the money, and I still have them. Played less nowadays, but with a much expanded library that is to be expected. I won't be disposing them any time soon.
I love collect now, worry where to put it later. Excellent motto Joe,(only worry when you're living like a 90 year old cat lady with nothing but cats, cat food, cat litter, cat toys and cat houses except it's just music music music movies movies movies posters posters posters memorabilia memorabilia memorabilia). You'll be happy.
I mistakenly left a comment on Melinda Murphy’s channel that was supposed to be attached to the message I left you today. You need to see the 1993 movie Swing Kids, it’s directly related to these albums and what this music meant to kids overseas. Thanks!
These were recorded as originally scored by the original composers, and played by the best musicians of the day in state of the art studios. It’s the closest thing you can get to being in the ballroom live with the original bands. What a great find!
Free is the best price ever - Bazookey Geddy sure let you have a bonus there. I always thought of swing - big band music as the precursor to rock & roll. There should be some good listenin' in there.
Hey Joe, I love these ‘swing era’ collection box sets. My aunt from California sent me a few back here to the UK and I love listening to them. Good stuff, keep spinning
Love these videos. Your enthusiasm is infectious. That was a nice selection of stuff you picked up. I Bet your place is a treasure trove of all kinds of music. My dad was a big fan of all this swing music and i inherited his collection when he died. I still enjoy listening to it. Great music never dates.
Those Swing era boxes are really nice. Saw then a while aga at a thrift store here in the Netherlands. Must have been the complete series. They were €3 each. Unfortunatly there were no books anymore so I left them. Still sad about it. Great finds, Joe!
Hi Joe, after The Beatles, this kind of music is an absolute favourite of mine. Swing and dance bands from the 30s and 40s. And this is a great collection. There are 15 box sets in all, and although they are not the original recordings they are played almost note for note as the originals and in such hi fidelity and great quality stereo sound I think they are superb. It’s a great collection from the early 70s I believe.
Did you get all 15 Joe? If you didn’t and wish to collect the rest at some point here is some information....www.bsnpubs.com/warner/time-life/04swing/04swing.html
still recovering from those RD imitations last night....swing music very cool.....love to watch people dance to that and there are some cool videos on youtube with that. One of my favorite Everybody Loves Raymond episodes was when Robert and Debra started going out doing swing dancing. Thought they were both great and Ray was hilarious! Crank that swing music up for the neighbor! XO
Love the video, thank you! Have you ever done a "Connie Francis "video of your collections? If, not I would love for you to do one. I love Nat King Cole, nice set. I have a few of those book sets, love them.
There’s a guy selling the complete set Swing Era unopened for about 200 dollars. Are they worth it and how’s the audio pressing quality. Have not seen em around but what’s your honest opinion worth the buy
Time Life did a reissue in 1982/3. That's what I have and they apparently are new pressings from the original dies (is that the correct term?). Anyway, to answer your question on quality - they are 1st class recordings. 40 years on they still sound as good, with just the inevitable click from where the tone arm got accidentaly jiggled and went flying across the record surface. Ignore those and I have 15 lots of 90+ minutes of sheer musical pleasure. If that offer is still going and you like the music of the Big Bands - grab it.

Those box sets look good surveys of what America was listening to during the Great Depression and World War II.
Found 4 box like that this week , and was a good surprise , thoses record enjoyed my last mornings.
So cool Joe . And you know free is good :))) !!!!!

Just found this record on the ground in abandon house
Everyone likes free records. Imagine how many we’d have if they were *all* free!
2003Cpayne - Yeah, but I wouldn't take just any records for free if I didn't have some interest in them. Ain't takin' no free Rap Rekkids - Word Up!
My uncle recently passed and left me his massive LP collection including time life series. Can I donate to a library?
Sure
I just found a few today for a few bucks per box. Seems like a waste to be thrown out.
Well, they were a waste of space in my house.
Joe as we discussed at the Fest. The benefit of CD’s is you are Able to play them and enjoy them in the car.
Elvis had in-dash turntables in his Caddys.
Those Time Life sets are great - I have one or two - and you can usually find them super cheap. Almost any time life set is worth getting.
Goodwill had those and was charging per record, so those sets would be un-a-ffordable.
Hey Joe, I love these ‘swing era’ collection box sets. My aunt from California sent me a few back here to the UK and I love listening to them. Good stuff, keep spinning
