In my opinion Ed Is one of the best ambassadors for the bass profession! He's well spoken, intelligent, well rounded and I value his opinion on gear and equipment. WellDone!
Big thanks to Ed for doing the video and to Scott for putting it together. Ed's sounding awesome and his rig sounded IMENSE at the show that night! Cheers Geoff :-)
Great guy, player and teacher! I've learned so much from reading his columns in Bassplayer alone, since I was a teenager! I've kept all the copies (from the first issue ('89/'90?). Later off course I watched all his Bass Whisperer video's on UA-cam too.
If I'm ever feeling down in life, I watch Ed Friedland's review of the MXR El Grande bass pedal from almost a decade ago on UA-cam. It's super cheesy, but he uses some editing effects midway through the video that always make me chuckle. When I first got to college, older adults would ask what I wanted to do with a jazz performance degree (I subsequently changed degrees). I'd always respond with "I want to be Ed Friedland when I grow up," and that's still true today.
I've been playing Greenboy cabs for 6 years now. And, I'll never, EVER play thru ANYTHING else. My single Greenboy cab can blow the very biggest of bass/guitar rigs completely outta the water. And, the tone is to die for.
You talked about whether electric would have been appropriate for the gig, but you didn't really cover an electric upright. Seems like something like an NS or a Clevinger or whatnot would be easier to travel with, and might also eliminate feedback worries with the high volume levels you mentioned. Was it a tone preference or a playability preference that caused you to stick with the acoustic?
I just saw the Mavericks show last night. Ed is right. The sound was absolutely huge. Perhaps just a bit too muddy but I'm guessing that was an issue with the house.
+Scott's Bass Lessons I once saw a bass fall out of the open side door of a van leaving the venue. Guy just got out of the van, put it back in, shut the door and screamed "WHY WAS THE SIDE DOOR EVEN OPEN?!" to no one in particular then drove off. Quite restrained I thought.
OK new to all this. Guitarist here.. tell me all I need to know..how much does one cost, where can I get a decent one, what is a good brand and price, how to amplify it for gigs, everything I need to know thanks..
I thought about it so now I did it, streamed the bass clip in a pitch software. It turns out it's about 15 to 40% off pitch. I wondered about the fretless playing. Sounds ok but if it was a vocals it wouldn't fly without editing. Great guy and great portable bass, never know it existed. Make a rundown on the U-bass, it interests me a lot with the short neck. Must have crazy fat strings.

according to the website chadwick folding basses are not made anymore. how come??
What make is that blonde double bass? They never actually said at the beginning. I assume it’s a removable neck plywood bass but what kind?
Is it a Shen?
Shit ok it’s a Chadwick.
Anyone know if he is playing the hybrid model (with the carved top) in this video or the standard model?
Is that a 3/4 or 4/4 size bass??
It's a trip to watch a video featuring a Chadwick with my feet propped on my Chadwick case...
Gear runover would be depressing and somewhat hilarious at the same time. Happy weekend :D
+apinakapinastorba Lol... once a truck ran over Geoff's fretless - that was a long story, lol!

Nice to hear Ed but you never answered the obvious question which plagues so many.....how does he limit feedback when playing at volume?
