Question: If you got down to the point where atmospheric pressure was greater than you body's density, wouldn't you then start to float upward until atmospheric pressure balanced with your body density?
After all, you would tend to float on a bed of Earth's molten lava because the lava is denser than the material of your body...That's assuming that your body hadn't already spontaneously combusted from the heat (& turned you into a charcoal briquette) *before* you even touched the surface. Sure, if you fell into the lava, just your sheer inertia might cause you to sink at first, but once your momentum is spent, you'd float back up again. Of course, you'd never know it by that point...It would be up to outside observers to see it happen.

I think be because the atmosphere is composed of gas you'd still fall. Bc your body is more dense than gas. The atmospheric pressure come from the vast of amount of material above and around you. So I think you'd still "sink" but then get crushed in the gas.

    • @MidnightDStroyer
      @MidnightDStroyer Рік тому +20

@@manlystan100 I take it that you've never heard how tornadoes & hurricanes can pick people & even cars) up to carry them around for miles, until ejecting them for dozens of yards or more. Or perhaps you've never seen a skydiver's practice in a wind generator that keeps them in a perpetual state of freefall.
This happens because great amounts of air pressure indeed has an effect on a person's surface area. Just like in the skydiver's example though, it would always feel like you're falling even though you are objectively maintaining a fairly steady distance form the ground itself.
Of course, you'd be dead long before your body reached that point of being held aloft due to air pressure alone, because of the overall average of atmospheric pressure surrounding you on all sides would still collapse your lungs (at the very least)...That's how the atmosphere itself becomes more dense than your body, through sheer atmospheric pressure & gravity.

I was surprised to read recently that Uranus has a rocky core. While its atmosphere appears to be pretty static, would I ever love to be seeing it from a few thousand miles away. Neptune is said to have 1,000+ mph winds and "raining diamonds", made from soot made by lightning strikes that falls to a depth and therefore pressure sufficient to equal eons of being crushed by the weight of 100 miles of ground---the minimum to create a diamond on Earth. Love to hear the cracking sound of diamonds blown at supersonic speeds, but of course "sonic" depends on density of the medium.

    A Brief Encounter with Uranus
In this chapter, we'll explore what would happen if a human were to spend a mere 5 seconds on the enigmatic and frigid planet, Uranus. Now, before we dive into this hypothetical scenario, it's crucial to understand that Uranus is not a place where humans can survive even for a short period. It's a gas giant with an atmosphere comprised primarily of hydrogen, helium, and traces of methane. The conditions there are incredibly hostile, making it inhospitable for human life. But, for the sake of curiosity, let's imagine what might occur during this brief visit.
    Entry into the Unknown
As you approach Uranus, you'd be traveling in a spacecraft specially designed for this mission. Your vessel would need to withstand the extreme pressures and temperatures, not to mention the lack of solid ground to land on. Upon entering Uranus' atmosphere, you'd immediately notice the striking blue-green hue caused by the presence of methane.
    The Descent
The spacecraft would descend deeper into the atmosphere, and within seconds, you'd feel the immense pressure building up around you. Uranus' atmosphere is thick, and it gets denser as you go deeper. At this point, the pressure would be crushing-similar to what you'd experience at the bottom of Earth's oceans, but much more intense.
    Chilling Temperatures
Uranus is an icy planet, and as you descend further, the temperatures would plummet. We're talking about temperatures that can drop down to around -224 degrees Celsius (-371 degrees Fahrenheit). In just a few seconds, any exposed surfaces of your spacecraft would freeze solid.
    Suffocating Atmosphere
The composition of Uranus' atmosphere is another problem. It's primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, with traces of methane. There's virtually no oxygen to breathe. Within seconds, the spacecraft's life support systems would be overwhelmed, and you'd lose the ability to breathe.
    Fierce Winds
Uranus is known for its violent and fast-moving winds. These winds can reach speeds of up to 560 miles per hour (900 kilometers per hour). In just 5 seconds, you'd experience some turbulent turbulence, to say the least.
    The Escape
As you approach the end of your 5-second visit, your spacecraft would need to ascend quickly to escape Uranus' inhospitable conditions. The rapid ascent would subject you to even more extreme forces, but it's the only way to have any chance of survival.
    Conclusion
In reality, spending even a fraction of a second on Uranus would be impossible without advanced technology designed to withstand the planet's hostile environment. Humans are not equipped to survive there naturally, and it's a destination reserved for robotic missions, not human exploration. So, while it's fascinating to imagine what might happen during a brief visit, the reality is that Uranus will remain a distant and mysterious world beyond our reach for the foreseeable future.

"It's just a swirling ball of gas compressed around a small icy core."
The core of Uranus is not colder than the layers around it. In fact, the core of Uranus is much hotter than its surrounding layers. Uranus has a complex internal structure divided into several layers. These include:
    - Core: Composed mostly of rock and ice, the core of Uranus is extremely hot, with temperatures estimated to be around 5,000 to 9,000 Kelvin (K), or ~4,700°C to ~5,700°C.
    - Mantle: Surrounding the core is a mantle made up of water, ammonia, and methane ices. The temperature in this layer is cooler than the core but still very high, ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 K, or ~1,700°C to ~4,700°C.
    - Atmosphere: The outermost layer is the atmosphere, primarily composed of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The temperature in the upper atmosphere is significantly lower, with values around 53 K (-220°C) at the cloud tops.
The high temperature of the core is due to the immense pressure and the residual heat from the planet's formation. The surrounding layers, particularly the atmosphere, are much cooler by comparison.
