I'm the king of taking a $200 guitar. Putting $137 into it. Only to end up with a $199 guitar.
Nice to meet you. I’m the king of buying a $100 guitar. Buying $300 worth of parts and putting them all in a box in the closet, never to be seen again. 😂😂😂
Its not how much you put into it that makes the difference, its HOW you choose to put that money in that counts. Half of my collection are affordable guitars that have been modded. But they've been modified into something unique! You can spend thousands on a guitar that is not unique and special. You can also spend 400 bucks, and a little imagination, to create a one of a kind showstopper. My friends, with much more expensive collections than mine, are just as intrigued and envious of my guitars as i am of theirs. One of my closest friends has a ridiculous collection of high end beauties and he always says that my guitars are so clean and so well set up that it makes him embarrassed of his own! Were talking PRS, Parker, Gibson, Fender, Nash, even a completely hand made Rowan, and hes envious of MY one off creations.
@@stevenpipes1555 I totally get that! I have one expensive guitar i have done nothing to and i never play it. My 'cheap' guitars, i have modded, polished and fiddled, refretted and rewired and most of all: played the hell out of them! But i take care of them and they feel great to play....the high end guitar is up for sale....😁🎸🤘🏼🎸
Nothing wrong with plywood body guitars as long as the neck is stable and straight!
My first electric was a Lyle Les Paul copy with a plywood body. The arch top was achieved by putting a specifically shaped block under the top 2 layers of veneer. Bolt on neck. The neck was actually pretty good but that body wasn't suitable for repurposing. Fast forward several years, my BC Rich ASM is Chinese made with an actual mahogany body and a flamed maple veneer. I'd gladly upgrade the electronics and hardware because neck is fantastic and the body looks great. Way cheaper than the American made ASM (won't have neck thru tho)

Yeah.... good setup and good electronics go a long way.
I love this hobby! For example, I found a black Squire Affinity at a flea market. It was like brand new for 50 bucks. It had a completely flamed neck with an extremely thick and dark rose board and stripe. I snagged it! I carved away the paint in such a way as to create gloss black hot rod flames over bare wood. I did a full level crown and polish on the frets. I upgraded the saddles, the nut, the string retainers and the strap buttons to Graphtech Tusq versions. A reproduction 53 Tele pickup in the neck position and repro Texas Specials in middle and bridge positions. I wired it like a Tele, on a three way switch controlling neck and bridge, with a dedicated volume for the middle pickup to swell on or off with. Then a master volume and tone for the whole guitar. Mojotone pots and wire, with a Dunlop switch. I added a brass block to the bridge and topped the whole thing off with some open gear locking Hipshots!
The whole project cost me less than 400$ and now i have one of the most unique Strats ive ever seen. It looks plays and sounds like a boutique HOT ROD! As for the resale value, who knows, i cant imagine ever selling it. But i can say ive been offered far far more than its actual value, by people who know guitars very well, more than once.
Phil, Epiphone has rolled out dozens of $1500 (over $2000 in Canada) in the past few months alone. The expensive guitars are already SOOOOO expensive. Even the moderately priced guitars are expensive. Prices are getting to the point where I will never buy a new guitar again. I’ve taught myself enough to know what to look for when buying used and I think most guitar players should do the same. I feel like I’m ranting so I’m done. 🤣🤣🤣
I buy every cheap squier I can find. (50 bucks or less). I refinish them with awesome colors and do a ton of fret work and change some electronics and flip the guitars for a nice profit.
Y9u are talented. Wished I could do fret work. Would be cool to do custom airbrush type graphics too.
For all intents and purposes, Nash takes “partscasters” and builds/finishes/tweaks them. They are great guitars tbh.
2:28 this unexpected sound made me laugh
Hi Phil. Saw this on the livestream and then later in the day watched a video where Shane from In The Blues goes through his guitar collection. He has two guitars from Maybury a UK based guitar company that uses repurposed materials, including in one of the guitars an old Squire neck.
My friend is having their '60's Mosrite twelve string restored like new. It had to have a new pick guard though as the original one is too far gone
Some of the 70’s Ash bodies from Japan were really nice.. I watch for them on facebook marketplace
There was a guy in East Mesa that was removing Squire logo and sanding back of neck, then putting water slide Fender logo and re-finish. He said he was shipping overseas. Bull!
You can put a Porsche engine in a VW beetle, but you need beefed up suspension. The concept easily translates to electric guitars.
Lol
Or take a $64 yard sale Ibanez strat and put all new PU's a Sophia trem and locking tuners new pots and wiring. Fun, but I didn't even do the work myself like Phil could, so my investment is like $1600 with labor, NO one is going to pay me $1600 for it, but on the other hand, No body has a strat like this one, and I couldn't buy one like it for that price. At the $2500 -$3000 range there are builders that would make one like it, AKA a super strat custom,…..saw one on Guitar Max the other day, or Phil and his Keisel 😃
I would love to be able to take crappy guitars and turn them into decent ones... fret work, good bridge, and pickups and electronics.....
Trees are still growing …
I bought a chibson sg from a garage sale for 30$ but the neck was perfect aside from a few cosmetic defects i refaced and did custome paint job and added a floyd rose frx top mount tremolo snd a set of emg 81/85 set with preamp boost switch installed and 500k pots... upgraded tuners to grover 106b locking tuners.. it now plays better than my actual gibson sg FFS lol im stunned to say the least and i even removed gibson logo from headstock and replaced had a picture of kim jong uns face put on it as a joke with the words supreme signature edition written in marker makeing fun of the guitar as a chibson... guy at my local music store offered 500$ for it to put in his store window for shits and giggles... but i declined offer as it plays really well.. most chibsons are pure dog water but some are not bad in terms of play just shit hardware and amateur quality paint job...

The next trick is to get the people who are totally willing to pay top dollar for new guitars that look beat to hell, to instead just buy old guitars that are actually beat to hell. Way better profit margin after the initial investment in marketing.
I always look at more affordable guitars from the standpoint of will they become the new "hotness" later in time. Like how Squires made in Japan and other brands have now become. Costing many more times their original value. It's hard to predict what the future will hold for any piece of gear 10-20 years later. I usually hold on to a guitar for a while to see if it becomes "desirable" or not. Once you change it (finish, shape, function) it will never be "original". I only mod things that can be reversed and put back to factory, and I keep the parts to do so. But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
It's not necessarily that they gained much value but that they held their value against inflation better than others, I picked up a mij squier jazz bass for $400 about a year ago, that's not exactly an investment
If a guitar has alot of hype surrounding it the chances are good that people who missed the boat will pay a little more later to see what the fuss was all about. I have a Schecter made in Korea. Its ridiculously good. And is the highest version of that model i believe. I paid 250 dollars at a yardsale but it was about 1300 new. Im hoping that the recognition of how good Schecter's have been, and how good the quality of guitars from that factory have been, will result in something similar to the Japanese guitar craze. Also i have a PRS SE from the new dedicated factory in Indonesia. I believe its one of the earliest examples from the new factory so im hoping those will appreciate as well. But who knows. I love them both and wont sell either one anyway. But its fun to speculate.
@stevenpipes1555 yes definitely I would keep them. Korea was a great country for building great guitars and they are now looked at like the guitars from Japan still are. Even China and Indonesia are making great guitars and my Schecter is one of them. Their attention to detail and build quality are good.
@@mikewithers299 which Schecter do you have? If you don't mind me asking.
I‘ve been doing this for years
I'm all about this and have been doing it. Some amazing Asian Fender necks out there that punch way above their weight. Cost more? What are you taking about? You seem confused. You buy a pawn shop guitar with a killer neck for $100 and toss the rest. So costly!
People have been modding guitars for years.
As long as relic guitars are a big deal, repurposing won't be as popular. Factory relic guitars are gross and a waste of money. Unless they are from playing and time.
Repurpose.
I've been redoing Squiers and such for years, they sell pretty well and always play better that original. Not too bad of a profit margin either.
I do the same
I currently have a Squier and I am interested in upgrading it. What are the usual components used for upgrading a Squier?
@@marcd1981 cts pots maybe a push pull pot to do something out of phase. New CRL 5 way, nicer pickups, nicer locking tuners, bone nut.. lots of different ways. Fret work is a must. Level, crown and polish.
