    It is significant that Bill Murray's character is the only one that realises (or perceives) that the same day is repeating. So what do the other characters do on the subsequent iterations of the day after they encounter him? Each time his reaction to these people is increasingly frustrated or angry. Do none of these other characters speak to each other and say "Well, that was rude of him, why did he do that?"

  • @larrylaffer3246
    @larrylaffer3246 3 роки тому +53

    Simple. Bill Murray's character is forced to relieve each day because he didn't appreciate the smaller things in life. He only beats the loop once he grows as a person and learns to appreciate what he has and help his fellow man. How it occurs, well my headcanon is that Puxatawni Phil is a guardian angel of sorts. He holds Murray's Character ala It's a Wonderful Life until the job is done, only the positive consequences stay at the end.

    • @larrylaffer3246
      @larrylaffer3246 3 роки тому +2

      @James Kraatz Yeah. I mean this film is kinda of a reimagining of It's a Wonderful Life of sorts. Murray's character has to learn to appreciate life itself and once he does learn to make the most of it and not squander his gift and share it with the world only then does the cycle break. It only takes a few selfless acts to make a difference in people's lives.

    My explanation for why the loop is thus:
    Because the writers said so
    The Loop is a representation of the monotony of a closed-off life, and the hopelessness, helplessness, demoralization, and detachment that comes with it. Only by actually paying attention, engaging, and going out of his way to improve everything around him does it change.
    Not when he kills himself, not when he does edgy, NoN-cOnFoRmAtIvE things; when he sees, savors, and improves the things around him, as well as himself.
    Stop to smell the flowers you pass by every day. Draw those blinds you always have closed. The Loop is a mindset, and so is being free of it.

    there is this one scene that kind of niggles at me. It's that final day before the bachelor auction where Phil is playing the piano in the band and the piano teacher is there, and she specifically says that Phil is her student...
    Since the day resets, it would suggest he must have gone to get another lesson and I would surmise that at this stage he's become proficient enough that he wouldn't have had to, especially given that day he was doing countless 'errands' throughout town that made him the town darling.
    Actually it doesn't overly bother me, but maybe she could have explained it more because I'm left with the notion that on the final day when he manages to make pretty much everyone in town love him, he still let a young girl get booted out of a piano lesson so he could get a lesson.

    • @richmcgee434
      @richmcgee434 3 роки тому +1

      If it makes you feel better, assume there's an unseen scene where Phil encounters the piano teacher, "reminds" her of how she gave him a lesson or two when he was younger and he wanted to show her how he'd improved, then sits in and helps with the lesson for the girl he originally got booted to make up for it. Kid gets her lesson, teacher thinks she really got Phil started (even if her memory is hazy about it) so she's happy to claim she taught him later, everyone wins. He's got time somewhere in his crazy schedule to spend half an hour that way.

    In every movie with Bill Murray, it feels like he's the same character in different wacky scenarios. I guess you could say that for any actor, but it feels prominent with him for some odd reason. And I love it. I haven't seen all of his movies, but he (usually) gives me the vibe his character already read the script for the movie and is just going through the motions of the plot in the most hilarious way possible. Think of Ghostbusters, Stripes, and uh, maybe Caddyshack... It's been a while since I saw that one...
    But in groundhog day, this is the first time I've seen the Bill Murray "Character" in a state of misery and uncertainty. I just think it's interesting.

    it should be noted that Live Die Repeat is not an original movie, it's plot is lifted directly from a manga with the exact same time loop premise called "All you need is Kill" about a rookie soldier fighting a hopeless war against a really abstract alien force and through the process of dieing repeatedly, gains the skills to become the second greatest soldier in the world with the help of the first in a story thats largely about the dehumanizing effect we have when we stop viewing life and death as blip on our radar, theres a version out there illustrated by the dude who made Death Note, if you can stomach painful looking deaths, you'll get a kick out of Ground Hog day: Saving Private Ryan edition.

    I like how the canon sequel to Groundhog Day is a vr game starring his son which could mean it’s some weird genetic thing

    I love time loops. You get so much character development out of it. Some of the best time loops has been in Star Trek.
    There’s also this YA book called Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. It’s a time loop. It’s amazing.

    I also enjoyed rage ninteen’s animation bits. Keep up the great work everyone.

    The 80s and 90s uncensored podcast recently made an episode talking about Groundhog Day's 30th birthday. It's a great cult classic movie. I have seen it several times, it's definitely a special movie.
    Not giving any explanation may seem unsatisfactory but in this case it doesn't matter because GD asks so many interesting questions that give more than enough depth to the movie. Time traveller movies can be boring because it is almost always the same: Someone goes back in time, tries to stop a specific thing from happening but it doesn't work out.
    Donnie Darko also comes to mind. You can kinda understand what's happening but there's so much mystery and symbolism, it's honestly hard to really get the movie...because supernatural things are happening that human's cannot fully grasp.
    For me, another cult classic the problem you're talking about. What GD does very well is to start the story at the beginning. We follow Phil along on his journey. We are not smarter than he is. We know as much as he knows. What "the Truman Show" does not well is that the movie starts at the moment when Truman is starting to get suspicious. I'd liked it better (not a huge fan of the movie, I used to like it, now it feels like a superficial movie with a great idea that could have made for a much better movie) when we had gotten a bit more background info how things developed rather than watching Jim Carrey constantly getting suspicious and repeatedly getting into weird situations with the actors surrounding him. That got repetitiv and honestly annoying really quickly and the fact that a) nobody told Truman the truth, b) no actor did that, c) the audience totally went along to keep a person in bondage on a public tv show, d) the creator justifying what he did was just too much suspension of disbelief for me to do. Also there is only one real human being while the actors are just caricaturs always acting the same which gets annoying quickly.

    Left this in another thread, but I'll repost my theory here in case it gets lost.
    What if _we_ the viewer caused the time loop in Groundhog Day? It's as if we were playing a video game restarting over and over again just to get the girl we like only then to find out that we needed to be good friends with everyone else and invest in ourselves before we finally resume time.
    This is truly a Cyberpunk commentary much like Tokimeki Memorial. Do you know anyone who would've gotten the famous idol Rita the first time without guides? No, only a certain sick individual who viewed "love" as a video game and was able to write the story crafting "Rita" the character could ever do such a thing, robbing us and Rita of our humanity.

    Timeloops are timetravel.
    It's someone travelling back in time at the same point in time, replacing their younger self.
    I mean, there is an aspect that betrays timetravel, which is the lack of aging. But maybe that just means his conscience is timetravelling from his older body into his younger at the end of the day.
    Anyway, I dont know why people want to disprove that loops are timetravelling.
