The best Rat is always a brand new RAT 2. There's no reason not to go with the original. Right now, I've got a Mosky King Rat. It's a little buzzy, but it has some great sounds. I'd skip some of the variety for the slightly clearer sound of the OG.
The Rat is a stay on my board, but I am only using one setting, to only change the voice of my amp (not add distortion): gain at minimum as much as it kicks in (8 o'clock-ish), filter to taste (about 2 o'clock) and volume to net unity gain. I feel this setting slims down the tone of a flat response amp (Bassman, JTM) to emulate a later Marshall.
Very interesting! I will likely never own a shonoble pedal, but his pedal sounds very good to me. I can see how the regular rat would cut in a mix, but you are correct, it lacks the things that the donner has. The Emma is too fizzy. I like the Cranium, however, I cannot, am absolutely unable to, find a setting that I'm happy with that I'm also happy with once I stomp on the boost. I love my T-Rex Mudhoney ll, it's the winner for me. And while mine has sms components, whereas yours has through hole components, I personally prefer the ll over the regular Mudhoney, as I am able to switch on the fly between my 2 favourite settings, one is low gain and the other has the boost on, it's great and that can't be done with the regular Mudhoney.
I'm certain that the Mudhoney II is awesome. We talked with Brian Wampler for the podcast, and he is of the opinion that through holes vs smd has no impact on the tone.
I don't care if it's a staple of pedals, it's just not inspiring to me, nice one Jon. I can't see why you don't like RAT but it's a nice statement. If i were you i'd keep the rat and the emma electronics the reezzzzafizzajeeeza thing and ditch the rest. That red one was a pleasant surprise.
The real rat was the only one i really liked. Some others had a sound or were cool. A Wampler Ratsbane or VFE Alpha Dog are two of the best IMHO. Now as of now I use a cheap Satone S809 Neotama Distortion, it has a fat mode that is massive, can do the rat thing in stock mode, the mosfet thing is a joke on mine. I want to try a Jam Ratler sometime, along with Petty John Rous.
@@TheToneLounge CAUSE ITS THE BEST EVER FUZZ DISTORTION PEDAL And it Justifies its name ,It can be either MUD or HONEY . Try it all knobs at 1 oclock with a clean amp both with oand without the boost pressed

Never heard that Reezafratzitz. What a freaking name. Reminds me of a great Nirvana sound. It had so much more body than the others.
I think it's a reference to Calvin &Hobbes.
Your outlook and attitude about these pedals are amazing! Again, great stuff. I personally liked the Reezefratzitz best.
My philosophy has changed over the years, so I'm trying to practice what I preach. :)
Used to have a reissue and loved it. Got the mooer clone because it was just to heavy and big. Now it's never leaving my board
I heard great things about the Mooer version.

Yeah, that is how Nuno Bettencourt uses his Rat as well.
ReezaFratzits is not a Rat type pedal at all :)
This is a great distortion pedal! Love it :)
Yeah, that's what some say, other say that it aims to be a Rat-ish pedal. I just included it, regardless. :)

@@TheToneLounge I concur, but I also know that if something goes wrong, it's very difficult to replace the fried component on an sms board.

The Rat has been with me for 2 years, and I've never been impressed by it, no matter what I try.
Greetings from Kalamazoo Mi, I would pick the Rat. then stack it with something. Much like a Muff I always run something with it.
A lot of people love the original circuit. I'm not a huge fan of it, but do enjoy the modded versions of this circuit.

STOOOOOP! IF YOU STILL HAVE THIS TREX OLD LOGO FUZZ DISTORTION ...............KEEP IT NO MATTER WHAT!!!!
@paulvigos1 why is that?

@paulvigos1 I have to get mine working again first. It stopped working a few months ago.
