the blue linkage can be much longer and connected to the eccentric externally then a clevis joint on the other end is then connected to the valve or whatever mechanism. this arrangement was shown to be more efficient in long-lived steam engine applications. presumably because it is using a larger rotating surface to mount to which makes it more stable and incorporates a larger bearing surface
that is, that the blue linkage would surround the outer diam of the eccentric, not being suspended from the side by a pin with seperate bearing to contact a lip internally. simpler, that the bearing is the connecting rod
