Listen to me man. That’s a nice train set and it has sentimental value on top of that. Save yourself a lot LOT of heartache and put a piece of plexiglass or something similar on the edge of the base. Stuff happens, trains derail sometimes for seemingly no reason, even ones that never have before. A plexiglass barrier will be see thru but also prevent your train from falling all the way to the floor when (not if) something happens.
I was in a pizza joint years ago and they had a train around the top of the wall like this. I saw it derail and nearly hit a customer picking up his pizza.
Very Cool, This is exactly what I want to do. I bought all wood last summer, but did not know how it would look. Now that I see yours I want to get started as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing.
I've mentioned this a zillion times now in other comments. I'm using the DCS Remote Commander which does not allow you to change chuff rate, so its stuck with whatever setting from start up.
Union Pacific 4-8-4 Northern & streamliners to go with! Your grandpa has good taste! Very cool addition to your wall! BTW, you can adjust your chuff rate so that your sound and smoke are in sync with wheel rotation. Love to see your grandfathers beautiful train in use & not in boxes! Keep training!!!
I’ve always wanted to build something like this for my grandson who is nuts about trains.I see you used floating shelves instead of brackets which gives the room a cleaner look.
Considering this is your living room...No wife I take it? A truss bridge casting at the doorway will cover the chains and add visual interest. Backdrop art instead of model trees and buildings is the way to go with these setups. Good job.
Dude awesome job. I have 3 HO trains running in my mancave simultaneously. Looks awesome but wanted to give it a background . Glad u mentioned that border company . Once u finalize with the staining of wood or that plexiglass suggestion ( which is smart ) please post another video.
No problem. Its 2 pieces of pine wood screwed together in a L shape and then screwed to the wall with 2 screws every foot and a half or so. Probably overkill but I didn't want to risk it lol. The boards are 1" x 5" and 1" x 3" with the 1x3 vertical that mounts to the wall.
An extrodinary amount of work. Looks amazing! You must be walking about an inch off the floor right now :) MTH is terrific, and the accesories available will keep you in the poorhouse lol. Real awesome looking, congratulations of such an intense project done well.
Nope, no brackets, its 2 pieces of pine wood screwed together in a L shape and then screwed to the wall with 2 screws every foot and a half or so. Probably overkill but I didn't want to risk it lol. The boards are 1" x 5" and 1" x 3" with the 1x3 vertical that mounts to the wall.
David Malott For some reason that is the default chuff rate since you can't change that with the basic DCS system. When I run that locomotive on my full DCS system in the basement I change it to the proper chuff rate.
Just the train itself is probably about $1000, although I didn't pay for it. My grandfather gave me the entire set. The locomotive was about $400-$450 and the cars are about $50 a piece and there are 10 of them(1 not shown).
I read ahead, I see you know about the chuffs being off. Very nice set you got. Did your grandfather pass away? If so, I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you didn't run out and sell it. That's what bugs me more than anything. Thinking that my life's work will just get sold off like it's nothing.
Nope my grandfather is still alive. He sold his house in Tennessee and bought an RV to travel with and found out I started an O Gauge layout and gave me everything he had. The only thing I sold was the track because I couldn't use it, but all of the big stuff I kept and probably always will. I was blown away when he gave it to me and I cherish it.
Hi, great idea, i am looking to do something similar. Can you remember what radius you got away with in the corners, & how wide did you make the shelf. Thanks.
Hello, i would like to know where do you got the wallpaper placed on the wall above the train? Is there any place that they sell them?, because i have a Polar Express and i have it on a ceiling like you have it.
forever Its actually an HO background that was originally in 4 foot by 3 foot sheets. Most of the detail was in the bottom few inches so I just cut off the rest.
+deviltrigger529 Well good for U! mine tolerates my hobbies if they stay in the basement or my large workshop but I wouldn't push it by moving into the living room! cheers!
Nah, I don't want to spend $300 on a simple loop track. I don't need 4 different track inputs or all the extra bells and whistles of the remote. The Remote Commander for $50 works just fine. I do have the DCS system on my main layout though.
When running with the DCS Remote Commander you can't change settings like chuff rate, so that is how it sounds out of the box, theres nothing I can do about that. When this locomotive is on my full DCS system in my basement layout I set it to a more proper chuff rate.
If this is the only video you saw of mine you should check out the finished product video, and also the video of my basement layout. :) Thanks for watching!

Thank you. :) I have another video up on my channel of the final product, with the shelf stained and all.
Looks good I did a similar thing in my medical office. Patients loved it.
Sweet. We see you like the Steelers too. Thanks for sharing.
Dude! Love the hearse model !!!!
Fantastic way of displaying the trains.
Thanks! Dave Sr contributed to this layout and hes the one that got me into this scale in the first place lol.
That loco dosent even come close to having 4 chuffs per revolution😂😂 Cool video
It DOESN'T?
I've mentioned this a zillion times now in other comments. I'm using the DCS Remote Commander which does not allow you to change chuff rate, so its stuck with whatever setting from start up.
its 4 revolutions' per chuff 😅
Now that's tight! You're so awesome to be so creative.

Very nicely done man. I am in the planning stages now but the end product will be pretty darn close to what you have here.
Considering this is your living room...No wife I take it?
A truss bridge casting at the doorway will cover the chains and add visual interest. Backdrop art instead of model trees and buildings is the way to go with these setups. Good job.
That is so damn cool! Hoping to do something similar with my HO trains...
Very cool man! I'm sure your grandpa is very happy with it too.. ;)
Dude awesome job. I have 3 HO trains running in my mancave simultaneously. Looks awesome but wanted to give it a background . Glad u mentioned that border company . Once u finalize with the staining of wood or that plexiglass suggestion ( which is smart ) please post another video.
I do have a finalized video posted, check my channel for it! Thanks for watching!

+deviltrigger529 You bought the boards as 1" x 5" or cut them down from a sheet?
+Bran “BMR” Don Got them at home depot, they are already 1" x 5" in 10 or 12 foot sections.
Really nice job! How did you attach the wood to the wall; didn’t see any bracing?
How is your shelf supported? I think it is a awesome set up.....
Nice.
Man cave house!
Great video and that is creative to have the layout on a shelf but got to say love the Metallica master of puppets poster
Oh to add with that I also love the kill them all album
If you take wire and put it through the chains , it will look like a bridge
theres something wrong with the engine? the chugging isnt synchronized with the pistons. but nice setup, its really cool.
By the way your living room is so cool!
Is the coal car backwards. Seems to me the taller part should be away from the engine.
COOL, not sure about the sound system , what the trigger is,but you should get 4 chuffs per revolution of the drivers
David Malott For some reason that is the default chuff rate since you can't change that with the basic DCS system. When I run that locomotive on my full DCS system in the basement I change it to the proper chuff rate.
What type of shelf mounting is that?
Just the train itself is probably about $1000, although I didn't pay for it. My grandfather gave me the entire set. The locomotive was about $400-$450 and the cars are about $50 a piece and there are 10 of them(1 not shown).
How wide are the boards for the shelf? Do you still have this layout?
I read ahead, I see you know about the chuffs being off. Very nice set you got. Did your grandfather pass away? If so, I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you didn't run out and sell it. That's what bugs me more than anything. Thinking that my life's work will just get sold off like it's nothing.

@@deviltrigger529 that's even better. You sound like your grandfather is as good to you as mine was to me. Damn I miss him.
Nice setup, how did you mount the shelf? I see screws spaced out on the bottom of the board.
I explained in other comments, its 2 pieces of pine wood screwed together in an L shape then mounted to the wall.
Hi, great idea, i am looking to do something similar. Can you remember what radius you got away with in the corners, & how wide did you make the shelf. Thanks.
Use the track as a guide. Some have 31" curves, some 36", some even larger.
Did you use brackets to hold up the track? If so, what type? I would love to build something like that in HO Scale.
Hello, i would like to know where do you got the wallpaper placed on the wall above the train? Is there any place that they sell them?, because i have a Polar Express and i have it on a ceiling like you have it.

hello, thank you I'm interested, where do they sell it?
if that's your living room, you are either single or have the most understanding wife in the world :-). enjoyed the video, thanks
Not single, married with a daughter! =) I do have the most understanding wife in the world lol, she puts up with all my hobbies!
+deviltrigger529 Well good for U! mine tolerates my hobbies if they stay in the basement or my large workshop but I wouldn't push it by moving into the living room! cheers!
+backyardcnc Well my wife is into my hobbies with me so she enjoys seeing it in the living room.
well that's very cool, can you buy her train stuff for her birthday and Christmas? That would be handy!
+backyardcnc I can and I have! Our Polar Express set is hers because she loves that movie.

what's the size of you inside corner track. Getting close to build a wall layout in my office which is 13, x 20'
All curves were O36.
I'm here 9 years late. I wonder how the room looks now
Nice men nice 👍 👌
What is your curve size?
Is that train small
you should do a tour off your house or that room man saw some cool stuff!
Fikung YES GOOD IDEA
Like that water cooled computer and the train is awesome and the scenery and the chains on the bridge 👍👍
No rule that says it can't go back and forth up and down a 2 percent ( or more). grade
get the tiu system its more better n u can do more with the dcs system
How much would a train like this cost?
have u have nice toy car collection did u buy one by one or all collection?
They have been bought 1 by 1 over time. Thanks for the compliment!
deviltrgger529 - ride the lightning
Is there more than one power supply?
1hotGTO Nope, just a single MTH 100 watt PSU.
deviltrigger529 Connected to the track in one connector or repeated at spots around the track?
Robert Clark I think I did a total of 4 connections around the track.
What kind of train is this?
Is the size 1.18?
Yup!
Pan slowly because the camera must refresh. You pans are a total blur
If I was a gambling man I'd bet $10 your not married.
You would lose that $10. This has already been addressed in earlier comments.
You obviously live alone.
You obviously live in your parents basement.
what radius is the track
jordan frye The main corner curves are O36, with a combination of 048 for near the bridge.
thanks
The chuff rate is way off

Aaaah ok, I'm an Mth o gauge collector myself, I have a layout in my garage. And I gotta say that is a fantastic ceiling layout I wish I had one
If this is the only video you saw of mine you should check out the finished product video, and also the video of my basement layout. :) Thanks for watching!
Nice Vid. Still unmarried, huh? ... ;-)
Carsten F Jump to conclusions....huh? ;) I've been with my wife for 12 years. She's into the trains with me.
Carsten F you obviously have not dated fan or hobbies Girls they are extremely HOT. Don't be jelly my friend It never looks good on a gentlemen.
Not child appropriate video.
