ASMR Tracing the Voyages of James Cook around the World (soft spoken, map tracing)

  • Hey everyone! Let's go on another historic journey around the world, this time with James Cook. In the late 18th century, he set off into uncharted territories not once, but three times. What makes his voyages so fascinating is the wealth of information that has survived to this day. Not only did Cook create detailed maps of coastlines and currents, but his expeditions also brought back news of the people they met on the way, including detailed sketches and diaries, often created with the help of local translators. Plus, of course, there are the many artefacts and objects that are still on display in museums across the world today.
    The two boks I use in thish video are available in both English and German:
    William Frame and Laura Walker. EN: James Cook. The Voyages. DE: James Cook. Die Reisen
    Adrianne L. Kaepler. EN: James Cook and the Exploration of Pacific. DE: James Cook und die Entdeckung der Südsee.

    As a New Zealand citizen. It is very beautiful to hear our nations past history be discussed with such admiration and historical value. Thank you! Also side note, the Maori canoe is called a Waka for any future reference. You did amazingly🌷

      Being someone from NZ too, it makes me stupidly happy when people actually mention our country. So happy some people actually put in effort to try and learn things about New Zealand. Why am I wake? Idk but have a good one mate.

      Thank you, it means a lot to me! Funnily I've just learned about the term Waka the other day - there is an exhibition by a Maori artist here in Vienna at the moment where it was mentioned.

    Cook was chopped to pieces after he was killed and his body parts sent to villages along the Kona Coastline. They had thought he was a god and treated very well, but he returned after his mast broke and got into an altercation with the natives over them taking items made of iron from his ship. They figured a god would never have a broken mast, so they lost esteem for him and killed him (probably a failed hostage situation ensued as a result of the altercation).

    Cook ran out of luck when some Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiians) had enough of the invaders and wiped him out. Polynesia was under constant European invasions. It wasn't friendship.

    • @MelangeASMR
      @MelangeASMR  2 роки тому +9

      Yeah, what's really stuck with me is that the initial success of Cook's voyage was so heavily dependent on a local translator and the fact that many of the languages were related in the first place. I didn't get the impression that him and his crew had particular diplomatic skills...

      @@MelangeASMR England took possession of The Kingdom of Hawaiʻi for a century when England released the Nation. Then the U.S. illegally overthrew the Hawaiʻi monarchy and imprisoned the last Queen. Lili'uokalani was able to preserve Hawaiʻi sovereignty with tremendous presence and skills before she died. To this day the U.S. refuses to release.

    About the young boy who got onboard the Resolution and also got into "unspeakable torment and started crying", that is quite understandable. For me, I don't think it is a "torment" but is more of a "tanthrum". I know I may be overgeneralizing, but there are cases where young children would nag a lot because their carry out their desires - which can be anything during their age. But, that is just my opinion. That's all ☺️

    Back in those days if a ship from a European nation turned up on your shores that was it for the local people. Their culture, way of life, religious beliefs, mineral wealth etc. were about to be destroyed or taken from them by force, and if they resisted, they would be crushed.

      Back on those days if a ship from the Barbery Coast arrived on the shores of a west European nation, from Spain, France, England, Ireland even as far north as Iceland, it was for slaves to sold in the slave markets of North Africa.
