The tip to focus your eyes on where you want to go changed everything for me and took me a from a beginner to a solid intermediate. I think as we're getting started in surfing we naturally just look forward because we're scared of wiping out. But if you just keep focus on where you're trying to be and you have the fundamentals down (popping up properly, weight distribution, etc) your body practically does the rest for you.
I’ve been avoiding backside barrels for years now, despite my local being a pretty mean backside barrel on its days. It’s sorta an all or nothing, so there’s hardly smaller days to work this. I never learned to pig dog or pooh dog or whatever it’s called, when I was younger, so at 42 it’s a little weird trying when I was a longboarder for many years and only ever dropped in fully standing up. That’s not to say I never made big backside drops, I just never pulled into barrels with that technique. I’d usually set up off the bottom and find a section to hit rather than try to hunt any barrels. I’ve only ever tried this technique maybe 6 or 7 times now, first pulling into close out sections running out in front of me after pumping down the line first, and more recently straight off the take off grabbing rail. I’ve only had two with some noticeable rail engagement/setting the rail, and some obvious travel time. I’m usually just taking a beating however and praying my board doesn’t give me a shinner, which happens often when I pull in and just eat it. Today I made a drop backside, sliding down and eventually getting my rail to set and drive me forward. I’m thinking now, after watching this, maybe it was because I entered late waiting to see who was going. Anyways, I got a nice golf clap and nod of approval from our local 15 year old, home schooled, grom that surfs with us Uncles every morning. So I almost felt accomplished. 😂😂😂 I think this South is supposed to be better tomorrow, I’m gonna think about the entry and hips forward and give it another go in the AM if the little barrels are setting up again on the takeoff in this tide window like they were today. Thanks for the tips. 🤙🤙
