+wes worach I do wear my SM influence on my sleeve, that's for sure. He is one of my biggest and most enduring inspirations! But always working toward developing my own voice. As Miles Davis said, “Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.”
While walking down memory lane with the Zep, I stumbled upon the Zepparella's then tripped over a precious jewel named Gretchen. Wow. I have been missing out on some great performers who add their own flavour to some classic music. Some day, hoping to watch from the audience.
Its been 10 years or more since I've found a guitarists that has really inspired me. I love zillions of guitarists, but there's just that handful that takes me to a another world. I think the last one was John Petrucci (I didn't get on the DT wagon til 1998.) From the first note I heard Gretchen play, I was hooked. I have tickets to see her and the AMAZING Zepperella on July 12th. Can't frikkn wait! I love the interplay between Gretchen and Angeline in this song.
+RME76048 Thank you so much! Working on finishing a monstrous new album (monstrous in that it may not all fit onto not CD... yikes). More on the way soon, and thank you for the kind words and support!
I love the fact I had no idea what directions this song was taking! It was like the end of a story and another story just pops up! I also love her picking style. I use the same one after seeing Steve Morse with the Dregs many hundreds of years ago! Gretchen, you're my new favorite! Word!
Just love her music. Have played her "Hale Souls" cd umpteen times. IMO, she has an early Pat Metheny vibe too her jazzier tunes. She is however, Gretchen. And her styling is just incredible. Very underrated guitarist! Love her music!
+PGeorge61 Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words. It really means so much to me. I'm constantly working to learn, grow, evolve. And being in the same paragraph as Pat Metheny makes my day!
+Gretchen Menn Hahaha! You've suddenly found out how to comment! Two years ago, this was?! My, how time flies. It's all true. I like female vocal, and people accuse me of just liking attractive female players and singers but that is NOT true, that is not true. It is all about the music. (Oh, I'm male, by the way, the icon is just my favourite photo of Kate Bush!)
I know, it's very belated. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go down the rabbit hole of UA-cam commenting, as I get so behind on replies to my other social media... plus UA-cam can be a super negative place, and I just don't like to look most of the time. But it does mean so much to me to hear if people like what I do, and I wanted to respond. :-)
+Gretchen Menn It can be a bit flame war oriented. There are some strange people who like to cause trouble. But no, on the whole, positive stuff doesn't attract the trolls. And so you should have no trouble. But yes, my son is a musician and he has some videos up here and elsewhere, and he tells me that he never looks at the comments. I can understand why not. [Alpines - Empire!]
Ha! Indeed. I always say I don't need either the ego strokes (a solid sense of where I am and where I want to be is imperative for growth and evolution) or recreational bullying or bashing (we all have enough inner critics with whom we wrestle). On the other hand, connecting with people who do enjoy what I do means so much to me. Furthermore, I do pay attention if someone has some well-intended and solidly-reasoned feedback on something relevant.
Great job Gretchen, great job by everyone :) I like the accents and the little wild wild licks you put in to counterpuch on that happy melody. Thats really cool. Rythym section sounds nice and solid. Thanks for this :)
Gretchen, It's cool seeing the Marshall head in the back ! I just wished for you to know that I stopped by here and commented in a further show of support to you my friend ! It matters most to me to simply tell you thank you for your efforts in music !! Your awesome Gretchen , thank you !!!
Well...let's see.......I've watched and listened to this video at least 50 times. It just keeps getting better and better. It is best listened to with a good set of headphones. I'm hoping to catch a live performance one day.....perhaps with Zepparella? Thank You Gretchen.
+Jimmy B Thank you so much! Really happy if you like the tune. I'm finishing up my second album of original music now, and hope to play more live shows soon!
Hi Gretchen....I saw your advert for GHS strings. I just came from Haelstrom vids and you kick their azz pretty hard. Not just for sexy show...but real musical prowess. Very nice keep on rocking!
+Gretchen Menn Thanks Gretchen...you guys rock. I would love to see you guys do Achilles Last Stand as a request!! I think when you made a speech in NoHo you mentioned you went to school in the area, now that I remember. Love your playing...:)
Yes, I did go to school there, so have a lot of wonderful memories with the area. My classical guitar teacher is there, and we stay in touch. I would LOVE to do Achilles Last Stand! Clementine is the one you'll need to take that up with, though. Apparently it's super difficult on drums. :-)
+Gretchen Menn yes, hard playing the galloping drum beat. I can totally tell you had a good teacher, you have a very good proper left hand technique. Cant wait to see Zepperella back in NoHo. You should try to get into Infinity Hall in Hartford which is new place only 50 miles south of NoHo. My band is doing a American Cancer Society fund raiser there in Aug. I saw Al Dimeola there. And should think about an all female Dixie Dregs tribute. You could totally pull it off. :)
A Dixie Dregs tribute? Now THAT is a vote of confidence, and a terrifying (though perhaps thrilling prospect)! :-) Thank you for the kind words. I can't say enough about Phillip de Fremery. Any good habits I have are to his credit, and that which is lacking, I chalk up to not enough time with him. I do still try to make occasional pilgrimages, and just recently emailed with him about trying to work together remotely. Great you're doing a fundraiser! Big kudos to you and your band.
+flavy1000 Thank you so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it! There are more and more women killing it on guitar recently, too. Check out my buddies Nili Brosh, Nita Strauss, Aleks Sever, to name just a few, and there's always the legendary Jennifer Batten.
Oh ! Thks for answering and yeah I´´l take your advice on checking them..I only new Nita Strauss, for her playing with The Iron Maidens, but I´ll listen for sure to the ones you named...And will keep on tracking yourmusic too, as soon as my son recovers from his UC..Really made me so happy thanks a lot Gretchen! Lovings from Argentina
Hi ...I couldn´t wait to check out the "list" right now..and.. Gretchen, they're all amazing guitar players..!!.But, the one that really shook me was... Gretchen, I dare asking you about your collabs with Jason, what about that? I read something about that in his Facebook page, to say, a year or two ago, but, never again... I´d love to listen to your music together, and Jason composing again!
There is a reason why both males and females wanna play guitar its because guitar is badass Gretchen you are badass and play fucking awesome 🤟 i just discovered your channel love it.
OK, I'm back. Angeline Saris. Love, Love, Love. In a musical way (mostly). I am a Bass player, and have become a fan of Angeline's. Besides being drop dead sexy, gorgeous, and captivating, she is a straight in the pocket Bass player! That's probably a run on sentence.....but my LA teacher was asleep half the time, so what do you expect. I digress. Gretchen, and Angeline together is killer. I listen to "Scrap Metal" (see above) daily. Keep rockin' Gretchen......and of course, Angeline. 😁
Great Song, and I really liked the flow as well as the tasty breaks! I read the comments below, and nobody asked this question so I will. It could be the age of the group, as most of them would probably go for a comparison to a more recent instrumentalist such as Joe Satriani, but your style is much different. I love both Steve Via & Joe Satriani, and they have both done wonders for the recognition of instrumental guitar I just feel everyone forgets about a player who really pushed this format much earlier which was Ronnie Montrose during his Solo and Gamma years. I can only assume you were exposed to his playing as your style reflects it to my ears.
+Elmer Croan Thanks so much for the kind words. I absolutely love Satch and Vai, and I know Ronnie Montrose is a legend as well, but he is one of so many guitarists whose playing I need to dig into more. Grunge music was reigning supreme when I was growing up, so I had to raid my dad's record collection to find that stuff that really got me going in terms of guitar--Steve Morse is a huge inspiration, as is Jeff Beck, Eric Johnson, Django Reinhardt, Frank Zappa...
I was remiss in leaving out Frank Zappa as I loved his work both as an artist's well as producer of the early Alice Cooper. Steve Morse I always loved, and due to the fortune of one of my friends being an assistant manager at Guitar Center and calling me I got to attend an informal workshop with Steve Morse over 20 years ago. My wife was amazed at not only his playing ability as we were about 6 feet away, but how relaxed he was to be talking to a small group at.the same time. All great players to pick and choose from when creating your style which again I really like, and was my reasoning for mentioning these other players. Keep Rocking !!
That's awesome. Yes, Steve is one of the most genuinely humble, decent guys in the industry. And I always love hearing recommendations for guitarists with whom I should become more familiar!
Gretchen, you and Anna Kristina should go on tour together doing your own Rock songs.. I think it would be great you two together.. YOU two were GREAT together.. Think about it,, give Anna a call and form a new group.. I know you guys can do it..
Gretchen,, you play guitar great by the way... I'm glad you and Anna are still friends.. Make sure you tell me if your going to do an album together one of these days.. Thanks and keep up the good work...
Gretchen , I sense that you might of been inspired by a host of different sources all at once for which you may have drawed upon in writing and playing this , which all appears evident in providing a positive effect in the end result here ? However it may have came to you , please know that I enjoyed viewing it very much ! Emmence respect for your musicianship alway's dear Gretchen !!!
Every time I listen to this, I just want to go and storm the Winter Palace. Or face off the Prussian mercenaries from behind a barrier with just a firm conviction and a pointed stick. They shall not pass!
Gretchen, come to the UK, do a solo tour. I won't kid you, your audience will be composed of mostly males in the fifties and above who just love guitar. And if you can throw in a Led Zep cover or two, it wouldn't hurt. You don't necessarily need a vocalist. C'mon, how much would it cost? We are hurting for good music over here. All our good bands go overseas, damn them.
+Flo Jo I would LOVE to! I'm working on finishing up my second album now, and should have more time for touring with the original music when that's done. Awesome Kate Bush photo, by the way. She is one of my absolute favorites.
+Gretchen Menn I worship Kate Bush. The Kate Bush tribute band 'Cloudbusting' (they are great) are playing tonight near me, and I am so torn. I no longer like to go to big venues with all the noise and the drunks and the thought of the travel back ... but I so want to hear some Kate Bush live! Decisions, decisions ......
Vai is guitar royalty and one of the most prominent ambassadors for the instrument--a brilliant musician and a gracious human. Any comparison (or hearing influences of) either of the royal Steves (Vai or Morse) is flattery of the very highest. :-)
I'm glad you liked my compliments :) You are quite the outstanding player, and I'll have to add that I hear some Jimmy Page influence also. I'll never forget the time I saw Steve Vai in Northampton at the Calvin Theater and I just acquired front row tickets from a scalper outside 45 min. before the show. Steve came up to me almost pointblank from the stage with flying fingers so close to me and blew my mind with not only his playing but his choreography. He is quite the showman. I got to meet him outside later. Really intelligent human being, down to earth, inspiring, and sounds like he really wants to pass on his knowledge to other aspiring musicians. I had a guitar teacher in college who went to university of Miami with Steve Morse back in the day. He said everyone kind of sounded alike...all these jazz students, and all of sudden there was this kid Steve who blew everyones mind playing all the different genres with rock stuff no one ever heard before. They knew he was something special and would take it somewhere.
+Shadow Arcanis Good point... As well as THE Jeff Beck...When you can hear A LOT of influences in an artist's work, you know they've been in the woodshed...
I don't subscribe to 'best female' this or that. Mom taught me to judge everyone on their own merit and gender was not part of the equation. You're either exceptionally exquisite at what you do, or not. Gender plays no role. Gretchen is phenomenal. Someone who could easily cover Frank Zappa if she chose to 'hear' the material. And speaking of material, I'd say Gretchen is marriage material, to my mind. Talent like that, with intelligence and a sensitive heart? And hey, I play guitar too, but not like her lol
Best female guitarist-composer of all time ! Morse influence is very evident , no doubt about it ! Steve is the best , period !!!
+wes worach I do wear my SM influence on my sleeve, that's for sure. He is one of my biggest and most enduring inspirations! But always working toward developing my own voice. As Miles Davis said, “Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.”

Too good ! I never tire of listening to it ! Thanks!
This one goes to eleven! Eternally grateful to my good friend Joel who introduced me to this amazing on so many levels guitarist.
Che Brava e che Gran Canzone , Great Song , Magic Guitar , very Good Guitar Sister 👍🙋🏻♂️✌☮🎼🎸🔥

I love your playing and tone! wonderful song and video... I also love Angeline's bass playing. You two complement each other.
Wow. Great technique. Great songwriting. It has been over a year now... please deliver some more!
+RME76048 Thank you so much! Working on finishing a monstrous new album (monstrous in that it may not all fit onto not CD... yikes). More on the way soon, and thank you for the kind words and support!
You are So Welcome! :) Can't wait! Jam as much onto that CD as possible!
All 3 musicians did a great job on this original composition by Gretchen Menn
#thomasperry #gretchenmenn #angelinesaris #halesouls #musicvideo
Beautifully done. Great musicianship and very well produced as well.
I love the fact I had no idea what directions this song was taking! It was like the end of a story and another story just pops up!
I also love her picking style. I use the same one after seeing Steve Morse with the Dregs many hundreds of years ago! Gretchen, you're my new favorite! Word!
Very nice guitar playing Gretchen! Cool sounds. G-Rock likes!
Aux barricades! I keep coming back to this .....
Awesome Gretchen!
Keep rockin!!
Discovered Gretchen through her bass player, so thank you thank you thank you Angeline!!!
Very nice. I'm old enough to remember April Lawton and it's so wonderful to see women shred. Keep it up and we'll follow.
+Michael Beesch Thank you so much! I'm working on my second album now. :-)
Just love her music. Have played her "Hale Souls" cd umpteen times. IMO, she has an early Pat Metheny vibe too her jazzier tunes. She is however, Gretchen. And her styling is just incredible. Very underrated guitarist! Love her music!
TOTAL Pat M influence...Hmmm, Steve Morse, Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny as inspiration...LOOK OUT for this one...
+PGeorge61 Thank you so much for the incredibly kind words. It really means so much to me. I'm constantly working to learn, grow, evolve. And being in the same paragraph as Pat Metheny makes my day!

Came for the technical mastery and the undeniable charms of Gretchen, stayed for the wonderful riffs and chord progressions.
+Flo Jo Thank you so much!!

Unique and awesome! Great work Gretchen and friends :)
Love it.

It matters most to me to simply tell you thank you for your efforts in music !!
Your awesome Gretchen , thank you !!!
I was listening to this earlier today on CD .and wondered where the title and inspiration behind this song came from ? Great tune ..blessings to you .
Well...let's see.......I've watched and listened to this video at least 50 times. It just keeps getting better and better. It is best listened to with a good set of headphones.

Gretchen Menn Wonderful! Hopefully you can perform in the Charlotte, NC area soon. Peace!
Very unique writing! Great!!
+Edward Domer Thank you! Really happy if you like it!
This is very, very good. Nothing in this track is predictable in any way. At point 2:10 this track is just on fire until the fade out.
+David Brandt Thank you so much! What a great compliment!
Damn, I love those high sustained notes that end the phrases .... wheee!

Amazing. Sort of has a Steve Vai vibe but with a little more of a bluesy edge. I like it a lot.
Being in the same sentence as His Highness Vai is some of the highest praise I can imagine!
Gretchen Menn well deserved I assure you.
