How effective is the Lifestraw?... Lifestraw vs. muddy puddle

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 21 бер 2018
  • The Lifestraw is a convenient portable water filtration device that I often use during hiking and camping trips. They say it will filter 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and protozoan parasites and reduce turbidity down to 0.2 microns. I always used it in freshwater sources that appeared to be fairly clean. In this test, I show what happens when using the Lifestraw in a very turbid stagnant muddy puddle. Would you drink this water?

I see a lot of people comment how gross it is that I drank my own spit (or backwash). Seriously? Think about it. Unless you are 100% fed intravenously then you swallow your spit every time you eat or drink.

I was hiking way up high in Santa Rosa CA mountains about 1969 and drank water out of a fast running stream.
On the way back i started to feel a little sick. (I was visited at a friend house at the age of 13). I do not remember much about the ordeal, but i got very sick an delirious and in bed for a couple days. (His dad was pharmacist by the way.) I do remember laying in bed and looking on the floor and seeing scorpions moving around..
The point being i never drank any running water again. Just watching this test makes me think,,, do i really want to try this far out on a long hike. I am sure it is safe but being as sick as i was, and totally out of my head for a few days i would not want to chance it ever again. But if i was to go way out by myself,, i would definitely want this as a back up.

Using something similar, the Sawyer water filter, I filtered some mead (wine made using honey and water) after the fermentation stopped and all the dead yeast went to the bottom. I tried coffee filters to catch whatever yeast stirred up, to no avail. The yeast slipped through the coffee filter and kept the mead murky. Putting it through the Sawyer water filter, turned it crystal clear.

Hunter Henryk No man, no shits at all. The filter works great. After about 1000 liters of water passing through it eventually gets clogged and will no longer filter. That's when it should be discarded. Of course using it in water this dirty would cause it to clog sooner.

They now make a life straw that's built into a carrying bottle. Great video demonstration. I have always drank out of puddles with it, the downside is how hard you have to actually work to suck the water and that you can't really save any for later. The new bottle is much more convenient

You should use a piece of cloth to filter the big things out and let the water sit so the sediments you just stirred up can settle out before drinking it.
Use a life straw when you are on the move and can't use a bigger filter like a Sawer mini then use the larger one when you get to a camp/safe site.
