    Fantastic editing as usual!
On a side note, isn't the focusing distance ring and aperture ring inaccurate because cctv lenses are usually made for c mount camera and adapting them to MFT or other mounts change the flange focal distance? Doesn't change the fact that it's crap though

Thank you. You are making a very good point about the flange distance. And something is telling me that you I might be wrong and you are right on this one… I am just human 🤷‍♂️😋

@@fredr. Still, you made your point! I really can't see why people would buy this lens when you can find better lenses for not that much more on the used market.

Fred, I've seen some of your videos and you have some (strong) but very sensible opinions on some topics. I am usually a EOS M/magic lantern user and recently switched to MFT for some greater range. I see this lens used in the magic lantern community a lot. I've also used meike lenses on my eos M and loved it.
All that aside, I wanted to ask you your opinion on this. I can spend 140$ on a 7Artisans 35mm f0.95 (used, good condition) or 70$ for a TTartisan 35mm f1.4 new. I didn't like the seemingly worse low light performance on MFT and am leaning towards the f 0.95, but is it worth the higher price? FWIW: I am not a kind of "cinematographer" to set up lights and work in controlled environments most of the time, I want to shoot street photo and video out in nature. So I thought better light performance would be desirable. What do you think?

    • @fredr.
      @fredr.  Рік тому +1

Very good question Zak and interesting because I am looking for a f 0.95 too. So I had to do some homework as I don’t own a TTartisans… yet, so IMO:
      f0.95:
      - Too soft at corners even when stepping down the aperture
      - 0.95 is mainly good for photo. For video, Good luck focusing moving subjects. Excepted if you are in controlled environment.
      - But maybe you want the Snyder dreamy look? Great but he did not rack the focus. Pros were doing the job for him.
      - 140$? Not a good deal as the lens new is priced $190. At $100 or $120max, yes! But after watching the review of Arthur R, who has all my respect for his honesty, I would advise to not even spend 100 in this lens
Also he add that: “Chromatic aberration are «horrible»”
      Here his review ua-cam.com/video/AExDaEF8U1A/v-deo.html
      - The focusing ring only turn to 45 degrees. Definitely not enough for video.
      - Aperture ring is not clickless… Not good for video. Especially when the aperture is next to the camera body.
To sum up: the 0.95 is just TTartisans cashing out on the f.95 trend.
      f1.4:
-Still the same 45deg of focusing and clicked aperture but the rings are not too close to the camera body. That’s good.
      - Still a lot of chromatic aberrations on the reviews but this is part of budget lenses.
      - Looking better than the f0.95
Ok let’s conclude: The f1.4 is a Better deal for the money and let’s be honest: no one shot at f0.95. Even if you do, you will have to put a ND filter because of the (exterior) lights. And it is too soft to focus properly.
Someone who collected all the APSC from TT said that they are better than 7artisans and better go to f1.4.
Now real talk. I love the G85. I still own it. But it is hard for me to recommend it over EOS-M due to the maturity of Magic lantern. The G85 will disappear before the EOS-M so don’t waste your time and ressource on it if you are on a budget.
Hope I could help, If not… You can do whatever you want with your money 🥳🤩

@@fredr. Thank you for all the effort, truly appreciate it. Just a small thing that I was looking at the 7artisans 0.95, not the TTartisans, which in my home market is about 60 Euro more expensive. I've spent days looking at reviews for both and it seems the 7artisans one is much better when it comes to IQ especially when stopping down to about f2, and it also has clickless aperture etc. I've heard more praise for the LAOWA lenses at this speed but they're a whole other price class.
Dustin Abbott review covered it well: youtub.be/vwOk20hnfes
Your points about trying to follow focus at 0.95 and the smaller focus throw are still completely valid and will help me reconsider again.
I don't mind spending a bit more because I'm on a rare trip to japan rn and I just want to maximize on value while I'm here, not on money saving mode (Do you think there are some good bargains I can only get here?) :D I can always resell the lenses for even higher than I buy it here, back in EU.
I got a GX85 recently mostly as a future B-cam because of its 100MB native 4k, so I can get an Olympus or a Pana pro or even a BMPCC4K camera down the line, I stopped investing my time and money in ML and EOSM mostly because of how cumbersome it is - as much as I loved how hands on the whole thing was, a random purple frame or a frozen ui can completely ruin the experience when you're out with friends trying to shoot a quick high quality scene.
My meike has honestly spoiled me and I truly hate the clinical look I get from my more expensive sigma lenses for example, I keep going for that ever elusive "vintage" feel you get from cheaper glass... Which is why I'm still considering this, or some vintage, which I could adapt to both my systems, but again, it's an investment... That's why I want an experienced videographer's advice like yours as opposed to relying on advice from Artur R when he said the sigma is better value for example hahah.
I was just wondering if the 0.95 would help me get more light while filming at night on the tiny MFT mount. I only just realised it's going to be even more difficult to get the thing to focus :D

      @fredr.  Рік тому +1

@zaks7 Sorry for the late reply. I did not see YT held back your comment for review.
OK 1st thing first: I am a newbie. Not experienced at all.
2: Japan is no more reputed to be a good spot for lens bargain. Excepted for the vintage made in Japan (eg Canon FD). Their main avantage is the quality of the second hand market. Double check everything on EBay before buying while keeping the shipping and UE VAT taxes in mind.
3: 0.95 will definitely helps in low light. Yet, no one in Hollywood is using this aperture. In fact mostly just the YTbers are trying to film in low-light. At Hollywood, they light the scene enough to kill the noise, and reduce the brightness in post.
After spending countless hours watching the reviews of the 0.95 of Meike and 7artisans. It seems that Meike is the better one for sharpness around f2. But hard to find a used model for cheap. But if money is not an issue, so yes: Laowa is the way the go. IMO even is they are more expensive than Meike or 7Art. they are making the best budget lenses.
Yet I don't have any problem with the Meike at f1.8 in low light. So f1.4 should be quite good enough.
Have a good trip Zack, and let me know what you bring back home. ✌️

@@fredr. Hi Fred, yes, I have to confess watching these films on UA-cam myself and it was quite compelling. I've started building my own set and have four lenses so far. I bought a very cheap 58mm f1.4 on ebay which looked rough on the outside but optically clean. When it arrived I noticed bit had a small chip on the intern lens. My heart sank, but I thought I would give it a try anyway. Luckily on a gh4 m4/3 you can see this and the images a super sharp with amazing blur outside the subject. I got a partial refund and only paid €20 for something that would could cost €60+ in pieces. I then got a much better one for my own ego than need. Both are very nice lenses but I use the chipped one most because I would be really pissed it if damaged the nice one.
