Hope you enjoy my first reaction to Episode 8 of Series 12 of Taskmaster starring Greg Davies and Alex Horne and featuring Alan Davies, Desiree Burch, Guz Khan, Morgana Robinson and Victoria Coren Mitchell!

A detail i love in this episode is during the sports commentary task, on the sports update bar during Alan and Victorias attempt you can see "Wilkinson hits hole in 1", quickly followed by "(update) wilkinson disqualified". A fun nod to Potato-gate .

Honestly, Alan and Victoria's multi-sport is one of the tasks I've laughed most at out of any series. I think only Bob Mortimer's mask from the Champion of Champions hit me as hard...or maybe Liza Tarbuck and the Cake.

Update on the update: Someone on UA-cam did a video analysis and came to the conclusion that Wilkinson didn't step on the red green (even Alex Horn seems to have changed his mind after watching the analysis).
I thought that they would get 5 points deducted from their result, so if they came in second with the necklace but had done the wrong thing, they would have ended up with -1, not -5. Which is still a huge penalty.
That said, who cares about points (except that points determine who gets to be on Champion of Champions III)
Knew from the first episode that it was going to be a closely fought season, though Victoria is further adrift than I anticipated. It's more or less a three horse race now, and it may well come down to the final live task...exciting! =D

Yeah I was not a fan of the -5 points at all.
For me it almost made the popcorn necklace redundant as you could take hours over working out the negatives and still get points.
Also I saw some people on Twitter point out of it says to do the opposite of the following then that should also apply to saying "I did the right thing." so you either shouldn't say it or say "I didn't do the right thing." or something like that.
This episode isn't the first time Susie Dent has been referenced on this show. I would like to see her as a contestant. She would have a field day with the complicated task directions.

Suzy Dent just made my naughty list for doing Victoria wrong like that. It was a close call but, when 'literally' doesn't always mean 'literally' any more, I think a bit of leeway is needed.
I don't understand the point in waiting once you are the last one to stand up.
There were panels up between them so they couldn't see if the others had stood up yet or not.

They couldn't see everyone else. Because that would sort of ruin it.
I love the tableau they make just before the balloon pops. It says so much about each contestant, and game players in general. Alan stands professionally at ease with a huge smile, just enjoying himself. Desiree sits with determination and, frankly, quite a "manspread". This is a woman who knows who she is and makes no apologies. Guz stands with hands over his eyes showing the easily spooked little boy inside the usually cool, confident man. Morgana is posed as the perfect "Miss Scarlet" femme fatale, arms casually crossed and half-turned away. Do not underestimate her...she has secret talents and knows how to use them. And then there's Victoria in her "Velma" pose. Confident in her intellect, but shielding her less athletic nature with crossed arms. It should be the box cover for the next edition of the home game.
Victoria was the only person to notice that since the jack-in-the-box was playing the theme tune, it was probably going to pop up at the *end* of the theme tune, and she took full advantage of that.
That -5 is brutal in terms of the series score - seems unlikely that Desiree can come back from that in the last two episodes. If she had rung the bell, she was faster than Guz, so Alan, Guz and Morgana would have one fewer point than they do and Desiree would have ten more, so I think she would still have been tied second, and even have been tied first in the episode? It is a shame, but it does seem to be a three horse race after this.
There are not only task with 10 points but one with 13 won by Jo Brand in the task "Horse or Laminator", hence the declaration of the win for Laminator 13:1 during the sports commentary.
Didn't Katherine Ryan score crazy points in a task that basically won her the series?
@@stingersplash Katherine Ryan scored 15 points out of a possible 12 during that task.
Also, I would love to see the unedited footage of Alan’s presumably minutes of slightly mournful contemplation before he actually did anything in the upside down task
It looked like Jonathan Creek was stuck on the crucial point of a case!
On the original programme he was there a flipping long time muttering.
Whether or not it is good for reacting, I'd recommend 'The Unbelievable Truth'. Hosted by David Mitchell, it's a radio show (hence whether it may be worth reacting to), you'll recognise most of the guests by now. There are over 150 episodes to work through and most are on YT.

I’m not into sports at all but I loved the sports commentating task. It was so good!
This show just gives you a great feeling and puts a smile on your face! Love it!
I am trying not to crush ridiculously hard on Morgana but when she shifted effortlessly into that commentary accent and then delivered great jokes I found myself flipping heelward 😆
Btw Neil, have you ever done a “shelf tour”? One of the things that first attracted me to the channel was my love of Kavalier & Clay, Fallout, Sandman, etc. (Kneejerk nerd bond 😆) Hope all’s well! Keep the great vids coming!
Has anyone recommended the show "Travel Man" to you yet? It's Richard Ayoade starring in a travel show hosted by a man who hates to travel. And the whole series is available for free on CBC's streaming service. I think you'll like it.
Was it just me that thought Victoria's upside-down face was an incredible impression of Axl Rose?
This was a great episode, I loved the upside-down face task in particular.
ALSO, this Monday I attended a recording at the studio! It was for the second New Years' special, and you'll probably only know Chair #2, but it's a great lineup and a very fun episode.

I'd like to see them do the upside-down face for Home Tasking. It's something people can be really creative with.
@@joycastle. When you go to audience things you actually have to sign something to say you won't disclose what happens in the episode.
No additional points for tiebreaks, and I, too, found myself thinking that "thwart" is a good word when Desiree mentioned it.
Speaking for myself, I take umbridge with Alex's scoring on the bell/popcorn issue - not with the fact that they gave the penalty, but with the fact that they removed the score they earned as well. In Series 4, for instance, they did a similar thing, giving a five-point penalty to contestants who ate a bar of chocolate, but that penalty was applied on top of the score they earned in the actual task. The person who was the fastest overall, but also ate the chocolate, scored zero. In this system, that would have scored negative five.
I am impressed with the fact that the two most tense moments in this entire series of the show have come from popping balloons. I'm not sure you noticed, (maybe you did, but the commentary left it ever-so-slightly ambiguous) but the dividers didn't just keep everyone socially distanced, they also prevented everyone from seeing when everyone else stood up, which is why people stayed down so much longer.
Yeah, I noticed that too, it definitely should have been scored according to time with a 5 point penalty for doing the wrong thing.
What is Vicky doing? Taking a photo upsidedown? Why not just rotate the picture? Oh... iPhone, got it! 😂
No, I think it was to see her hair 'standing up'. Also, I really don't she'd like to be called Vicky.
Also also, did a little google and confirmed my suspicion. The tie break just determines the episode winner, but no extra points are awarded towards the series total
I find it surprising that Victoria has no idea why a sport can be entertaining and why it is enjoyable given her love and skill for poker.

While I think Victoria would be a lot of fun to spend a weekend, drinking, gambling, and just having fun with. I bet she's a nightmare to live with.
It's not that David Mitchell has obviously married a girl that's way out of his league, I think it's more that Victoria has found a weak man who will do has he is told.

The balloon progress, had me scared and i was really nervous. I understand the double-negative (when it says "do the opposite")
I had to pause the ring the bell and get a pen and paper. Just could not let it go.
I just instinctively thought to ring the bell. Sometimes you just have to not think.
@@stingersplash That's a good point actually because you know how clever Victoria is. Desiree is said to be intelligent, and Alex asked Susie Dent, who is also known to be very intelligent ... and they all got it wrong. The others didn't overthink it and just went on instinct.
Me and Guz are good for that upside down face one,we've got the same beard, plus I've got long hair(think Jesus 👀)👌🤷♂️😂

Yeah no bonus points for winning the tie break, just determines who gets the prizes. That bell ringer basically eliminates Desiree. Had she won that task however it would have virtually guaranteed the series win.
I was so scared of Greg shouting at me there at the beginning. Literally, just before watching it, I received notification of a 'like' against a comment I made about how very unfair the scoring is on this programme. And as you can see, my UA-cam channel name is not my actual name. So I definitely felt like he was talking to me, although of course I know many others were saying the same thing.
I was also screaming get up haha. She was last up already it really didn't metter then you're closest to the end

I discovered your reaction videos Neil a little while ago, but I've only recently subbed. I'm loving this series. Was aware of AD, VCM and MR (grew up with her Australian cousins in the town she was born) and vaguely aware of DB and GK because of their other work on UK TV. I'm not sure why, but my mind turned to casting the next 'official' series. What does every one think of ...
David Mitchell, Rachel Riley (not sure how that'll go), Rob Brydon, Adam Hills and Meera Syal? Quietly I'd secretly really like Graham Norton to do a series if he can find the time.
Welcome aboard and thanks for subbing, Stu! I'm not familiar with Adam and Myra, but I'd be all for the other three signing on for a season of TM. That being said, I've heard that David Mitchell has expressly said that he will never take part because he'd be complete shit at it. :D
@@NeilTalks Yeah, I'd imagine David Mitchell is somewhere between Baddiel and Paul Sinha in competence, but it'd make good TV. And that dovetails nicely into my recommendations if you're looking for something new. Adam is the host of the weekly chat show 'The Last Leg' and Meera is probably best known as Ummi in 'The Kumars at No. 42'. Both thoroughly recommended and I'm pretty sure there will be at least clips of both somewhere on this site.
Look at Alan, nonchalantly meandering to second place in the series. Who'd have thought - I was so hoping he'd do well, and he somehow did, though I'm not sure how.

Your comments about this being such a great episode are interesting.
I think the series was really getting into its stride then Covid came along. They had to rethink the format and bring it back adhering to social distancing protocols.
This really did knock it back through having to change an existing and very successful show quite radically. The new format seemed a bit strange at first but we are getting used to it. That, combined with an excellent cast has elevated the show back to the levels we had got used to.
Hopefully when (if) things get back to normal the change back won't affect it too much.

It's funny to watch Alex whenever Greg mentions 'narrative' or 'backstory'. He was laughing about it on the podcast and you can see him smirking in this. Greg's number one phrase is "let's dig into the narrative shall we?"
Did you get the joke that Morgana was doing a Scottish accent because on any UK sports show with commentators, it's almost a rule that one must always be Scottish? I suspect that might have gone over the heads of people outside the UK.
And she absolutely nails it too, and that's coming from a Scot. I suspect it's meant to be Jim White so could be a nod to the impression Bob mortimer does of him on the Athletico Mince podcast

I have a feeling they've got used to the covid format of the show. Series 10 was all about people getting to leave the house, so there was a giddy excitment that powered everything along. But for me, series 11 dipped in terms of energy and I was a little worried that that would be how it was going to carry on but 13 is right back up there and going great and I think that has to be because everyone is more comfortable with the situation. Great cast also of course.
I'm not more comfortable with the situation I still want the pandemic to end.
How are you seeing these episodes? I can’t find them on youtube
