This film "Sun, Surf and Sky" showcases some of the seven tropical islands of Hawaii including Oahu, Hawaii, Kauai and Maui. It likely dates to the early 1950s, but post-1952 as the Convair CV-340, which entered Hawaiian service in 1952, is featured.
The film opens with the blue waters rushing against jagged rocks (:09). It was presented by Hawaiian Airlines (:16) and photographed by Norman Schley (:33). Schley was a filmmaker from Wisconsin whose company Picturelogue produced a series of travel films. Actor George Marr narrates (:40), hula dances swing their skirts on screen (:47). Coconuts are zoomed in on (:52). One surfer takes to the waters of Waikiki Beach in Oahu, Honolulu (:56). Schley is pictured with his camera and wife, Ruth (1:05). Modern metropolitan (1:27) and residential sections. Vacationers relax with Pacific waters behind them (1:39). An extinct volcano near Waikiki Beach’s Diamond Head (2:03). Kodak Hawaii’s hula show follows (2:07). An Eastman Kodak vendor follows (2:33) as a sailor has the ability to share his experience with loved ones (2:37). The cottage home of Robert Lewis Stephenson follows (3:02) where he had once written a poem to a beautiful Hawaiian princess. Main roadways of Honolulu (3:10), City Hall (3:14), Kawaiahao Church (3:16), the Kuhio Motion Picture Theater (3:20) and the Judiciary Building are all put on display (3:25). A statue of King Kamehameha the Great (3:31) follows. He was the ruler attributed with uniting the islands. Scenes of downtown Honolulu follow (3:38). Luxury beach resorts line Waikiki Beach (4:06). A twin hull catamaran bobs in blue waters (4:14). Tourists hop onto a rented outrigger canoe (4:36). Hanauma Bay (5:09) sits on the southeast coast of O’ahu. Natural coves and pools encourage vacationers to relax (5:22). A vehicle moves up the highway for Nu’uanu Pali (5:38) and the massive green valley is pictured afterwards (5:47). The Diamond Head is pictured in the distance around suburban Honolulu (5:52). Locals work on a drag net for fishing (6:06). They are also pictured preparing for a feast (6:31) and helping to drag in the massive catch (6:52). This is referred to as community fishing. The pig for the feast roasts in tea leaves (7:05) and is covered with sugar cane stalks (7:12). Islanders ready themselves around a long table (7:17). Two men prepare to go spear fishing (7:28). Their colorful catches are drug up (7:36). One of the fish is shown to be a colorful parrot fish (7:50). The Hawaiian airport appears (7:57) hosting 44 passenger Convair 340’s (7:57). The plane takes travelers to the garden island of Kauai (8:24). Alcoholic refreshments are set out in a colorful montage (9:04). Within a banana grove, the yellow fruit is shown to grow upside down (9:14). Spouting Horn; a blowhole on the southern coast of the island, was created by volcanic eruptions (9:29). Waimea Canyon is Hawaii’s Grand Canyon (9:47). Kalalau Valley follows (10:06). A vehicle takes tourists towards Hanalei Bay (10:22). A waterfall erupts on Bali Hai (10:34). The film returns to Honolulu (12:23). A Douglas DC-3 is pictured flying from Honolulu to Maui’s Hana Airport (12:48). Cattle ranches (14:21) and children are pictured (15:21). The children are seen just after Easter church services. Hotel Hana and Maui (15:50). The main lodge and garden lodges (16:00). Guests can enjoy clear pools or ocean access here (16:13). Today there is no more sugar, banana, or (soon) pineapple production. It's all moved to South America or the Philippines. The lack of jobs and increasing housing costs have resulted in an economic crisis only survivable by the already wealthy. You have to leave the state when you graduate school as there's not enough work locally.

My grandmother said that when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred it was hard to understand at first because most people knew next to nothing about Hawaii beyond that it was a US territory. It would be like an attack on American Samoa or Saipan today.

Hawaiian Airline should have reviewed this film for local words & pronunciation. The producer got a lot of things wrong.

This film was shot in 1952; the vehicles have 1952 license plates, used for only that one year.

Those smoking hula dancers at the back stage destroyed my 'By gone era' fantasy though.
