Hey John,Thank you for coaching& positive input to the young fishermen onboard the trip. That's what our future generation of outdoorsman need. Them boys will remember that trip when they're men!

50 years ago (I'm 71 now) I used to go out ocean blue fishing at night out of Captree. Would see acres of squid in the boat lights - squid as far as the eye could see - and we filled 30 gallon GARBAGE PAILS with 12 - 15lbs bluefish. Some nights it was an INSANE melee, and friggin' DANGEROUS - with fish blood, snapping bluefish and slime all underfoot simultaneously. On one particular night, the guy next to me was lifting a fish over the rail. Just then, it bit off at the hook, and his rocketing 8oz SINKER missed my head by inches and smashed the glass window behind me into a million pieces! God, what a night!!!

John...Good to see the big blues are coming back and young fishermen enjoying the fight they put up. I'm 76 and grew up in South Jersey. Fifty years ago I can remember going out with my dad on MISS BARNEGAT LIGHT and catching blues that size all night. It got to where it was boring and trying to keep lines from tangling on a head boat was a pain. In the LBI surf when they would blitz the beaches people who didn't have any sense stayed in the water and got to get lots of stitches. I learned very young to keep my fingers away from a bluefish's mouth!

Great comment…we moved to Colorado in ‘91 but had a cottage right on Misquamicut beach since the 60’s. I was born in 83 and my folks sold the cottage in 2010…I hate that they did because I’d be happy to live there year round now. Anyways, I still remember going out on the Blackhawk and MiJoy as a young kid and fishing the overnight blues/striper trips with my family. There would usually be at least 20 of us as the whole family owned cottages on Lawton Ave right off the beach. Last time I was back east was 2011 and I took a couple Colorado friends for a 2 week road trip with my brother and I. We went out on the Blackhawk and the captain (son of the original captain) still remembered our family going out on boat almost every weekend in the 80’s-early 90’s. The fishing was spectacular and I ended up catching 15+ blues and winning the pool with a 16lb monster. I sure do miss those times and hope they make it back East someday soon.

Hi John… Another great learning video. I’m wondering if you know of of a rod 8 - 8’6” Medium Moderate that is very lightweight that can handle 20lb tarpon? Your Lamiglass GSB Skinner rod has become a bit too heavy for me. Fish the beach and the intercoastal in Florida. Not all your subs are men, and have less of a problem casting your Lamiglass at my age.

Yup,Capt.John Larsen. One night onboard the huge weekies showed up! John hollerd down, "If ya have a eel lure, throw it out there" the surface was covered with huge weekies. Bailed a burlap bag of them! those were the hey days of the bluefish and weakfish. i will never forget.

I happened upon your videos a few years back and have been watching all of them over and over as I'm a complete novice. It motivated me to buy a boat worthy of the "race" and to pursue my passion for fishing. I owe you a det of gratitude. Please continue to inspire and teach. We need more men like you, captain John and JT (next drift). Thank you sir.

If you ever get a chance to book a trip with him and John it's well worth it to get that first hand experience. Definitely a trip the boys will never forget. Thank you to both Johns.

The seals have been out there fishing long before us. They fish to live , not to recreate. They have learned and been conditioned to associate boats with an easy meal. Just like porpoises ,sharks , herons, and other creatures.

Back in the late '70s, early '80s bluefish would come into the Chesapeake Bay in huge schools . My friends and I would take my little skiff about 200 yards off the beach and cast Hopkins lures out into the schools and catch monsters on every cast. It was amazing!

Look at the size of those blues! And look at how strong and hard they kept pulling! I can just imagine how exhausted the kids were, along with the soreness you had John.
I've never caught any blues in the upper teens. I'm used to 10-12 pound gators in June and October. I was lucky enough to one time catch a 36" 14 pounder during the crazy fall run of 2022.

A few years ago I was a mate on the Fish Trap out of Watch Hill. He got into some blues at SW Ledge using umbrella rigs. The first rig came up with 4 blues. Nearly put my back out hauling them over the transom. All were 21-23 lbs.. we switched to bucktails so we didn't kill the customers. And the mate!

You are not alone fishing for cod off the East coast Scotland , seals swim round the boat waiting for some one to hook a fish then they steal the fish , no chance of hooking a decent fish . The problem is that they learn from each other .

  • @sergeykhaitov678

Any reason not to use simple fishing / landing glove - good chance to get a hook/teeth into your hand, also much easier to grab fish and safer grabbing leader? I also think John would not lose his camera if he had glove (not so much struggle at all to bring this fish with gloved hands). I fish same area often and always use gloves, grab tail keep them upside down and they usually will behave.

Loosing a fish to seals is the least of the problems you will start to observe as the seal population continues to grow.
When seals start to become abundant the issues is parasitic worms.
Seals are full of worms, and I don’t mean infested, I mean FULL.
Those worms will infect all the inshore fish.
Areas north of you that have a lot of seals, all the inshore fish you catch have worms in the meat.

They need to bring back a bounty like that over on the west coast. Sea Lions are way over populated now. They are beginning to effect threatened fish stocks that have already been heavily regulated to conserve at risk species. There have been limited efforts to control them, but not nearly enough.
