- 🌟 DigNation 20 tickets are now on sale: digventures.com/projects/dign... Not all archaeologists need trowels to find ancient sites. John Gater is probably one of the most famous of these archaeologists: he uses geophysics. It's scientific, effective and very, very funny. In this talk, John shares the hidden joys of probing below ground in search of the past.

This talk was given at DigNation, a crowdfunded festival organised by DigVentures and Sir Tony Robinson in honour of beloved Time Team archaeologist Mick Aston. Learn more at digventures.com/ - Наука та технологія
I was struck by the team all racing over to stand over the body at the scene of the hit and run at the end....
It became clear to me early on as I was binge watching the series last year that TT worked as a 3 day dig setup ONLY because of Geophys. John is in one sense the under appreciated star and unsung hero of Time Team....
Top marks John......You always came across as a serious academic on Time Team.......How wrong we were.......A fitting tribute and an enjoyable liasten. Thank you very much for the time and effort
John, if you are reading this, you all rock. I absolutely love you and time team. You should have over a million views, all with thumbs up.
Love these lectures but I wish I could have seen what everybody was laughing at.
John really has a great sense of humor.
He's such a good geophis that he found a big blob when he geophised himself ^^
John always manages to do a roast of time team hosted by channel 4. I can honestly say every single cast member on that show was my favorite for different reasons.
Anyone else think that John's been waiting 20 years to throw all that shade?
John Gater second job is
Stand Up comedian!!!
Who knew back then?
John Gater you are great!!!
❤️🙏❤️
Ya look like a million bucks beloved geofizz trailblazer!! Glad to see you never stopped doing what you love. And thanks for this as well.
He is so brilliantly hilarious!
John is absolutely hilarious 😂
Thank you.. TT is such a joy..
Very enjoyable, thanks for that.
Agreed, these lectures are clearly great, but also agree that they should be afforded much better recording in all departments; 'video' resolution, sound, someone, preferably 2 people, manning the camera(s). But otherwise fantastic, and thanks for allowing us to see them for free.
Wonderful....always so straight laced....now you're letting your hair down (metaphorically speaking)
loved you'r presentation...wish that I could have been there....
There are two UA-cam channels I immediately watch new videos, this one and C&Rsenal.
We love you
More than you will ever know
Is there a easily accessible book (or other source) on the early history of geophysics?
I would love to see the evolution of the various techniques
www.amazon.co.uk/Seeing-Beneath-Soil-Prospecting-Archaeology/dp/0415214408/ The author, Tony Clark, appears in this video at around 8 minutes.
Suggestion: post a split screen to show the slides thst John's referring to or (GASP!) have someone actually manning the camera!
Ah, you did adjust the camera...thanks!!
Or gasp go volunteer your time after covid flattens and be the solution you want to see ;)
Brilliant
Who knew John was so funny!
"You bastards!" :-)
lol....i made Francis Pryors chimney hat lol....i forgot about that. :D
Go, GeoPhysics, Go! What fun you have!!🙂
4:35 Finally
But...did they ever find a burnt-out Cortina?
Hat a tease. 55days to up load!
What was with the camera angle?
Great talk, let down by bad sound, appalling camera work, malfunctioning slide presentation, and too much light in the room. The same is true of some of the other talks. Brilliant professionals, let down by amateurishness! If they ever do this sort of thing again, I hope Dignation learn the lessons.
At least there wasn't people constantly walking in front of the projector like what happened with some of the other guest speakers.
I had to dis like this as someone obviously fell asleep at the camera!!
4:35 fixed
It's a great lecture yet you gave it a thumbs down just because the camera wasn't to your liking, that's sad.
I may be one of the few people who agree with mick in the fact that you have to remove the surface soil to get an idea of what is below, just like taking the lid of the buiscit tin to get a look of what it's holding we wasn't there at the time it was closed so we need to get inside and look or get a better clue of what it's hiding the ast amount of life in the early years didn't have metals to use and so humans existed for millennium with oly use of clay, wood, rocks all of which the metal detector cannot see so it's all down to look and feel of finds, Howard carter's descovery wouldn't have been found with the metal detector even though the amount of gold in his find was priceless.
The thing is that geophys also detects burning and that is vital for older settlements. I think archeologists tend to treat geophys like a bit of a joke because it's a very inaccurate science based on guesswork and hunches but if anything, that's because you get too many potential results instead of none. If you've watched dozens of Time Team episodes, you quickly see they never find something where geophys saw absolutely nothing except an occasional shard of a pot.
Gater for president :)
Plunge pool!
Damn Gater is so goddamn funny. Loved this so much!
Gater HATES the word GEOFIZZ, of course
What a disappointment. Where are the slides that John is describing? Might as well be a podcast.
Again with the audio..FFS! You guys can do better than this.
You need a mic on the presenter, a video and audio feed from the laptop so you can cut to a better picture. I've worked on conferences like this: ua-cam.com/video/w5Ps-qc-1EQ/v-deo.html. All done with volunteers and we streamed them live on the net.
Normally they do mic the presenter.
Poor quality video :(
What a stupid camera position, completely spoilt the video
you're welcome
