One of the greatest races ever. And Pat Day was the only one of the three jockeys at the finish who didn't go to the whip, hand riding the horse to the win.

When the connections know they are going to win the race weeks in advance, they rarely need to go to the whip....

Don’t know what Rich Brake meant. But obviously the best horse won …. On the track and in the breeding shed. Wild Again didn’t need the whip he was going as fast as he could and Pat knew that

Yes! To think Wild Again ran the fractions and led from the start of the backstretch, then would not be passed, is quite impressive. Durkin's call was also great, IMO. Find the video of P. Day talking about this race and how W-A fought to stay in front. Races like this is what makes thoroughbred racing so exciting.

Pat ...After that race I followed your career until you retired. In my book, you are the best jockey ever!
My sister is an artist in FL and has become so inspired with your story of redemption and the Big Win on the Biggest Day of horse racing (she only saw the race replay a few months ago!) that she is doing 2 paintings of that race. One is titled "What A Finish!" and the other is of you on Wild Again as the winner that you both are-any suggestions on its title?

Good afternoon Dr. Caudill. I´m not Pat Day. I´m just a fan of a great jockey and I quoted a phrase which he said. Respect a title of the other painting, well, one could be "The Ride of my Life" or "Thank´s God for every win" in order to Day´s religious faith. According Wikipedia, he has been involved with the "Race Track Chaplaincy of America" since his conversion, and is currently the racing´s industry representative on the board of this organization. Greetings from Venezuela.

22, 45, 1:10, being pressed the entire way. Wild Again showed so much heart in this race.
To put the effort in some context, the two speed horses who battled with Wild Again, Precisionist, and Mugatee, finished last, and second to last in this race, both beaten by double digit lengths.

That's my horse's grandsire on her mother's side. I see this is where she gets her dark colour. It's amazing how similar she is to specifically this one. I don't have any pictures of her mother but I have photos posed just like pictures they have of wild again. Like the one with the dog. Kind expressions. Very similar gait. Same height. 15.3. Wonderful things come in small packages.
I had no idea he was alive when I got her. I would've tried to make a visit out to see him. (her sire sadly passed away many years ago)

In those early Breeders' Cup, nobody knew that 2, 3 or 4 very longshots would pop up in each Breeder's Cup day. Here In the very first Classic, Angel Cordero Jr, who was the rider on the huge favorite in the middle of the threesome, really got his stunning Waterloo of his very successful career.

No WILD AGAIN did not come out. . He was herded five feet into the rail by Slew o Gold. Then by Gate Dancer . Slew o gold who was a huge horse hit him so hard in the rear that he fishtailed and almost went down. The stewards said of Slew had won he was coming down .

I watched the overhead film of the race Wild again never came out he stayed in his lane the entire stretch run the 15 minute inquiry revealed Gate Dancer moved in on slew of gold causing the whole issue Gate dancers ears were stuffed with cotton and he wore the hood to try and keep this very thing from happening and he was always a wild ride down the stretch, Wild Again had the biggest heart of any horse I ever had the pleasure to sit upon I was his exercise rider

Watching this race carefully with years of watching races under my belt as opposed to when this race happened, I was a teen then, Cordero, aboard Slew o’ Gold didn’t respect Wild Again. Off the turn Cordero turns and looks over his shoulder concerned about Gate Dancer. A few strides later you observe Cordero again look over at Gate Dancer. Only problem was, Cordero hadn’t put away the horse on his inside yet. He’d end up losing to both of them at the wire.
