Black River & Western 60: Flemington's Freight Flyer

To celebrate 60's final full year of service before receiving its federally mandated 1472-day inspection, the Black River & Western Railroad hosted a photo charter with 2-8-0 steam locomotive number 60. For this event, the railroad altered 60's appearance to the paint scheme it first received 50 years ago in 1972. In addition to the new look, 60 pulled a very attractive 5 car freight train featuring two Pennsylvania Railroad hoppers, a Pennsylvania Railroad flatcar, a Reading Company flatcar, and an Erie caboose. Additionally, a Central Railroad of New Jersey combine was used to carry participants to each location and made an appearance on the last runby at each location. 60 also wore a special whistle for the charter, an authentic Grand Trunk Western 6 Chime from U-3-b Northern number 6323, the last steam locomotive to operate on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad.
As a nice surprise, many locations featured a wonderfully staged scene with period-correct actors. Additionally, two scenes featured vintage automobiles from the 1950s and 1960s, including a 1965 Ford Thunderbird, a 1951 Chevy Truck, and a 1966 Dodge Dart.
The charter could not have taken place on a better day with beautiful clear blue skies and temperatures in the mid 50s allowing for a great show of smoke and steam.
