Michael, GIMP, in their latest article has mentioned how to download and use to the development version of GIMP. I think you should make a video on it explaining normal users to test early GIMP 3 in order to create more stable version of GIMP. Basically, it's how Blender users motivate thier audience to use Beta and Alpha version by which it helps makes stable version more stable.

Great tutorial! Do you have any videos that go over the interpolation methods? You chose "NoHalo" and I always wondered how to choose the right method. Additionally, what is the best way to determine if GIF or PNG is appropriate? Right now, I use "shadows" as a determining factor. If I'm saving a graphic with alpha transparency and a drop shadow, I'll use PNG. Otherwise, I've found GIF files to almost always be smaller than PNG files, when the graphic contains up to 256 colors. Thanks for posting!

One of the main reasons to use PNG (or GIF) on text or other images with sharp details is to avoid JPEG compression artefacts (smudgy edges that can look like ripples).

Chroma subsampling doesn't reduce the number of colours. It reduces the high frequency colour information (colour sharpness).

That was contrary to what I thought. I always thought png files were better because jpgs get artifacts in them when they're shared and reshared. I could be wrong or that could have changed, I guess.

You aren't necessarily wrong about PNG's producing better quality than JPEGs. The issue isn't the quality, it's the size when uploading to the web. If you upload large images to a website, for example, your website will be drastically slower than if you compress the image to a file format such as a JPEG. So, if you are trying to preserve the full quality of your image to share directly to someone else, this tutorial does not apply.

@@DaviesMediaDesign Yeah, I guess I was thinking of it from a social media stand point. Definitely a helpful video, as always. I appreciate the content you create.

PNG is better than jpeg because the hosting site will compress your images even further thus creating artifacts in jpeg images. Not in PNG. That's what I've learned.

why dont you use gif for the icon? I mean it is an icon and doesnt have any gradient or details, like transparent shadows or stuff like that, I think the file size would be even smaller, if we talk about icons, and plain colors ofcourse

Probably has anti-aliasing, which can get real ugly in GIF.

I'm afraid you've made a major error regarding image sizing. These days, most "devices", and many (laptop) computers use "double-resolution" displays (like Apple's "Retina"). All Web images should be double the final "pixel" size desired. Use the HTML to reduce the size back to the desired (50%) size based on "standard" pixels. Sites that don't do this usually look like garbage to me...especially if I've just been looking at images that use the full double-res.

I disagree for one main reason - not all internet connections are the same. So, if you are hosting an image on your website, for example, and someone from a country with a slower internet connection tries to visit your website, it's going to take forever for the web page and the images on the web page to load. There are ways to keep this from happening, though these methods mostly deal with visitors AFTER their first initial visit (i.e. caching or CDNs), but on that first visit the website will be extremely slow for the visitor, thus causing the visitor to give up and visit a different, faster website. I don't disagree that the overall quality can be made better with choices such as the one you have described in your comment, but then you are increasing overall file size. This tutorial is about the balance between quality and file size for the sake of web performance.

@@DaviesMediaDesign Yes...I should've added one more point. I find that even if you maintain an identical file size, the double-res lower-quality-setting image will look better. Then you can decide if, and how much, you want to increase filesize to make it better yet.
