Some people would have spent the video talking about the sad state of health care-not Nanny-you instead have compassion for those wanting for care and the caregivers-thank you for the reminder to keep love and compassion flowing in our world

I’m a retired RN who worked 42 years in a major medical center in NYC. I can appreciate what you must have felt the other day. I’ve noticed the “people skills” have changed tremendously over the years; especially with the younger generation in the nursing field. 1 out of 5 cares. If even. It’s become a career for them. Also how much money & how fast they can become an administrator. They don’t want to get their hands dirty doing patient care. The compassion seems to be lost now. It bothered me when I saw it with my own parents care 6 years ago. When I became an RN in 1976, I was taught care and compassion along with the pathophysiology. I remember the words spoken to my graduating class by our college professor. He said “Nursing is not about how fast you can climb the corporate latter. It’s about compassion as well as taking the knowledge base you’ve learned from your head & getting it into your hands.”
Seems even retired, I’ve never forgotten that statement made to us that day in May, 1976.

I graduated in 1975 with a BSN , I know of what you speak. I spent 43 yrs, as a Bedside nurse working critical care, dialysis, IV therapy, etc. I always treated patients the way I would want my family member or myself treated. They greatest compliment I can say is when one of my fellow colleagues said to me if I get sick I want you to take care of me.

After 45 years as a CNA and unit secretary, I've done my share of working along side RNs. I would say maybe 8 out of 10 were great nurses. Now I retired a year ago. But yes, those 2 out of 10 would do better in another field of work. I also saw first hand that the super smart students with high grades, have not always been the greatest nurses. Sadly, one bad nurse can give that patient a bad experience and then they feel that they don't want to ever go back to that hospital. You were very observant nanny. It's a hard emotionally draining job, and most hospital personnel try their best.

I too graduated around that time & it is so very sad how the profession has changed. I'm so happy that I experienced the true art of nursing & I feel so sorry for the profession today- they are working through so many challenges , all the while being so very short staffed.

In Health care as well and I agree! My daughter is currently in nursing school and I constantly remind her that the bad she sees should not be the norm and to let her light shine bright!!! She can not believe how others in nursing field are treating the sick! I can’t either. Disgusting!

I live in a small town in Tennessee, and can usually be seen quickly by my own PC. If not, urgent care is available fairly quickly. The emergency room at the local hospital does its best, but the wait can be long.

Mary Ellen, dear Nanny, This vlog of your observations in the emergency room was so well done, It was inspiring for us and a tribute to all the health care workers we depend on so much! Just this week, as a single senior, I spent 3.5 hrs in an Urgent Care, waiting to have my aching right wrist x-rayed. Thank God, no breakage but a serious sprain and the loss of the complete use of my right hand/wrist/arm for weeks to come. And, it brought me just the same admiration and respect for the healthcare personnel I came in contact with. Thank you Nanny for expressing your appreciation and mine so well. God bless you! After my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the emergency room, the attending doctor could not have been more kind when he broke the news to us.
However, the oncologist that we were sent to a few weeks later was so abrupt and actually told us that we were taking up too much of her time and she had other patients to attend to. When she left us waiting in the exam room, my husband and I were so distraught we both teared up. Needless to say, we transferred to another doctor who was very kind and understanding. Sadly my husband passed 8 months after his diagnosis. That was almost 5 years ago.

Hello from Toronto, Canada. I recently lost my husband. About a month ago i suddenly lost my vision. I had a detached retina a few years ago and was worried it happened again. I called uber my vision came back on the Way to hospital. I was seen right away and they determined it was an ocular migraine. What a relief. The doctor was concerned i was dealing with this alone but I was calm but terrified. Tough being old but staff were wonderful.

Very interesting, your ER observations. In my opinion the most glaring issue here is that a person with Moose's age and history can't get an appointment with his primary care physician sooner than 6 weeks and is told to go sit in an ER for several hours only to be sent back to the pcp. I assume the appointment is still going to be March 31st. In fact, from your description of the other patients, it sounds like there weren't any actual emergencies, just people seeking healthcare. The healthcare system in this country is broken and has been for a long time. I am a retired critical care nurse, and I don't know how to fix it, but this much I do know: it all comes down to money. The bisque looked delicious.

No fault of healthcare workers so much but they are so over loaded and ER is so busy ! People get upset and become upset easily and to try and calm them is her job ! You can stay in the halls at an ER for hours sometimes actually days if no beds ! Sorry for ur 5 hr experience!

Good morning Nanny. My 38 year old daughter has been an ER nurse for 15 years. She has tried to move to other areas of health care, Heart valve research, fixed flight wing nursing, bedside nursing. Each and every time she has gone back to the ER. Yes she likes the fast pace of the ER and she loves helping people in need. Some of the stories she has told me are heartbreaking. Note our ER's here in the states are overloaded with DRUG and MENTAL HEALTH people, so sad. From the young to the elderly she cares deeply for her patients she is one of those caring calm souls who can calm most people down, especially the elderly. She has mentioned from time to time how a nurse will come in and just not a good fit for ER. The trauma and drama is too much for them or they don't have the compassion. However I can say I am so proud of her for the work she does and the loving care she gives her patients. COVID was especially hard, people had to wait so long to be seem, it was sad. At times the abuse from patients was overwhelming to her and her coworkers yet most hung in there. At one point she said she was so tired of seeing people die. Many nurses left to be travel nurses because of the $$$$$ they could make, my daughter didn't she chose to stay and help her hospital. For that I am thankful and proud of her. I myself have been in the ER a couple of times i the last 3 years and it isn't easy however I have a different point of view on the whole experience. I've had Drs and nurses read my last name which is not a normal name and they have ask me if my daughter is a nurse and they have worked with her and shared with me how wonderful she is. Drs have even written her letters of recommendation at times when she has changed jobs. Once again I must say how proud I am of the carrier my daughter chose. I ask people to be patient with ER staff please, they want you diagnosed and out as much as you do. Thanks Nanny for giving us your outlook on the healthcare workers. Blessing to you from Texas.

Oh bless you both for enduring and being patient in the ER. Over the past 3 years I have accompanied many trips to the ER with my mom, now deceased stepfather , my husband ….I have taken myself ( alone) for broken ankle and ribs…what’s bad about taking yourself is you can’t be given anything stronger than Motrin as you have to drive yourself home …definitely harder for those who live alone or don’t have anyone available to take us. And most definitely if x-rays needed right away the ER is generally the only place you can go …seeing your doctor in their office won’t help as they usually can’t do scans, labs etc and then your care is just delayed. I feel for Moose, I have a replaced hip and have AVN in the other hip and have had my share of falls in the garden…there is always that scare that one has about dislocation of the artificial hip and must be tended to immediately. I pray that treatment from his Ortho and GP will be done promptly. Your bisque looked delicious..I am going to try it soon for my husband, I’m not a seafood lover but I know he’d enjoy. God bless you both…you are such a thoughtful beautiful lady Nanny.

Well, they have actual police officers permanently stationed in the ER in Hong Kong. The security guards don't do anything at all. I've seen people in professional kitchen attire with lots (LOTS!) of gauze around their hand and lots of blood MORE THAN ONCE. (I guess those are knife accidents.) There usually is someone with a feverish baby. I've also seen the cops bring people in CHAINS in. Everyone is very downcast, waiting for hours and hours. I think it's much longer than in the US. No one will be comforting and warm. In fact, a triage nurse once mocked me and said "You feel like you're going to die?" I was practically on the floor in pain. I once saw someone actually collapse across the triage nurse's desk. They carted her off to the back. No water source is available. However, if you came in with chest pain, you will have electrodes slapped on in about 15 minutes for an EKG. They will draw blood to check for troponin. If those are both normal, they will send you home with Panadol (aka Tylenol). No referral in that case. If you are admitted before a major holiday falling inconveniently close to a weekend, you will be kept on an IV with only 1500 ml of water per day, with no water or food allowed by mouth, just in case you might need surgery, but no doctor with see you for 5 or 6 days. You also can't get CT, ultrasound or anything but simple blood tests on holidays or Sunday. If you chose NOT to go to the ER, you have to wait between six months and five years to see a doctor, get a CT, ultrasound or MRI, depending on how booked up a particular specialty is. There are no GPs except in the private sector. So, idk, are you glad you're in the US? Wait, we do have one amazing perk! Ambulances are FREE. They also have two paramedics and a driver. As I recall, in the US, the driver had to also lift and lug patients. Is that correct? Regarding the priority of seeing patients, i.e. triage, there is a protocol for that. I know for a fact that in Hong Kong you will be triaged semi urgent if you have a head injury but report that you did NOT lose consciousness. Semi urgent is everything except an insect bite. You are not seeing a doctor anytime soon. I expect they also have a triage protocol in the US.

So many people suffering and waiting for five or six hours for a doctor. For me it’s so upsetting and sad… I thank God that till now I am ok, and all the little things that I had or have even Covid I could take care by my myself and my doctor at home. The health care hospitals or urgency are chaotic ,there are not enough doctors and nurses so at certain point make me fear. Not only Portugal but England, France etc have the same problem. Thanks God it’s all ok with Moose. I loved your bisque, easy to do and very good in a cold day as we have here. I Hope that Moose is going better. God bless you two. Love you.

I unfortunately have spent my fair share of time in the Emergency Room between my husbands health and my own. All the Hospital personnel I have meet have been kind and supportive. I know I couldn’t do their job. Sometimes I feel that they are as flustered as we are by the long waits and the lack of personnel.

    Hello Nanny,
We are in our mid 70's...I'm almost afraid to say...we have been fortunate so far.
If you can believe ...raising 3 active boys in the country..falling out of trees, bicycle crashes and all the things kids do...no broken bones. I think we had 4 ER trips for stitches, X-rays etc. That's been a long time ago. The ER's were busy and the wait time could be awhile but nothing like it is today. The health care system has definitely changed. It is getting harder to get into family physicians in a timely manner so seems like people are being forced into ER's. We have so many Urgent Care facilities here but you almost have to have an appointment or be prepared to wait hours to get into one. My DIL is at one waiting as I write. It is rather scary to grow older and not know if we would get help quick enough in a life threatening emergency. It was a very positive way to wait as you did observing the different issues. I know In most instances everyone providing treatment is doing the best they can and the waiting is unfortunate. It is frustrating for them as well. I admire their desire to be in health care. It has to be a very stressful work to deal with pain and suffering day after day. Bless all those who help.
As you mentioned growing the watercress...it sounds much growing bean sprouts.
Your bisque looked delicious. You are quite the cook!
I hope Moosey is ok and will get some relief when you see the doctor.
    God bless....J💕

I’ve used urgent care twice. The longest I’ve had to wait was probably 30 minutes. The second time it was determined that I needed to go to the hospital and so they transported me and I guess when you arrive in an ambulance you get much faster service than walk-ins. I highly recommend urgent care unless you have a reoccurring issue that you know requires a hospital.

So sorry to hear that Moose is going through so much pain, and hopefully the specialist will be able to help him soon. Like every other mother I’ve been through the ER chaos many times and am now dealing with it occasionally while taking some of my elderly friends there. Presently it’s usually at least a 12 hour wait after check in before being attended to, and in the last case that was with a friend that was having chest pains!! We definitely have an overload on our healthcare and the hospitals are struggling with whatever resources they have available…..but very disturbing. You are so right about how difficult and frightening it can be when you are at the point where you realize that you must get to the ER and are all alone….Moose is so lucky to have you with him. On a brighter note….your bisque looked absolutely yummy and once again you had me salivating just watching you make it. Hugs to both of you.😘🤗

So sorry for the painful exhaustive wait before health care. Please continue follow up with those xrays. My elderly family member was told no fracture appeared on xray. Perhaps the fragility of age or unobserved hairline fx caused definite fracture the following week. The patient denied a fall, but couldn’t walk a week later. We called ambulance and our beloved was showing g a definite hip fracture only one week later. It’s possible that a hairline fx can broaden with turning over in bed. So please follow up if pain continues or if he can’t walk as his usual. These extended wait times are just poor health services. These places are reviewed by accreditors & need sanctions imposed for poor services. Patient endangerment may result due to delayed care or irate customers that get rough. Thus the need for security guards. God bless us all!❤❤❤

No way I can ever get into see my doctor fast - that's why I need to leave her behind. I was in the emergency room in CO a week ago for breathing and stomach issues and the care was A+. No waiting, fast diagnosis. The ED doctor had to call my doctor and tell her to see me the next day! The medical system is broken.

It seems like every doctor including mine, my husbands and my elderly parents doctor take about a month to see for an appointment. Even our dogs vet!! I think they just keep taking new patients to pay off medical loans, etc. It’s not like the old days when your md had time allotted for working in their flu, etc. patients. The system doesn’t work well now. If you go into the hospital for a heart attack, the doctor on duty sees you, not your doctor who knows you and your history. Sad.

I ended up in the ER with a kidney stone - my friend showed up for support. It was horrific. The police brought in a homeless drunk man who was shouting filthy words and he smelled horrible. We were placed in a hallway as I came in by ambulance. They put the man in a locked clear holding room and he urinated all over the room. I just wanted out of there, but like you was stuck there for 5 hours listening to this man. God bless our nurses - they were dealing with him too. Our health system really is broken - here in Indiana you have to wait weeks to get in to see a doctor also.

It is the same in Tulsa. When either of us needs to see the Doc for a sudden illness or due to acute symptoms it is a wait to see our primary docs. We often use Emergent Care connected to our physicians’ practice groups. It is also not unusual to be diverted to a physician’s assistant when the physician is booked in advance. Sitting in an Emergent Care setting is much the same here. Our grandson is a third year med student. I know he will be one of the caring patient and very competent physicians. We need more like him in the medical field. Sending healing prayers for Moosie and you too❣️

I am a retired RN. Health care is in free fall. Many factors. Sadly, I see it getting worse. I had to get a new doctor after mine retired. Nine months to get to meet him for the Medicare “well “ visit. Months to see any specialist. Several hours wait in urgent care. Days in the ER to get a bed because there are no rehab beds or dialysis centers to take care of those folks. I fear government assisted suicide like they have in Canada is coming. Especially for we older folks.

So happy to see you this morning!. Beautiful day in Nebraska. Sunny and 37 degrees. Enjoyed your video. Yes, it takes special people to be working in health care. My journey with the "system" started in November. I was just telling a friend of the kindness I have felt going for my treatments. From the 1st day looking for the elevator and having a nice young nurse that was leaving for the day stop and insist on walking me to the elevator. I am amazed and I have to say that my attitude has improved and am trying to pass kindness on.
So happy Moose has no fractures and will be on the mend soon. Boy that bisque looks great!!! Stay well! Hugs ❤️

And different people can deal best with certain patients so it truly takes all kinds! Thanks for all your empathetic observations.
The soup looked terrific! And by the way, you look very elegant in that black sweater - I think that color is what makes your hair look so pearly white.

@Nanny Your narrative about your hospital visit reminds me of the time I fell and broke my wrist and also dislocated my shoulder. A double whammy! I called an ambulance because hubby was out-of-town. The ambulance team was so kind and helpful. I was triaged and placed in the hallway at the hospital because there were many people in cue. It was the ambulance staff who hung around and checked on me. They offered to give me a shot of something to ease my pain. I accepted their gracious assistance and was able to relax deeply, even dozing off, until I could get into the x-ray room and get help with my wrist/shoulder pain. Interesting that I was so relaxed that my shoulder slipped back into its socket while waiting and dozing off! I hear people complaining about ambulance fees, but my fee seemed reasonable and worth every cent because they were so professional and caring!😊👍

I worked my way through college at the local hospital, and sometimes wound up on emergency room duty. An interesting place, especially if you are into human behavior. Also have done my share of taking others to the emergency room, and in recent years a couple of visits myself. An excellent place for people watching. I once had to encourage and accompany a friend to the Mayo clinic. She was afraid to go. I explained to her that there would be some of the best people watching in the waiting room in the whole country. You never know who might be there. Anyway, your experience made me reminisce about days gone by. I love your seafood/shrimp bisque hack recipe using store bought soup base and embellishing with spicy shrimp, etc. Made me think of Mardi Gras, which is just around the corner. Today's the big game, but will just be tuning in for the halftime show (maybe) I'm hooked on masterpiece theater Miss Scarlet, season finale tonight. I've turned into my mother I guess. Take care and see you in the next video. MJ♥️💌

I am so sorry that Moose had another event with his health. The ER is a very unpleasant experience. You are suffering or you would not be there. The wait is always an endurance test. You see people who your heart goes out to and others who you think should pull themselves together. Everyone reacts differently and it is a place to observe while you wait for hours. I will only go as a last resort. Consequently, I am trying not to show how much pain I am in. I know that other people are watching. Sometimes it is unbearable just to sit up and you try to think of a way to endure the wait. The wait to be seen by our own doctors is becoming longer. What do we do in the meantime? I did find that the urgent care will do a tele visit. But not until many hours later. However, at least you can wait in your own bed. Being totally alone when not feeling well is something that I find the hardest. It can be frightening at times. The medical profession is getting overwhelmed. I often feel like a number in a long line. I finally saw the special surgeon for my eyes. She was abrupt and uncaring. How could I possibly feel comfortable going into surgery with her? I don’t know how to find a surgeon who specializes in this particular kind of surgery. Then I found out that I need a certain medication that I cannot afford the co- pay for. I don’t know where to turn. I think that watercress needs to be soaking wet at all times. Please let your family and friends know that the Nova virus is going around. I came down with it after riding in the rideshare to and from the doctor. So it was either the office or the cars where I contacted it. Hand sanitizer is NOT effective in avoiding infection. Only lots of soap and water. It is the hardest on babies and the elderly. Happy Valentine’s Day Nanny and Moose. I hope that Moose gets some relief from the pain and you make it a good day. 💕💘💝Blessings to you both, love, Sharon
