Hi guys. I have had the B&W 702 s3 since december 2022. Had the Hegel H190 paired and allways hade the feeling that something was missing. Bought the Michi X5 Series 2. My God. I Know. Big difference in power but how the higher notes just eased out from beeing harsh and how much more base is coming out is tremendous. Now I am longing home to my listening room every day instead of trying to find excuses not to listen.

Great review, thanks for sharing... Would it be worth going up to the Michi X5 which offers more power than the Hegel H590 and is like half the price? Or is the X3 literally a very nice sweet spot to start with for some good floor standing reference grade speakers? And is the Hegel sound warmer or as neutral as the Michi's?

X3 is plenty for most people, unless you have a larger room or very power hungry speakers that would be my choice. Or if you just want the larger more power X5 amplifier just because that's fine too lol

Your review was great! Give one a better comparison than most other reviews. However, when reviewing an integrated with phono and DAC, it should be important to review these features as it is a big part of the cost and value decision to get either full featured or basic amp.

@colin5577 I would love to hear your findings on the different amps you have been trying, including the Michi range. I am on a similar upgrade path, replacing a very decent all-in-one Gold Note IS-1000 with something more powerful than the 125wpc it offers. Been looking at Accuphase, Hegel, NAD M33, and Michi. Unfortunately, due to my location I can only audition easily the NAD M33. Thanks in advance!

Colin, can you please share your impressions. I cannot get any meaningful demo where I live.

    • @colin5577
      @colin5577 Рік тому +6

@@sapkan7879 Sure. It’s highly, highly subjective, but what I have found is as follows. Firstly, the amps have all been tried using Bowers and Wilkins 804 D4s and D5s. I slightly preferred the D5s, but bought the D4s because I got a great deal on them, they look nicer, work better in my room and create a much bigger, beefier soundscape than the D5s, even if it’s slightly less sparkly and well balanced. I also tried ProAc K1s and have nothing bad to say about those… they’re better than the B&Ws in some respects IMO.
      Amps?
Michi… huge disappointment. Both X3 and X5. I really wanted one of these to be my amp. They were both on a great special offer and I think they look great. Neither sounded in any way special to me. Flat, boring sound that wasn’t well refined. I didn’t think they did well in the upper, mid or low ranges and I couldn’t find anything they did well enough to stop me dismissing them both.
Hegel… better than the Michi, but again… I found its performance uninspiring. Just meh.
Macintosh…. I had a good go at the MA352. It looks incredible, there was an ex-demo unit that I could have had at a knock down price, Macintosh have a great name and I would have been thrilled to have had one driving my speakers with all of its lovely chrome and valves. But…. I thought it sounded hopeless. Fantastic bass, so-so mid range performance and hopelessly messy and unresolved top mid and top end. Every now and again, it was brilliant, but mostly it sounded a bit pants. I was gutted.
Naim? I bought a Mu-so (brilliant) and am getting an NDX2 for streaming (best I can afford at the minute), so love Naim gear, but didn’t try any of their high end amps. I couldn’t find any to try and those amp products that I did try in the Atom and Unity weren’t great.
Burmester… the 032 is amazing. Lovely, lovely, lovely amp. Utterly brilliant. But expensive. I didn’t try the 082 as it probably isn’t up to driving 804 D4s.
Accuphase. I’m not even that super keen on how they look, but Jesus…. They punch way, way, way above their weight. I don’t know what they do in their lab as they make and test these things, but… for what they cost… to me anyway… they’re fantastic. Not perfect, but close enough for what I’m willing to spend. I had thought I’d get away with an E-380, but they had to work too hard to drive the 804s, so I had to go for an E4000. I didn’t want to buy an Accuphase particularly, but after 20-30 hours of listening to everything I could find in the £6,000-£15,000 range, Accuphase’s E380 and E4000 were the best equipment I listened to next to Burmester’s 032 and Gryphon’s Diablo 300. I thought the E4000 was almost on a par with the Burmester, but the E4000 is new and that 032 has been out for 10 years…I didn’t fancy blowing £15k on something overdue an update. The Gryphon was great, but I thought the Accuphase was more musical and made a nicer noise, even if it made less of it. At £9,000 the E4000 was a no brainier for me. It’s amazing. Again… I tried everything NOT to buy an Accuphase and went back 5 or 6 times to try an Accuphase next to something else. For me, it beat all comers time and time again. So it’s a retro champagne coloured box for me. 😑 There is genuine magic dust in it somewhere, though.
Edited to add… I did try some other bits along the way. A Dan D’Agostino amp here, B&W 804 D1s and some 700s there, Macintosh mono amps etc etc etc… but kept my comments to things I was actually considering buying and could afford. This stuff is MENTALLY expensive. Cables and power supplies alone could cost me well over £5k. So I listened to a lot of different stuff and spent a lot of time in studios testing my music, none of which was deranging jazz or a cigarette voiced lounge singer with a guitar. Lots of electronica, cinema scores, classical, metal, rock, pop etc… the equipment got properly worked out.

At least you mentioned a MC SUT (moving coil step up transformer). MC SUT’s are not a dirty little secret. 🤫 They have the ability to not only raise the gain of an MC cartridge to suit MM input levels, but they also lower the noise far lower than all but the most expensive MC preamps, while also expanding the soundstage and relaxing the treble without losing detail. Not magic, just the result of a much lower noise floor. Transformers are passive and dead silent. High gain transistors at the microvolt level most assuredly are not. Especially when they are in the company of a high powered amp and huge power supply. They are little boxes with four jacks and no power supply. Even McIntosh saw the light where on their higher end phono stages, they use a MC SUT on their MC input. Excellent SUTs are available for a couple hundred bucks from companies such as K&K to name one. Just call the SUT manufacturer and make sure it’s a good match for your chosen MC cartridge.

Amplifier reviews are pointless, you cannot say what an amp sounds like unless there is only one speaker in the world, amplifiers will sound different depending on what speaker is on the end of it, there are thousands of speakers out there, with thousands of different impedance, drivers and crossovers, therefore there is no standard, unless an amplifier is designed to pair with a specific pair of speakers then you are gambling your money. When a car is built, the designer puts in an engine that will work with the car, they don’t sell you an engine and then tell you to go find a car elsewhere until you find the one that works well with it, that would be nonsense. So, if you want to get the best from any amplifier, buy active speakers, they will have been designed to work together properly. Any stand alone amplifier can only work well with whatever speakers the designer used to listen to it with, and since there are thousands of different designs out there, chances of it matching is remote!

With any integrated you can expect corners to be cut in various places like in the DAC but at this price point the mediocre phono stage sticks out like a sore thumb. Either do it right or leave it out during the design phase. Throw in a second set of balanced inputs.

Have compared the X5 to the h390 Denon pma 2500ne and rotel 1592.
The Hegel H390 was clearly the better amp. My friend who owned the X5 was quite stunned by the difference. He had both amps at home for a while to test them to.
As you says in the end x3 is for audiophiles who don't know what they want. My advice is save your money till you know or could test. The x3 is overpriced.

@@SlicedBread1001 Sighted tests done after researching, watching reviews/opinions, and then spending your money can certainly make it seem so. I won't discount that. When you want to find miniscule changes, you may find them. But when it comes to the little testing that has been done in a more controlled environment, there are no notable differences. If the amp has a low output impedance, high input impedance, low distortion and noise, it will sound the same as others with those qualities. Also had listened to Marantz gear with B&W 6's bookshelf speakers... I know Marantz gear from other systems but this experience was horrible, harsh, unlistenable for me. Worst of all, piano had an dry, iron-ish sound on both systems. Not for me at all and I think totaly untrue to natural sound, tonality, timbre of instrumets. I listened jazz on both systems. Maybe are B&W OK for home cinema, for stereo not at all for my taste. So becuse I disliked this speakers so much, I can not comment on Michi and I am sorry for that.

Both amplifiers are abysmal audio quality including poor circuit quality design compared to the best of the 90,s amplifiers, never mind we are in 2022. Rotel has also poor substandard signal seperatation for just one thing never mind the rest, and the hegal is also a poor quality substandard design that also suffers from distortion artifacts. These two companies amplifiers have totally abysmal amplifiers and circuitry and sound quality performance to say we are in 2022. Expensive audio rubbish is what they both are. Wouldn't touch either of these companies with a barge pole, and would not waste hard earned money on either companies products. Neither do they have any sort of musical reproduction that offer any resemblance to any realistic sound rendering of true natural realistic sound quality. A lot of Audio companies today in 2022 need a reality check for the expensive audio rubbish that comes from their audio facilities, which in my eyes is totally unacceptable to say we are in 2022, that might have been acceptable in the 90's for even some of the top audio electronics companies, but we are not in the 90's we are in 2022, in my eyes this is disgusting to say the least. Reviews and reviewers need their heads shaken up quite a lot, because a large majority of audio components and companies are still just pure junk today.
