- According to a statement released by Australian broadcaster Network 10, "MasterChef Australia" host Jock Zonfrillo died unexpectedly at age 46 on the eve of the show's new season.
According to the statement, the Scottish broadcaster died in Melbourne on Sunday, but no cause of death was given.
Zonfrillo joined the popular culinary competition in 2019, and was scheduled to co-host the premiere of the new season alongside guest judge Jamie Oliver.
According to Network 10's statement, the episode has been removed from air.
Zonfrillo, who was born in Glasgow in 1976, was trained by some of the most renowned chefs in the world.
His career in the kitchen began in the United Kingdom, where he worked in London for chef Marco Pierre White, whom he subsequently credited for saving his life.
According to his memoir "Last Shot," which was published last year, Zonfrillo experimented with heroin as a teen in Glasgow, and drug addiction followed him for years as he capitalised on his early success.
The description of the book states: "For years, he juggled a career as a rising star among legendary chefs with a crippling drug addiction that led him down many dark paths."
In 1999, Zonfrillo departed the United Kingdom and established himself in Australia as the executive chef of Restaurant 41 in Sydney. He then established his own fine dining establishment, Restaurant Orana, in Adelaide, which received culinary accolades in 2019 and 2020 prior to its closure.
He hosted a number of culinary programs, such as "Nomad Chef," which provided a glimpse into the cuisine of some of the world's most remote communities, as well as "Restaurant Revolution" and "Chef Exchange."
In 2016, he established The Orana Foundation, whose mission is to promote the qualities of Australia's Indigenous cuisine. And in 2018, he won the prestigious Basque Culinary World Prize for championing Indigenous culture and culinary traditions.
But perhaps his most prominent role was on the Australian series of "MasterChef," the wildly popular television program that has made him a ubiquitous name in the country in recent years.
Zonfrillo leaves behind his spouse Lauren Fried and four children.
In a statement posted by Network 10, Zonfrillo's family expressed their grief over his death.
"There are so many words that can be used to characterize him and so many stories that can be told about him, but we are currently too overwhelmed to put them into words. For those who crossed his path, became his companion, or were fortunate enough to be his family, bear this proud Scot in mind when you drink your next whisky."
The statement continued, "We humbly request that you allow us to grieve in private while we find a way to navigate this and find space on the other side to celebrate our irreplaceable husband, father, brother, son, and friend."
Oliver wrote on Facebook that he was in "total shock" to learn of Zonfrillo's passing.
"We had a wonderful experience working on this year's Master Chef... I am incredibly appreciative of Jock's generosity with his time and spirit during the performance. He penned.
"Jock is going to be sorely missed... I cannot believe I am writing this," he continued.
Gordon Ramsay, a fellow British celebrity chef, described Zonfrillo's demise as "devastating news."
"I thoroughly enjoyed our time together on MasterChef in Australia," he tweeted. In this difficult time, I'm sending my deepest condolences to Lauren and her family.

I had put into my diary, Sunday 7th May, simply. “Masterchef”. I’ll be in hospital after major surgery, and was looking forward to watching the first Episode for 2023. Not sure if TV NZ will delay this episode, wait and see.
Just a huge shock, for so many, especially his loving family. Thoughts also go out to Andy and Melissa.

Just another clickbait title, read by a 3rd world directed artificial voice. These channels will do anything for a few UA-cam cents. Zonfrillo was a troubled, not all together man and could be an utter pain in the ass. Sick of the media etc. sanctifying him like he's some kind of saint just because he's dead now. He sounded inspired as a chef, but really difficult and a bit of a trainwreck, although I understand he had a terminal cancer illness recently before he topped himself in Australia. Sorry for his 3rd wife and all his kids from various marriages though.

@@rochelimit55555 What I meant was, most of the season has already been filmed - most likely the entire season. It's just that the new season has not been aired on tv yet. So he passed on before it could be shown on tv - he did not pass away on an episode.
