Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan and you can definitely hear their influence but ELO’s sound for me is totally original and their use of the orchestra and choir had seldom been employed in rock music before. The Beatles and Procol Harem had used it but did not have musicians playing violin as part of their regular lineup. Jeff Lynne definitely sounds like John Lennon on Mister Kingdom which is something I just picked up on from watching this. To me the early and mid 70’s are arguably the most creative period in rock/pop music. This was just before disco (great for dancing but not much else) and punk rock sprung to the forefront and prog rock died it’s slow death. So many great bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, The Who and many others created their best music during that time. I Like the fact that you really listen to the music and don’t play YT videos along with the music which are often distracting. That is how music was made and meant to be listened to pre MTV. Strictly an audio experience where you let your imagination create the imagery. If you like the ELO sound, there are a lot of other great songs of their you will like. Check out Showdown, Evil Women, Fire on High and Strange Magic. 👍👍👍

Excellent comments about ELO and the music of the 70's. You pretty much encapsulated my thoughts on ELO and that fantastic era.
Fantastic review guys, Love this album. Favourites are Laredo Tornado and Nobody's Child. They both have a bluesy feel to them, and the strings are funky. Who knew strings could be funky??
Favourite ELO album for me is A New World Record. It sure lives up to its name.

Jeff Lynne actually can't read music. Louis Clarke (RIP) was bought in to both write the music nd conduct the orchestra used on Eldorado. (Louis is famous for the Hooked on Classics music) Jeff wrote the simple tune that he wanted and Louis then bought that to the orchestra.. This was an album that was very close to Jeff in that it was written for his dad who up to that point had criticized him for the songs. His dad liked this one! Sharon Arden (now Osbourne) designed the front cover as her father was ELO's manager (Don Arden).

When ELO was founded by Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood, they envisioned using an orchestra at some time in the future. It was not until Jeff's fifth album that he was able to hire a full orchestra and a choir to back his album “Eldorado”. He's a musical genius who can do it all!

27 years old producing this music. He was still living with his mum and dad when he did this album.
26 to be correct. Jeff Lynne Was born on Dec. 30th 1947.
I doubt he was still living with his parents since he was married and had been earning a decent living as a musician for about 10 years by 1974.
Thank you for reacting to the masterpiece that is ELOs Eldorado. The 1981 Time album is another concept ELO album that is very much overlooked in comparison to their other excellent work 😊

Almost every one of their albums is worth listening to over and over again. They were my very first favourite band and they still are to this day. I first got to know them as an 11 year old when 'New World Record' was released. I was obsessed with Livin' Thing and that remains my favourite song of all time. It was great to hear you run through this album.
I second guess a friendship that doesn't involve ELO
The big difference between ELO and the Beatles and other bands that used orchestras was that ELO brought the strings with them live. The Beatles admitted that they couldn’t do certain songs live. ELO had two cellos and a violinist who did a great job bringing the music to life. They still are a great live band. I saw them live in 1981 and again the next time they toured in 2018. Check out Jeff Lynne’s ELO Wembley or Bust. He didn’t have the 100 foot diameter UFO stage, but the sound was fantastic.

ELO live has been so much better than other Legendary Bands.
Some of the best live tours were the "face the music tour" its also on u tube called "fusion" and the "new world record tour" the out of blue tour was great the big space ship was cool but to me it got in the way of the magnificent 7 a awesome 7 pcs. Band ...ELO !

Oh no...not a patch on Eldorado or any of their first 6 albums.
Ok, so great respect to you for covering this album because I had almost forgotten how much I love it! You gave Lynne much kudos by noticing this was his 4th studio album, but this was his 4th studio album WITH ELO! He had previously been with the Idle Race and The Move before the ELO project even started!
I love "i can't get it out of my heah" which was their first big hit in the US, but "boy blue" is my fav and if i remember rightly it's Jeff Lynne's imaged back story of famous painting of the same name, the lyrics are well worth listening to, very clever storytelling.
Thank you for playing and reacting to I can say one of my 5 favorite albums ever. It goes everywhere with me. I guess you noticed but the choir and soloists in it provide a lot of atmosphere as in an early movie. On this album the orchestra plays a big part. Besides, the albumcover is a close up from thé scene in The Wizard Of Oz, where the witch is trying to take away Dorothy's red shoes.
I really enjoyed your attention to the detail. Nathan in particular, who picked up the very laidback horns on Nobody's Child for instance. He explained he is used to do remixes and these thing stand out then. It is an even nicer experience to let the music flow and not stop between songs. I get why you do that. As reactors you need the opportunity to give a reaction. You don't have a clue if tbe album will provide. The transitions between the songs though are a big part of the fun! Thanks guys, I really enjoyed your journey through Eldorado.
Jeff Lynne, a very gifted composer, has produced a great number of gorgeous ELO albums and also for others like George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and so on. The missed out Willburies are Jim Keltner and Bob Dylan. John Lennon once said when listening to this album, this could have been where the Beatles were headed towards if they hadn't split up.

Eldorado is mythical city of gold. Also a poem. ELO’s album covers were always fascinating to analyze.
Actually, El Dorado (meaning Man of Gold) was an (I think) Aztec annual custom where a nominated man was sprayed with gold dust through a reed after he had been covered with sticky tree resin. He would then jump into a lake, washing off the gold dust and symbolically freeing the other inhabitants from the consequences of their minor misdeeds.
if I could only recommend one Electric Light Orchestra album, it would be this one. They had bigger hits down the line but nothing else ever had this epic flow from beginning to end. First note to last.

Jeff Lynne's ELO Toured the US and Canada in the Summer of 2019. The Wembley Stadium Concert is on DVD, Bluray etc...Best Concert ever! I just bought it on Amazon.

Hats off to you guys for reviewing a full album. I’ve been a Jeff Lynne fan since 1975 and am amazed at his creativity from early days to today. He hasn’t used orchestration since the early 80s and was mainly producing others (Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Beatles Free as a Bird and Real Love and the Wilburys) but is back recording and touring with Jeff Lynnes ELO. Really enjoyed the video 👍👍👍

I'm a big ELO fan but haven't listened to this album very often and only just realised how amazing it is.
One of ELO's best albums. But you should listen to "Time" by ELO. That's a great album.

Very refreshing to hear a review from unacquainted listeners - i first went to an ELO concert some.....45 years ago as a teenager! From Eldorado onwards ELO albums have been 'concept' e.g. Out of the Blue, Time etc. Both the Beatles and Chuck Berry were big influences on Jeff and it shows. The production values on albums like Eldorado means that most of the tracks are seldom performed live as they require the input of too many people. I would thoroughly recommend their Glastonbury set from ca5 years ago with ensemble backing and session players. Richard Tandy is the only original left and in addition to normal duties does the electronic Sparky-type voiceovers e.g. Mr Blue Sky. Not to be sidelined was Kelly Groucutt who sadly died a few years ago but provided backing and sometimes lead vocals on certain tracks. I have been fortunate to see them in the UK many times before disbanding. I vividly remember their Out of the Blue tour where they entranced from a huge spaceship, the album logo, to a non-album track the stunning 'Daybreaker'. Throughout the titular set small remote versions of the spaceship were flying over the audience - before the days of drones! 3 large screens were erected behind them to set the mood for the album and memorable was footage of Humpback Whales breaching to The Whale track. When you thought that was it they did Wild West Hero c/w a Wild Bill clad character who emerged on stage.....on a White horse and proceeded to lassoo all the band individually..........they don't make gigs like that any more.
'Eldorado'... a great choice - follow this reaction up with 'Face The Music'... you can't go wrong!

Jeff Lynne was ELO, but Louis Clark arranged (and probably composed some) - especially on Eldorado. Clark's the guy who did "Hooked on Classics". But in the end - it's ALL Jeff Lynne, baby!! ;-)
Eldorado is an awesome album. Every song leads you to the next one. Probably their best album but there are many such as Time, Secret Messages, Out of the blue, even Discovery. Hell they set such a high standard anyway. Which or what is their worst album or lesser compared to the others. People have their own ideas. Discovery may not be their best album say for example but there are some good songs on that album. It seems a bit more cruisey like compared to other albums I feel and think.

Electric Light Orchestra was Roy Wood's brainchild in 1968, at that time Roy was writing hit records for The Move. The bands producer, Tony Visconti had added classical instrumentation to some of Roy's songs, so Roy thought wouldn't it be great to have a rock band with it's own integral orchestral section. Bands like The Beatles and The Moody Blues had used orchestral pieces in their songs too, but the classical players were session musicians who were paid for the hours that they worked. Roy's plan would cut out all those expensive session musicians, as the band members would be playing the orchestration.
Roy told Jeff Lynne of The Idle Race about his planned band and he wanted to join Roy in forming the Electric Light Orchestra. The Move were signed to EMI's Regal Zonophone label and The Idle Race were signed to United Artists Liberty label, so Jeff Lynne left The Idle Race and joined The Move in February 1970 so that both Roy and Jeff were signed to the same record company.
The first ELO song was originally recorded in July 1970 as a 'B' side to The Move's "When Alice Comes Back to the Farm", originally the song was about an escaped prisoner with the number 10538, that was the title of the song until one night Roy got out his cheap Chinese cello and added lots of overdubbed heavy rock cello riffs to Jeff's 10538, Jeff liked what Roy had done and he renamed the song "10538 Overture" and the Electric Light Orchestra was born.
Excellent reaction....like much like early Genesis, this is a very British album (which I love). In the next albums, his vocals are more prominent (my only issue in the mix). Jeff Lynne has a knack for melodies and for writing songs that have a haunting quality to them.
One last comment...this album in conceptual. Each song details the fantasy of a man who doesn't;t like his life and tends to live in his fantasy world in which he's the hero. Much of the narrative is him telling these fantasies to his therapist (Mr. Kingdom).

Pop music as it should be done IMO. I really like ELO - even their... well, I'll be honest, ESPECIALLY their disco-pop radio hits.
They developed out of one of my favourite psychedelic bands THE MOVE (very 1960s Britain).
Great fun and comments as always from you, I am just running out of phrases to emphasize how entertaining and at the same time musically attentive your approach is! The Alan Parsons Project reference certainly fits here.
Another fun fact - ELO had to deal with Union Musicians who packed up their instruments if the time was up - not a minute more. One of the songs has them packing up on the recording!

i agree man. the ending words in the song eldorado is the most emotional point in any ELO song i think
I cry at the end too, and at the beginning and most of the way inbetween. I only began hearing ELO around 1980-81, but after listening to all the records for 40 years, I know every little noise by heart, to the point where it's barely necessary to put the records on to hear them. As both my kids like ELO too, I suspect the music has even penetrated my dna.
the concept of the narrorator lives out his heros adventures while he is dreaming.the somg mr.kingdom is when he cant get to sleep to continue his adventureous life, which he dont have when he is awake.
Another one you listen to is ELO, The very Best of ELO you will love it.
ELO's ELDORADO is the best progressive rock album ever musically. Jeff Lynne is alive and well at 73 and will Tour with Jeff Lynne's ELO in 2022. I last saw them in July of 2019 on the US and Canada Tour. Forbes Magazine called them in 2019:" The Best Live Classic Rock Band In The World Still Touring" and i surely agree.
I recommend listening to A New World Record and Out of the Blue, in their entirety. Two of the best innovative albums ever done.

John Lennon once said that if the Beatles had kept making albums they might have sonded like ELO. High praise. Bob Dylan (the "other" guy in The Travelling Willburys) said Jeff Lynne was one of his favorite songwriters, again high praise. As for Pink Floyd you have to listen to their album Dark Side of the Moon, considered by many to be a masterpiece. Now when I go back and listen to the production it was great for the time but Jeff Lynne many years later redid almost all the tracks and the improvement in sound is striking. So if you like the sound of the originals you would be blown away by the latter version. Lynne was the mastermind behind ELO with lots of support from many talented musicians. When I hear this music I am reminded of John Lennon's solo work like on Double Fantasy. Even though this is a wonderfully creative album the best was still ahead. The next three albums, Face The Music, Out of the Blue and A New World Record just got better and better.

Jeff wrote this album because his dad told him that the trouble with his songs is that they have no tune which lead to this album he is the one who wrote all Elo songs and produced them.

Well said. His new album was no. 1 on the UK chart in November of 2019. His 2019 was called one of the best ever by Forbes Magazine and other reviews were outstanding.
each song runs into the start of the next on this album, it sold that many it gold a GOLD rating. i have the gold vinyl version.
I enjoyed your reaction to this album (although "Laredo Tornado", a disco song? No...just no). This was the first album in which Jeff Lynne brought in a full studio orchestra instead of having the violinist and cellist in the band handle most of the string parts. I prefer that earlier stripped down sound which is why "On The Third Day" is my favorite of their albums.

The Electric Light Orchestra is literally a rock band which utilises a number of classical instruments as well as rock instruments, basically an electrified light orchestra.
They became a tad less orchestral and more pop by the time Out Of The Blue was released in 1977, by the 1980s there was a lot less orchestra with their album Balance Of Power (1986) being very heavy on the synthesizers.

This album was recorded LOOOONG before even the first hint of 'Disco', btw...
Lynne's dad was spot on. I listened to their first three albums and came away with not much love for the sound. Too much Prog and not enough Rock. With "Eldorado", I felt the pop threshold had been finally crossed far enough without losing their basic identity. "Face the Music", "New World Record", "Out of the Blue" and "Discovery" are my favorite albums from their reign in the 70's.

As an aside Kate Bush was just 24 when her fourth album was released- like Jeff Lynne, she wrote, sang, played and produced the album.
Throughout the title track, and especially noticeable on the last chorus, Jeff is really channeling his inner Roy Orbison, who he has cited as being a huge influence on him.
Really awesome that they ended up being in the Wilburys together.
Before the E L O , they were the Move with Roy Wood , , this is one of the better early albums also Put of The Blue , and Time is amazing xxx I'm from Birmingham seen them over 30 times ,Jeff also wrote for so many people .
I am way way behind with this comment, but that first song on side two is a dead ringer for Across the Universe by The Beatles, before it turns into something completely different in its last minute or so, with the orchestral counterpart to power chords.

Jeff was often referred to as "The 5th Beatle". He produced George Harrison's solo album...the one with "Got My Mind Set on You" (he's even in the video, and sang back up). The other Wilbury you were trying to think of is the legendary Bob Dylan (he's not dead yet).
I think you'll find that George Martin was often referred to as the 5th Beatle. 🙂

2/5 of the Traveling Wilburys are still around, (Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan).
Respect for your handling of this record. Yes, Jeff was 27 when he made it, but if you count the albums he did before ELO, it wasn't his fourth, maybe eighth is more correct. He began his career more than ten years ! earlier, in 63. In 67-68 he was in the Idle Race, a band formed in 59 (!). When Jeff joined, it was the time of psychedelic music, and of course Beatles, who Jeff admired. (That's probably an understatement.) You spoke about Pink Floyd, and though there's no direct connection as far as I know, I can definitely hear similarities between Jeff and - Syd Barrett! Had Syd remained in PF, they might have sounded more eloish.
Interestingly, this album explores the concept of a person who for some reason goes insane, entering a dream world based on the movies and books he has used for escapism (these can more or less be identified from the lyrics, some are even mentioned explicitly in "Illusions In G Major", where he talks about his daydreams/hallucinations with a doctor, and isn't very keen on giving them up.) Jeff had explored this concept earlier in the Idle Race, and several times since, even in his most recent albums. (Yes, he is still turning out great music, and doing amazing concerts.)
Oh, btw, the one "Wilbury" that you could not remember, is the only other one still living: Bob Dylan.
I also believe that Richard Tandy (keyboardist/pianist etc) accompanies Jeff on some performances.
Given that Jeff's birthday is 30th Dec. 1947, he was 26 when the album was released.

You are right, as a big Pink Floyd fan "The Wall" and songs like that album don't work for me. Good channel, try the Album "Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus" by the band SPIRIT. Amazing. Peace!

Ok, on another reaction video about ELO, I didn't hear a Beatle flavor in their songs. This album is not one I was ever drawn to actually listening to. Have to admit they do indeed have the Beatle/blues touch. Not my fav. but, their talent shows strong. Actually, Eldorado is the only song I recognized.
