- Chioma Okoli, the Facebook user who has been embroiled in a legal battle since 2023, when she reviewed the Nagiko Tomato Mix, a product of Erisco Foods Limited, has suffered a pregnancy loss.
Effiong Inibehe, Okoli’s legal representative, confirmed this on Wednesday via a post on his X page, noting that the Federal High Court in Abuja remanded her in Suleja Custodial Centre on Tuesday. Okoli’s ordeal began in September 2023, when she posted on Facebook that Erisco Foods’s Nagiko Tomato paste was sugary and subsequently asked those who had used the tomato puree to share their experiences.
In response to a Facebook user who asked her to “stop spoiling my brother [sic] product”, Chioma reportedly wrote, “Help me advise your brother to stop ki**ing people with his product; yesterday was my first time using it, and it’s pure sugar. Tueh!,” Acting on a criminal petition written against her by Eric Umeofia, the owner of the company, the police arrested Chioma in Lagos and immediately flew her to Abuja. She was then taken to court, where she was charged with cybercrime.

why should someone be held in jail because of an opinion. This should have been a civil case. To put a consumer in jail because of an opinion is bullying by the company.

If Nigeria is a normal society, all this wouldn’t have happened. All they need to do is for our Food Regulatory body to take sample of their paste in the market and test/measure the amount of sugar gram in it and compare it to the standard

She should have stated that she has thrown it away. At least she bought it from somewhere. If she supplied the information on where she got it, the company could have been able to track the batch if she actually did the review in good faith.
Those who were pushing her didn't love her. She should have heeded the advice of her previous lawyer instead of this current one that's looking for cheap popularity
All I can say is that Erisco should just limit their business to only Nigeria. If they come abroad THEN they will see the main dragging. People review products online in the western and some categorically will say “don’t buy this product… it’s trash”.
People opinions and reviews doesn’t land dem in court. Infact many channels exist only to review products abroad. Experts on technology, cosmetics, anything take apart/ tear apart products from brands to reveal their strengths and weaknesses. No brand is spared.
Erisco should please grow up… manufacturing business is not for the faint hearted.

It’s so sad, I wish the matter was resolved better from both ends.
I don’t think she aimed to destroy any business. She shared her experience and asked a question if anyone else has the same experience.
She should have deleted the hostile’s comments and advise to state their experiences honestly and without bias.
She threw the can if the tomato paste/puree away so there was no way to get the batch number. The agency for advertising should also get involved by WARNING THE PUBLIC TO CALL THE CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE (AND THIS SHOULD BE FREE) if there is any product issue they detect after using any PROCESSED food products.

It's rather ironic that they said the product can kill people and the case killed the woman's kids in the process. Erisco CEO takes things personally and it is not today he's fighting. Unfortunately, he sees her as an enemy or sponsored by an enemy. With this victim mindset, he can't see it any other way.
This is just so sad. Here in the West, people are actually paid to review products. Reviews are good for business, they can go back and correct their mistakes. I am so sad to hear the woman lost her baby, I wonder how Erisco feel now. She shouldn't be asked to provide a batch number nor forced to apologise, the customer is always right but hey that only applies in the West and not 9ja. Erisco didn't truly handle this issue well but you can't dedicate for people how to react, this reviewer messed up by saying the product is killing people. Let's stop being emotional about this.

I bought it but thought it was a one time thing so I ignored it ,then yesterday I saw a woman a woman come online and showed it to the world . This is a typical case of what is also obtainable in our society even to the family dynamics. People do not like receiving negative reviews or feedback especially in this country. Some will even say you lack respect. I have seen some interviews and when the journalist is asking questions in a bid to evade the scrutiny you will begin to hear ‘do you know who I am or how long I have been here’ or they will try to demean the journalist by saying things like you were a small boy or girl’. In a country where people that are meant to protect the oppressed are allegedly the ones used as pawn to oppress the poor.

@@followGreatness she didn't go alone. She went with her lawyer and the issue was resolved since she was unable to provide any information about the "product" claimed she bought (the company reached out asking for batch number to trace if there's an error in production) but she refused.
Her lawyer was involved in the resolution.
