    I recently switched to studio one from PT and came across this video while watching your other studio one videos. Gave it a listen out of curiosity though I already use analog summing.
    Your setup apollo/d-box is exactly like mine and I would agree on the difference in sound having done it for a few years now.
    I haven't done this test in studio one but I did it in pro tools and I imagine it would be the same. I tried putting channels 7 and 8 on the D-box in mono instead of 4 stereo sums then routing the kick/bass to 7 and 8 respectively versus keeping them on a stereo channel. I was quite surprised at the difference.
    I tried this on a few different tracks and now 7/8 I just keep in mono. The low end/stereo imaging feels more defined.
    I do allot of electronic music so the kick is very important but often I route things through drum buss/parallel buss as well and want the kick in the buss. In those cases I often just put a low cut on the stereo group and route the kick through it. Then I will take a send of the kick channel and bring it back on an aux and send that out mono. It's less noticeable when I am working on a more rock/less bass heavy type of track.
    I suggest giving it a go sometime and I would be curious if you find the results as noticeable as I did.

      Thank you very much for the tip! You are 100% correct and I would recommend anyone using a D-box try your method for sure. Thank you for sharing with the cormmunitity.

      I also have an Apollo going out to a Dbox and have been using one of the mono tracks for bass guitar, but I like the idea of using the other mono channel for kick (I use it for lead vocals sometimes and let a stereo pair handle reverbs/delays). However, if sending the kick to its own Dbox channel, how do you handle doing bus compression on drum bus? Do you just not include the kick on a drum bus?

    "you're just gonna make you're bad mix sound like its an analog bad mix" awesome! thx for this info I'm actually getting started and a newbie to the sound engineering world, I have such an awesome mentor who has recommended me to follow you and gotta say I've learned a lot from both of you. Still working on getting my mixes well done and balanced before I get to this point I just wanted to see what summing was all about.

    Thanks again for that great tutorial. I use a Midas F24 for summing and because I don't like the FW connection (cheap connector and you are able to put the cable 180˚ in) of that mixer I bought an Antelope Orion 32 and the sound has improved a lot.

  • @FredoJ
    @FredoJ 9 років тому +1

    Hi David!
    What about using an analog console as the summing device? We could have individual channels to recieve the "stems" and fine tune them and phisically tweak the sound. Or send them trough the aux to valve preamps and warm the sound, and then from the analog console back to to the audio interface and the print channel.
    Well, just an idea...

    Great vid! I have a question. Let's say you have an outboard compressor and you want to send your drum buss through that compressor. How can you do that if you have all your outputs being sent to the d box? Is that possible? Thanks!

    • @HomeRecordingMadeEasy
      @HomeRecordingMadeEasy  9 років тому +1

      +Juan Germano I think you would need additional outputs so you can reserve a few outputs for that. Not sure becasue I do have that set-up .....YES...lol

    Great video, kinda confusing but I’ll just have to watch it more than once for it to set in properly. Now quick question, is this routing (including a print track) the same method one would use for getting the functions of say an outboard EQ or sonic maximizer onto the your recorded tracks (hope that makes sense)?...BTW I use studio one with the presonus 16.4.2 as the audio interface...thanks again for the hugely informative videos!!!!

THANKS! Great video. One quick question how would you go about parallel compression on the mix bus using plugins via a send bus? I tried putting on my print track but I get a feed back loop feeding it through the dangerous music LT and out into S1. Any tips? Suggestions? Thanks again

    I'm curious. I have a Mackie Onyx 1640i as my audio interface, which is an analogue mixer with 16 in/out FireWire. I'm able to route tracks from S1 to the mixer and back. Would going through the 1640i's analogue interface back to an S1 print track serve the same function as using a summing device? Or would I need to buy a separate summing device?

    • @HomeRecordingMadeEasy
      @HomeRecordingMadeEasy  8 років тому +1

      +Braun Haus Media, LLC Same exact concept and yes, you are in fact then running you stems through the Mackie and that severed as your "summing" device. However, I am not sure about the quality of that paticular mixer and typically the more high end summing amps have much better transformers in them which in turn will give you a better analog effect. Having said that, running through the Mackie is better than not doing it at all.

    • @braunhausmedia
      @braunhausmedia 8 років тому +1

      +Home Recording Made Easy Thanks. It's Mackie's top of the line mixer and sounds pretty beautiful to me (and certainly cost me enough at the time), but I've long felt I haven't used it to its full potential. If I can figure out the routing on the thing, the idea of injecting at least some of the analogue sound into my mixes is enticing. My first years in a recording studio were spent using 24 track tape recorders and outboard effects, so the thought of being able to capture at least some of that sound would be great. As a small aside, I'll never forget the first time I heard a really great engineer work the board and bring a mix of one of my songs alive with simple EQ adjustments. It was a revelation. Some of the things you're teaching remind me of that. I'm in the midst of Mixing Made Easy Part 2 and have already learned a lot. I'm seeing what a difference it can make to a mix using the simple techniques you teach. Thank you for making these products available, especially at a price that's about a tenth (or less) than what others are charging.

      The basic question was => does it make sense to use analog summing, when I use CTC-1? Can I use both at the same time or is that too much? Is analog summing better than using CTC-1? Sorry for the confusion.

      Yes you can use analog summing when using the CTC-1 for sure. In my mind it's not too much at all. However, you will hear different opinions on that.

    what interface would you recommend using along with the D-box for pc users being that the apollo's are for mac users?

    • @HomeRecordingMadeEasy
      @HomeRecordingMadeEasy  7 років тому

      Apollo's can be used with PC as well. However you can also try the Presonus Studio 192 which is another great interface

    Another great video but how does the routing for my bussing go when using NLS in S13 PRO instead of outboard gear? Thank You!

    • @HomeRecordingMadeEasy
      @HomeRecordingMadeEasy  7 років тому

      You simply route your busses to the main output. No special routing needed if you are not using outboard hardware

    Would you set this up/use this as a session template as well, so you can track etc with the audio summing at the same time?

    Is there a template for a UAD quad

      Home Recording Made Easy sorry I’m kinda new to this analog summing. You explained it well. I just got an analog summing unit and I have a UAD quad. I thought a template might help. I’ve. Been using studo one for a while so I’ll be fine. Thanks

    Do you have to compensate for round-trip latency. after hitting the dbox

      I do not believe so.

    So Dave, I'm a UAD Apollo x8 guy. Since you use UAD as well, is the UAD Neve Summing Amp worth the purchase compared to the D-Box? I know you mentioned in this video that the D-Box offers more than just the analog summing but if I were just looking for the functionality of summing, is the UAD Neve summing worth the purchase? Have you personally used/demo'ed it?
