Tent stoves (kamiina), like the one in the second clip, are familiar to most Finnish men from their military service since we use them to warm up the tents when camping. The Finnish winters can be very cold, so it's important to keep the fire burning.
Yep, and for some people it's just too difficult to learn how to use it. Another thing they don't learn to use is the storm lantern, too many moving parts.
Gameshow host Tony Hällfors became famous thanks to this one broadcast. Later he was hosting a charity phone show where people were invited to send messages. Wood plane and thongs were popular messages and he commented calmly "No, I don't need to care about my reputation, it's gone a long time ago."
The fishrmen did not sell the fish (because health and safety) but they measured the weight of it at their local grocery shop and the ticket says "karambola" because the scale won't give the sticker out unless you choose the variety that you want the price tag for (in Finland shoppers have to weigh eg. vedgies and fruits at the shop scale to get the price tag). And since you were jamming to the camera guy shouting "KAHEN KILON SIIKA" , there's a song made out of it which is at least as legendary as that original clip.
2:40 thats a dude, who hasnt slept for few days, and then some offduty Drivers in army who are in charge of keeping the stove warm keep him awake. I am not suprised he is angry :D
That kipinämikko thing was just amateurish because everybody knows you shove the stove full of wood so much you can stay away for 1-2 hours and the tent is like sauna for that time.
The stove would be so hot that it glows red. As the saying goes "make the stove as a strawberry". It was so hot that people sleeping crawl out of their sleeping bags in the middle of the coldest winter night. Then the kipinämikko don't add wood for several hours so the tent gets cold and people are now sleeping in their under wares in below zero decree temperature .😅😜
@@Retreturi if you hate going to the other tents to put logs in the stove, only putting two is an amateur thing to do. A professional lazy kipinämikko stuffs the stove full of wood
The part of the Finnish tent/stove stuff was kind of hilarious. However, as a Finn who went through this a long time ago (in the winter time when temperature was below -20C) I can say that being the guy responsible for the fire was actually pretty much the best part of the exercise (except for the time you could sleep of course). Being the guy responsible for the fire (that kept every 15 or so other guys warm(ish) and alive) gave you the opportunity to make hot chocolate, tea, to cook other food you happened to have on you, it was awesome for me.
The 2K whitefish is the absolute most legendary one because I think even my parents were vaguely aware of it, but the gameshow host is my personal favorite and stays hilarious every time I see it.
The TV-host thing was from gameshows that ran at late night tv. I don't think they are a thing anymore but cannot be sure because I don't really watch tv that much anymore. But to give some context it was something like 2 in the morning, host had to sound enthusiastic for probably an empty studio, he has several hours still to go and only people to call were guys that started trolling when they didn't win any money.
Yeah, they ran late at night and during daytime when no other programming was on. They were basically just a way to make money because it wasn't cheap to call in or send a text.
The price tag for carambola shows the weight of the fish. Because to get on the Finnish record fish registry, you need to measure the fish on a scale that is accurate enough. The vegetable/fruit scale in supermarkets are considered as such scales. So they went in to weight the fish and printed a label for "carambola" on it to show the weight. It shows it weighs 1,686 kilograms. Also nice to know, that in 2008 when the meme became popular, 1,686 kilos of carambolas costed 22,76 euros. 😅
The insignia of the 1st guy hat was Blue/white. is an logo for Finnish defense force's During training there's is this guy who doesn't sleep like in certain moment but keep the fire a lit in tents that are under his/her responsibility. So the one's that aren't in local defense position/ doing this same of their own tent can sleep. And he's so fed up with this so he purposely whack the tent stove lid as he adds more wood.(like if i'm not sleeping neither do you)
I was only familiar with the Siika one before. The cameraman is pretty funny. Speaks like a Kummeli character at one point. I don't watch that much TV and have no idea what that show is, but it's definitely not the kind you see at prime time. I'm pretty sure it's in the wee hours and the callers are of the caliber you might expect for that time of the night. One meme to look for is "On tämä saatanan työmaa". It's an audio recording of a forest harvester operator who's machine won't start and he lets the whole forest hear what he thinks about that. You could check out "Bears in Canada vs Finland" too.
During the military service looking after the upright stove in a tent during a heating watch (1 hour in the most inconvenient hour of the night) was a chore. Being as quiet and discreet as possible while not overheating or letting folks get cold was an art. Even when done optimally everybody was always unhappy with the heat. In my time the FDF was getting rid of the old shoe shine paste, and we quickly learned that it on some näkkileipä (dry rye bread) would rekindle the fire fast, or light a new one.
These are quite difficult ones since there is so much cultural context, language, tones, everything! I would imagine they are not funny at all in English.
"Do people still say Jonne?" Yes, though the meaning of the word has somewhat changed since it's origin in 2010's. Nowdays' in the Finnish internet circles, it's more of a generational term describing the Millenials. The other similar terms are, Kalevi for Boomers, Ykä for Gen-X and Veeti for Zoomers. All of these are male given names considered common or at least stereotypical for the generation.
Ah yes... the stove... How many times I've woken up in the middle of the night because... Kipinä has fallen asleep and left the tent freezing... Hajooo!!!
Mmm... Yeah, one of the better parts of doing jäger related stuff in the army was that quietness during camping, especially during the night, was a requirement.
Camera causes a lot of accidents by making people do unwise things for the sake of entertainment. Army is a good place to do amateur studies on sleeping and other human behavior. The conscripts take shifts in keeping the fire in the tent through the night. The drivers however are allowed to sleep continuously certain amount of hours, because they are responsible of people's safely, so they aren't that bothered about keeping the fire. After the army aggression, there was the drunken aggression in the "rural harmony". The ice fishing clip shows that catching a fish goes ahead of compassion for your friend (hook in his finger) and general safety (slippery thin ice). That TV game show goes under the same title as TV chats, which hosts' job description is to get people participate and then some people abuse and heckle them. Here someone sent a picture to the host, whose name is Jutta: "Se Oikea - Kulli kuvaviesti".
They had all kinds of game shows. Someone should make a compilation of them xD they were honestly either really boring or funny as hell. i remember watching them in summer when I was teenager, while I was waiting something more interesting to come from tv. These usually started in morning and went on several hours on different channels. Some of them were kind of, controversial. Like lets say balloon game, where hostess was in bikinis.
( the second clip) Puolijoukkueteltta = tent that can fit 16 people, so it will be cold in there, kamiina will keep it warm, i is like a campfire, but you can have it inside a tent
the last one didnt show it all the way after that last call he was done with thw callers and asked if they were from a mental hospital and revealed the asked the guys in charge of showing the photo to remove all the door things and started saying a hint that was that you use it to dry your hair
Kahen kilon siika: they went to the nearest shop to weigh the fish on the scale that is used to weigh and price vegetables and fruit - therefore they have karambola fruit price sticker with the weight 1,686kg of the fish.
I so relate to that army thing...though i had best time been driven around as i was officer candidate. I got break from idiots...Just 10 minutes and then i had to say where to go and there plan with artillery how do we defend them. They weren't interested so back we do and position change. "good news guys, pack your shit and we move in 20 minutes" go...
In the siika (fish) video the price isn't for the fish (it's for the carambola fruit also known as star fruit). After catching the fish they just went to the local store and asked if they could weight their fish (siika) that they had in a bag. If they wanted the sticker that had the weight on it printed out they had to use one of the items already there and karambola was the button they used so they got the sticker (so the price is what the fruits would have cost not the fish).
