I remember reading them back in high school, i graduated in '91. I will have to revisit them. See if they still hold up. I remember loving them and getting thru a three book set in about a week.
Thank you so much for this! I recently inherited my parents (both have passed years ago) giant book collection and am at a loss for where to start 😅 I can’t wait to relive what they have read through, it’ll be like I’m with them in the journey 💔❤
YAAAAAAS LOVE the forgotten realms books! Totally agree there are so many places to start it's really dealer's choice with what kind of creatures or tropes people like
R.A SALVATORES forgotten realms are amazing. I have been reading them for years. I am currently on book 31 on the series and I can honestly say this is the best series I have ever read.
I would recommend Elminster over Drizzt, but that’s me. That’s for a starting place though, Greenwood and Salvatore are both authors that are not for everyone. I started with Homeland, if you can deal with how bad The Crystal Shard is and know that it’s the worst one, then maybe start there. My first FR books was actually the Brimstone Angels series, which was fine, good books. Not some bad recs. I made a blog post with a similar topic and it’s hard because I had to base my recommendations mostly on what I’ve read myself, plus the need to be so general because not everyone likes the same books and re not looking for the same thing to start. So good job!
Thanks for the tips and info! I just finished Darkwalker on Moonshae and the completion ist in me wants to continue in publication order. I gained a lot of FR knowledge though in this video 😊
I started the Drizzt series back in 2005 with the Dark Elf Trilogy when my boss at the time let me borrow his one-volume copy of those three books, then borrowed from him the Icewind Dale Trilogy, Legacy of the Drow, and Paths of Darkness in order, and despite the difference in style between the Dark Elf and Icewind Dale Trilogies, I think chronological is the way to go rather than publication because it doesn't disrupt the flow of the story. Said boss was transferred to a different store while I was reading Paths of Darkness and Hunter's Blades were the most recent books at the time, but he didn't have them and I left the company not long after returning the last book to him, so I didn't and still have not read Hunter's Blades and kind of fell off, but after having bought one-volume editions of the Dark Elf and Icewind Dale Trilogies and Legacy of the Drow, I have recently obtained a one-volume edition of Paths of Darkness, and I am aware of the Transitions Trilogy, the Neverwinter Saga, and The Sundering and what follows that, but first need to obtain the Hunter's Blades trilogy somehow. And yes, there is Road of the Patriarch, but that's more about Jarlaxle and Entreri following after Paths of Darkness.
I’ve been reading the 10 first Drizzt books the last 18 months. stopped with nr. 10. ‘passage to dawn’. it was too slow for me. 1/3 of the book spent hunting pirates etc. I did read the Canticle quintet too. I found that great too. Gonna pick up Drizzt again one day. The harpers series no. 5 ‘Ring of winter’ is also good for lore.
Amen brother. I almost skipped book 10. But good news. The books pick back up pace tremendously. I am on book 31 right now and I can honestly say. Alot of action. Alot of fire balls and lightning bolts. Alot of scimitar slashing and hammer bashing. You will love it
Without AD and D Forgotten Realms mani and the books, you would never have the RISE OF GAMES LIKE Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate and Skyrim and Daggerfall! Oblivion, Two Worlds, and Guild Wars, etc. Thank God for the men who created TSR.
Don't forget steven erikson the malazan book of the fallen the series comes from him and friends world building while playing D&D it leans more towards dark fantasy then most D&D based games
My birth mother named me Catti-Brie lmao, i found out where my name came from after someone at a starbucks was like 'your name really isnt cattibrie is it?' and proceeded to tell me about the book series
This video is news to me. I didnt know there were other stories. The Drizzt books have been just wonderful. A friend told me to start at Homeland, and wow am I glad I did. They were great! I feel like my love for Drizzt carried me through the Crystal Shard books. So I would suggest starting at Homeland.
I enjoyed all Salvatore s books including the other series he has written Lisa smedmen spin-off lady pendent was great following the war of the spider Queen series
Seems you have read more forgotten realms books than you have covered in this video, have you considered doing a sequel to this video to cover what you have read and recommend what’s not in this video or what series you plan to read?
I'm curious about how often the books cross over? For example. Do we hear about characters in Drizzt's novels in others, and vice versa? I understand if they don't. Different writers working at the same time.
Elminster was Greenwood's D&D character. Thus, he was used as an NPC during their games. Greenwood is probably the least talented writer of the FR novelists. Just my 2 cents. The Drizzt Books are great. But the Avatar Trilogy is probably the best way to be introduced to the realms. It was originally a trilogy (Shadowdale, Tantras and Waterdeep) and then the others were added later. The Avatar Trilogy sort of sets the stage for the whole world and the various books written about the areas of the realms.
Hi! I enjoy female led Forgotten Realms novels. Can any of you recommend any? I've already read the War of the Spider Queen series, The Lady Penitent trilogy, Empyrean Odyssey, Brimstone Angels, Venom in Her Veins, and Shandril's Saga.
My favorite is a novel called Silverfall about the seven chosen of Mystra. I also recommend Elaine Cunningham’s novels in the Harpers series. There are two leads but one of them is female and the male lead is hilarious.
I liked Daughter of the drow not so much book 2 and 3 but the plot does tie into war of the spider queen quite nicely and gives house hunzrin an interesting introduction
@@PrimmsBookCave The series by Elaine Cunningham is called Songs and Swords right? It's on my list. Seems very interesting. 🙂 thanks so much for your recommendation.

Ed Greenwood's Forgotten Realms. R. A. Salvatore, as much as I love his work, is not the creator of the setting.
