Hey all, couple notes for this one I realized after uploading. - water bladders are awesome BUT you should still carry at least one water bottle with you as a backup given bladders are notorious for leaking. Also nice to have a separate container to mix electrolytes into. Also they suck to clean, pro tip, give their a rinse, dry them reasonably well, then keep them in the freezer when not using. This keeps any mold/mildew from growing. - nail clippers are another great thing to include as over the course of a few days, hangnails can be a pain. Also you’ll find out after the first big hike if any toenails are needing a trim. Tweezers are also handy (especially if in an area with cacti) - trekking poles have their place, especially during sections of continuous downhill hiking, but don’t rely on them as overuse will limit the development of the muscles that help you with balance, so you could end up becoming more dependant on the poles and less able to tackle unstable/uneven terrain. I’ll continue to add other notes/comments/tips that strike me as being super helpful. For tons more backcountry knowledge, do yourself a favor and check out the “longhouse” playlist on Hill People Gear’s UA-cam channel. Soak up all the knowledge Even and Scot have put in there. You know what a great backpacking item is that most people never think to bring? Grocery bags. I bring a couple with me any time im going to be spending a few days out in the wilderness. when you have a pair of dirty wet socks, dirty wet underwear, dirty sandy wet t-shirt etc...it sucks putting things like that right back into your backpack spoiling the rest of your clean/dry gear. Also, putting all of your gear inside of a trash bag before it goes into your backpack is a great way to keep your stuff dry in case of rain, or falling out of a canoe lol
You’re not wrong, but they’re hard to seal. My wife and I bought a bunch of dry bags when they went on sale and they worked awesome. Different sizes to accommodate some of the different uses you mentioned
As far has the hydration pack filtration goes, the soyer will go online easily. I cut off 3” of the end of the hose and attached it to the soyer filter. I keep it in my pack and can put it on when needed. The camelback mouth piece comes off and I attach it the 3” of hose and the soyer into the hose where the mouth piece was. Cheaper option.
Cloth vented boonie ftw. I'd recommend one with a hideaway neck flap. Total neck coverage without wearing a thing around your neck, which I hate. Once you mentioned the strong wind, I knew instantly what hike this was, B.L. trail. Windiest place I've ever been. Abbreviated because I don't want anyone to know about this place lol, and I'm only 1/3 into the vid

I get wanting to keep pants pockets empty and light but you really need to keep some very important gear like fire starters, blades, medical, ect on you not in a bag in case you get separated from your bag your not left with nothing but clothes.

It sounded like you put everything in the backpack where it's hard to get to and can be separated but even the chest rig the chest bag you're talking about could get separated from you, you take a tussle down a hill or whatever. But a great video man I watched every minute of it even the ads.
@@mortem-tyrannis 🙏🏻 you can technically just latch the kit bag without harness to a pack, but typically you put them on with their included H harness first, then sling your main pack over. Then they have the neat ability to dock to your shoulder straps via quick links (grimlocks) that counterbalance the load. Your gear would be so linked to you at that point that I would have a hard time imagining it falling off. But acknowledged you want certain gear wth you always. I almost always had the kit bag with me, but if just going to cook some food or whatever away from camp I still had a knife and flashlight with me, and would take a can of bear spray as well.

Right. If just doing some basic hiking trail with the wife, a complete and thorough first aid kit would be at the top imo. I wouldn't even worry about tactical gear, etc especially if its warm enough to do the hike in shirt and shorts as they were doin.

Bit late to the video, I was wondering what kind of backpack/rucksack/hiking back are you using? Been using a 82 surplus ruck frame and was thinking of upgrading to a bigger better one, any tips?!
I have two of those Camelbak M.A.P.S. filters. Haven't used or tested either yet, so I can't verify how good they are. Being I'm in the United States, I got one of mine off MidwayUSA(at the time of this comment, 2 in stock)and the other off Tacticalgear(now unavailable) . I haven't been able to find what the lifespan(gallons or litres)is, so with these not being cheap(compared to a sawyer). I'd definitely recommend using some kind of pre-filter to extend the life as much as possible.
Since your are a Canadian I am disappointed that you didn’t get any Arc’teryx LEAF products which is great or Patagonia military gear only available on eBay but it rocks and is soo cheap compared to actual Patagonia products!
I am American and don't really care what country you are from everyone in my opinion should have a firearm for person protection and in the event SHTF the ability to hunt your own food. Oh yes first time seeing your channel and I will subscribe. I am definitely going to get the UF PRO pants/jackets/short for the winter. They are pricey but the quality seems to be superior. So I will get 4 different sets at different times of course

9mm Export Mauser or 9x25 that you can probably make easy fromother shells is WHAT YOU NEED FOR BEARS! That and a Good Slug! IDK much about bear defense but there is some "Silver SOMETHING Liberty" or something all silver (I thing Alluminum or it's aloy that fires CONFIRMED 2600ft/p from a bit longer barrel and 2400 fps from 4" barrel) SNOW I AM EUROPEAN BUT I BELIEVE IT IS WELL ABOVE 800m/s and even if it could not be removed from watermelon it...well comparing what it did to watermelon and I used to be DM (platoon to squad level sniper who overwatches situation, reports any strangness and most importantly DPROPS most dangerous targets and directs Your Arty on enemy,if god willing AN Air-strikes!) and I KNOW WELL what kind of bullet does to human "parts" and this "instant brain smoothy maker and head caver" with only 60grain HP will be able to completely smash plates and possibly kill the wearer of the bad plate carrier by filling him with shards and it is a good SMG round from short to long distance for CQB in a gun or a SMG (Glock 18 with a mix of HP or HRT and AP ammo was my always go trough! Had something similar like the first gun in the center you have, with a stock and red dot but those thing were just in inception back then! I had a frame with a stick where when you put it becomes SMG for all intent and purposes.(Nothing with a sturdy and ultralightweight but secure frame stock!) and when you pull it out, well it had the same purpose as that 9mm Export Mauser had with a famous Elephant hunter becomes who use it for "a bit too unfriendly indigenous people due to its UNGODLY BOOOM and to have a good laugh make them run and try to avoid bullets my jumping for a few hundred more due to my ricochets around them" he says "and a for a few 100 more after that when I shoot in their general direction but I am proud I never killed a human being with it, none after a Great War" memoirs claim...Well today, when every skinny is toting an AK or something bigger and they are hostile enough to kill you for a treat in your pockets and to show females "how deadly and fashionable they are" I AM TELLING YOU that G18 griped like they do it and fired in their general direction ower you head (allow the cut-out to help you arch it) WILL MAKE MOST OF THEM DROP GUNS AND RUN AS FAST AS...well this part is awkward not to sound much racist but that was the nature of the work! I use a .50 AR Beowulf as a bear gun, haven't had to use it but I think it has enough ass behind it to put a bear in a bad way.

That’s the beauty of the kit bag, you just leave it on even when you drop your pack.
