ABOUT ME
I’m 32 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it before, but can we all just appreciate the wonderful wooden interior of the shed ! No concrete or galvanised runs, no clanking metal causing stress to the sheep, (and the shearers). So nice to see. Loving this Icelandic trip.

I am guessing they build from all wood as it has a lot better thermal value that concrete or metal
It makes a huge difference. We bought a 100 year old farm that had been just about covered over in concrete and steel and have been jack hammering and cutting like mad and replacing with rough cut lumber. The sheep are much happier and tame

Old sheds down here were mostly timber and pens under neath.
And here I thought the hanging loop was for suspending the sheep in midair, but no, it’s there to save the shearer’s back, so they can go for another round! 😉

This is VERy fun to watch. The White ones look uniform and so beautiful. BUT...always a but, the coloured ones are breathtaking in their amazing variety. It is really interesting to see this variation in colours.

Love the information on how the data gets used to improve the flock’s genetics! The breed has been in Iceland for millennia, and selected over the years for their amazing quality wool (so glad that their wool is valued like it should be!!!). And of COURSE Robbie Burns had to toast the haggis!🐑❤️

Almost all (like 95% plus) Icelanders can speak English, so I don't get why you are so surprised. It's taught as a second language.
@@GotAnUmbrella yes they are proud of their English and also it is necessary. I spent 18 months in Norway as a nanny. I learned the language mainly through the children and had them in stitches when I mentioned a ‘rocking’ horse in a field. Only the older generation who had learned German let me speak their language.
@@GotAnUmbrella Hi, I think it was admiration 🙂 because here in the UK I was never taught a second language. I am 65 but it’s still not compulsory to learn a second language in some schools. 🤷🏻♀️
Love seeing all those Icelandic sheep! I just finished knitting a cardigan out of Icelandic wool. The great escape was hilarious! I also enjoyed your recitation over the haggis. Take care
I want to learn how to do that. If/when my husband and I get the land we need, we want to start an Icelandic sheep farm ( in Canada though) and I want to knit with some of the wool.

I am sure there was this type of sheep in the Western Isles 30 years ago or something very similar, as sheep with that small white face/head and such a square body are very distinct features

Is the quality of Icelandic sheep's wool of a high standard, or just the same as the majority in the UK?
Will you be bring any Icelandic sheep back with you to Ayrshire?

Good question Tammy. Probably ur hands get sorest after a lot of shearing u start wearing through your skin and u have to tape them all up

Cammy, how is the wool used in Iceland( apart from the obvious!), do the farmers get any more money compared to British sheep farmers for their wool?🤔. Also, how many farms are there on the island and are the farms capped in size??. Just curious!! My Icelandic Shetland cross rams./wethers were always beastly to shear...very kicky and they could get their feet under them in a flash. Got kicked enough in tender enough spots to make me glad I am not a male. lol great shearing, and PS, yeah, my wethers/rams did the same dumb stuff...fighting after shearing.

Enjoying the videos of Iceland. Quite amazing sheep. I’m curious about what is done with the wool. Would you give a video about the process?
I don't know what everyone does with it but when I honeymooned there with my husband they had sweaters and hats hand knit by knitting clubs in many of the stores. From locally produced wool. I wear my hat every winter.

Something else to address. An old one…plastic bags n wellies…stuffed, they stopped giving us the plastic bags. They were built just right. The bought bin liners don’t work

I can see what you mean by easy peelers, my flock was winter shorn,in spite of pushing them up tight to warm them up the shearer had to keep oiling. I am guessing two things. 1. You met Lizzy in Norge. 2. You enjoyed dramatic recital at school.

Thanks Sarah! Unsteinn contacted me over a year ago about visiting them for the mountain gather but I couldn't make it because we went to St Kilda with Landward so I went for shearing instead 😄

You’ve probably covered this before, but do you think the body suspensions help take stress of your back while sheering ?

They do take the stress of your back and helps in extending the shearers life. Used all over the world. Another New Zealand invention along with those Te Pari yards.
Thanks Terrie. Yeah they do take the stress off your back and they are very good if you are on slow shearing sheep such as merinos. Because most sheep I shear are quite easy shearing I don't get a sore back so I don't need one.

Many questions: when did you start steering? How did you learn? How far have you traveled to sheer? How many countries have you sheers in? Does all the wool go to be processed? Why does belly wool jot get processed for clothes or clothing? How old is a sheep at first steering? Is a ram harder to sheer or is it same as a ewe, just bigger (more powerful)? Have you ever been bitten when steering? What about bio'd (poop or peed) on? Thanks in advance for your time and consideration in reply.

Yeah they get a good price for the wool but mainly meat

Thanks. It's because the solid dropper does all the work for you. It's sprung so as you swing the hand piece it pushed and pulls it for you and u hardly have to work whereas with the flexi u have to do all the pushing and pulling =D

Just into the barn they'll be lambing in May
The barns you were shearing in, are the the same the sheep live in? There doesn't seem to be much room for them to move around. I understand they are in over the winter.
Yeah they all stay here. Being a bit tighter is important for keeping them clean on the slats. If they don't have enough sheep in the pens the dung doesn't get pushed through and they get all dirty. It also helps keep them nice and warm.

Cammy what is the difference between the sheep you have and the Icelandic sheep? I saw a shearer in a sling type thing. Why do they use those?
Very different breeds Sarah. Mine are quite soft but they're big and milky. These are smaller but they are tough!
Icelandic sheep are considered a primitive breed.
Why are they shearing as winter begins? Don’t the sheep need their wool to keep warm?
They go into an insulated shed so they are nice and warm
