    This is Part 2 of the Harbor Freight Utility Tilt Trailer assembly.
    After assembling the trailer with nuts and bolts I welded 90 % of the bolted channels including the hitch assembly. It was a 4x8 feet folding and tilt Utility Trailer.
    1195 lbs cap.
    It has been modified to carry a Golf Cart or ATV and still be used as a Utility trailer.
    It was a lot of welding but its reinforced especially the side rails made it even more sturdy. I would recommend it to anyone who buys one of these, its pretty flimsy with just the bolts.
    I used 2" angle line to added some more cross beams and two front to back as well as for side rails and extended the back of the trailer 5" with them. The front has the rail tilted forward so that I gained another 5". The side Rails were also slanted toward the sides so that the Wheels of a golf cart or ATV will not get damaged if they happen to rub against them.
    The trailer bed now measures 8 feet and 10 Inches long and 4 feet and 4 inches wide from the top of the side rails.
    The expanded metal I used for the floor was a good idea, Steel Standard Expanded Metal 3/4" #13 (4ft x 8ft) the wheel traction was very good while driving up the expanded metal floor. I'm glad I dint use plywood it would have been very slippery when wet. I test drove it with my H3 Hummer and it was smooth riding, after going around the neighborhood a few times and took it on the State Road to get some speed I dint even feel it anymore.
    The only thing left is to find a spot to mount the spare tire and stick some reflector tape to the back. I will probably add more to it.
    Next test will be to hook it in back of the Motorhome and see what kind of ride that will give me.
    I will be filming it when it happens....
    Finished strapping all the wires after coating it with shrink tubing and wire insulator.

    What I did on my trailer to stop it from slamming when I load or unload something is I welded a cross beam on the tongue and used a 12volt sissor jack now I have power tilt up and down, it was $60 on Amazon

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  8 років тому

      That's a great suggestion.where do you plug in to g power? Thanks for the input.

    • @pfcgerold
      @pfcgerold 8 років тому +1

      I put a little box on the front that I keep some straps in for when I haul my mower or dirt bikes so I put a lawn mower battery in the box and cut the plug off the jack and ran it direct with a toggle for power cut of so if something was on the remote it wouldn't try and raise and a 30amp fuse
      Also from my truck I ran a 2wire plug that battery maintainers have to keep it charged also with a 30amp fuse you can get the 2wire plug at just about any auto parts store
      Hope this all helps and if you do the mod hope you like it

    • @pfcgerold
      @pfcgerold 8 років тому +1

      Or if you wanted you could just run power back to it with the 2wire plug and you don't need a batt
      I have a batt for other stuff
      Air for tires fuel transfer ect. ect.

      a long ram hydraulic jack is better and only slighty more expensive. on a hydraulic jack you can just slightly loosen the release valve where the bed will drop very slowly once the cart is on it.

    Good job John...those little Harbor Freight trailers can be made to be very handy...I made my deck on mine out of a sheet of aluminum diamondplate...

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  10 років тому

      I agree with you Alex, they are very handy to convert them into any type of hauling as long as you watch the weight. I welded my trailer together because I wanted added assurance when I go off road and will be using it to haul some cement bags. I love it an happy with it so far. I like to see your aluminum diamond plate floor, it must look great. Thanks for stopping in, take care. Oh I'm trying to figure out where to install my spare. You have any ideas?

    Nice. About the only issue I see is the taillights being partially obstructed.
    One idea I haven't implemented, but thought about and might work for you, is a bracket up by the hitch to mount either a) an automotive shock aborber or b) a gas charged strut that goes over center. I would make loading and unloading smoother.

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  8 років тому +1

      +l337pwnage - I like the strut idea. Even though I installed some rubber cushions on the front, I think a strut would be helpful. I think I have an old one I kept from my motorhome compartment door.Thanks for the suggestion.

      This addresses the exact question I've had. I have a (very expensive) modified golf truck (with a wooden oak rear bed). It was the noticeable "slam" for the loading and unloading that concerned me. I'm just to the stage of painting a rubber coating on my 5/8" plywood. But, for all of the banging problems I anticipate, pool noodles seem to come to mind as a "cure all." I am considering just putting a couple of pool noodles under the rear of the trailer to absorb the "hit" when backing down and a couple of short noodle pieces in the two tongue cradles to absorb the shock (with the truck on) when the trailer comes down to level. (and maybe that would be enough.... after all, simple is usually the best way) But, if a gas spring was installed on a tongue cross piece up to the trailer, it seems to me that it would only be valuable after you back off of the trailer to keep the trailer from smashing up under the truck.... then, slamming down onto the tongue. For that purpose, I'd love to see a design for it. But........ an easy procedure for pulling off of the trailer might be to back off (down to the final few inches.... set the brake.... get out and support the front of the trailer so after you back off fully..... the trailer won't bang down?? No gas spring engineering..... just a little common sense.

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  8 років тому

      +ThePianoMan1953 - Hi PianoMan, I like common Sense :-)The noodle idea is great. If you watch Part 3 I installed rubber pads on the rear of the trailer made out of conveyer belt material and it helped immensely. On the front I have experimented with stopping a few inches before the front tires release the bed and supporting the front of the bed with a flexible stick so it doesn't slam and also inserted some thin rubber inside the two channels that land on the hitch channels so it absorbs some of the slam on it. I also had a helper hold it up as I come off the bed and let it down easy. Its simple. But I may play around with the strut idea when I have some time LOL. It would be an interesting project. Thank you for the great suggestion about the noodle, its an easy and simple way to solve the slamming.

      Hi Frank, this was one of my first videos that I almost took down LoL there’s a lot of controversy on the safety. I don’t go on long trips with it and there’s no issues I had with it but if you look at the thumbs down and some comments it’s like if I built a rocket LOL. I’m all for safety but I guess I’m missing something. Thank you for the comment Frank.

    • @RVerFrank
      @RVerFrank 6 років тому

      I see this as a "could be application" for these type of trailer platforms. Obviously YOUR design safety margin criteria relative to YOUR application is what drives this project or any of our homemade projects. Therefore monitoring performance tolerances along with maintenance and any followup modifications are assumed. It was nice to watch someone else working and the soundtrack was a killer, lol.
      PS, Engineers are always critical of someone else's ideas which can make for a better outcome.🤙🤙🤙

      Now that you mentioned it. I did not take In Consideration that the thumbs down could be coming from the compitition, hmmm, O well, it gets views LOL. The only thing I regret is not extending it an extra 4 inches to haul other items like plywood and other long construction supplies. Thank you for the input Frank, I can always count on you for and honest opinion.

    Minute 4:45 shows a wobble on the left side trailer wheel. Recommend not slamming the trailer back and forth with the rocking feature like that as it can't handle impulse loads. Maybe use a jack or some other trick to rock it more slowly.

I'm looking forward to build a motorcycle trailer for two street bikes; do you believe, out of your personal experience with this particular one that it would be a candidate, or should I keep-on searching? Does it do highway speeds without worries? Are the wheels attached in a decent manner to the trailer? Well, more then one question, sorry (LOL)

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  10 років тому

      Hello Juan,
      The main reason I welded the whole trailer was because I preferred expanded metal for the floor and eliminated the folding option since I have room to store it. But I think by bolting plywood it will make it sturdy enough.
      What I would recommend is to at least weld the tilt pin brackets that hold it from tilting, for extra insurance and the hitch bracket, just incase.
      Of course it's all about what you haul with it.
      Good luck

    Awesome idea but seems like that’s a hard hit on the hitch when all that weight slams down on it

      It’s called expanded metal. They sell it at any metal supply warehouse near you. I believe it is 11 or 12 Gage.

    I can't believe you couldn't buy a regular pre-built trailer cheaper than putting all that work into that

      Thank you for your great comment Bob. How much do you think was spent on this trailer and how much do you think a pre-built cost. Another point is Regular means cheap. I built 2 more just like it for friends.

    John, what was your reason for extending the tail end?

    • @JohnCRV
      @JohnCRV  9 років тому

      +Seth Chidester - the golf cart foot rest would have been hanging out of the trailer. It also minimized the incline when climbing up. Less pitch.

    Am I the only one who can't read the shaky subtitles in this 1993 quality video? To top it off, the words in the shaky subtitles were misspelled. Terrible video, but nice job.
