  • DALKHAI is one of the richest folk dance of Western Odisha. In ancient days nature worship was prevalent in this region. DALKHAI DEVI was the prime deity who is the first SHAKTI DEVI. The indigenous people offered DAL or branches of the trees to DALKHAI DEVI during her worship to appease her. At a later stage this DALKHAI worship was transformed into PICTURE or IDOL WORSHIP of Ma Durga. On BHAE JIUNTIA, which is the austere fasting by sisters for long life and well being of brothers, the UPASI (fasting) sisters danced DALKHAI on the day time which was a cultural homage to DALKHAI DEVI and to surpass the pains of fasting. During DALKHAI the sisters sing DALKHAI song and the PANCHA BADYA (Dhol, Nishan, Muhuri, Tasha, Jhanj or Jhumka or Timkidi ) or GANDA BAJA artists play their beat, air and metal instruments. Dalkhai dance by the fasting sisters during BHAE JIUNTIA worship is still prevalent in Kantabanji, Muribahal, Turekela, Khaprakhol areas of Bolangir district and Paikmal, Jharbandh, Mandosil areas of Bargarh district of Odisha, India. This video was taken on date 12th October 2016 on the BHAE JIUNTIA day by Satya Prakash Sahu of CHHAENRAA KUTUM, KUCHIPALI, a premier research institute for preservation and publicity of Western Odishan Culture. The dancing team members were the UPASI BUHENs (fasting devotees) of BHAE JIUNTIA MANDAP, BAG DEVI CLUB, Nuapara, Kantabanji. I am obliged and indebted to Smt. Droupadi Bag and other sisters who spontaneously performed the DALKHAI DANCE by their artistic fervor and cultural spirit. DALKHAI artists who perform the dance in original form are still present and they need appropriate exposure and encouragement by the Government of Odisha and Government of India. Thanks again to all the artist sisters of Kantabanji. MA DALKHAI DURGA DEVI bless them all. # Satya Prakash Sahu, CHHAENRA KUTUM, Kuchipali, Dist: Bargarh, Odisha, India.
