  • In our first video we're showing the people at home just how those interesting cleaved/chipped fluorite octahedrons come to be.

    In this video Mark Kielbaso (The Mine Rat) shows everyone how fluorite octahedrons are made from "damaged/scrap" material. The localities of the fluorites in this video (in order of appearance) are Denton Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois and Riemvasmaak, Kakamas District, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. The tools used in this video are a hammer and a chisel.
    Mine Rat Minerals is a division of Open Adit West, we specialize in and sell mineral specimens from all over the world. Visit our website and eBay store, and follow us on Facebook for updates on new lots of specimens for sale and show dates/locations!
    We buy collections! Contact us via our website if you have one for sale!
    Thanks for watching!

    I was just gifted a huge gem collection from an old timer that passed away. All of my previous specimens were natural form. Inherited some of these unidentified. Had no clue what they were. Know I know. Thank you for the info. Now only about 20 more trays of different types of gem specimens to identify. Lol.

      +William Wolffe Thanks William. A lot of practice and blood went into getting decent at chipping. The most important thing is how you hold the fluorite, if you're not careful you can drive shards of it into your skin when you hit it with the chisel.

      @@MineRatMinerals I worked on airplanes for the longest time (about 45 yrs). An aircraft rivet gun holds, by way of a spring attached to the barrel, all the necessary rivet sets- including the seldom used chisel. When you insert the chisel set into the barrel and lightly pull the trigger, you get this very accurate hit. The spring holds the chisel set so it wont fly across the room,

    Not only does this seem like a waste of nicely colored flourite crystals but it also seems a bit fraudulent to me. Selling octahedrons that are not natural but essentially man-made just doesn't seem right. I would think that most people would prefer to have naturally grown crystals rather than have something that has been ground or cleaved. Maybe I'm Wrong ? !!

    • @MineRatMinerals
      @MineRatMinerals  7 років тому +13

      First and foremost, thank you for watching our videos and taking the time comment, we really appreciate it. It is generally understood by the masses that this style of octahedron comes about in this manner, some go a step further and polish them. I assure you we, and most others, would never attempt to market something like this as naturally occurring. As far as it being a waste of the fluorite itself, generally speaking the "scrap" fluorite, not associated with matrix or exhibiting a rare crystal growth habit, is more valuable and desirable to the general public as a cleaved octahedron than in its raw state. I could understand this being viewed as fraudulent if we tried to pass these octahedrons off as naturally occurring, and I appreciate your viewpoint that a nice fluorite has been wasted to cleave an octahedron. Hopefully this has helped to explain our position, and again, thank you for watching and commenting @SnowTiger45 .

    How Kowa makes Fluorite in their lab?? I heard they artificially grow Fluorite and use it in their spotting scopes.
