High Mountain, Flowing River told a true story of impressive friendship that occurred during the Spring and Autumn Period (approximately 770-453 BCE or later). Yu Buaya, a citizen of Chu state, came to serve in the court of Jin state. He was proficient in playing 7 strings guqin. One day, he traveled alone in a boat in the Yangzi river (at present, this area is in Hubei province). It was a night with beautiful moon in mid-autumn. He played his Guqin wholeheartedly. Meanwhile, Zhong Ziqi, a mere woodcutter, who happened to shelter himself from rain, heard the marvelous sound. He was so immersed and intoxicated by it. After Yu Buaya finished playing, he showed himself and expressed his praise and feeling towards the song. This part you described a big mountain, that part I heard the flowing river. His comment surprised Yu Buaya so much since he did not expect that a guy from humble background would understand the essence of his music. Therefore, they established a true friendship out of deep appreciation of music. Later, they promised to meet again next year at the same place to play and listen to the songs together. However, when Yu Buaya came back next year, he could not find Zhong Ziqi despite a long time of music playing and waiting. After asking a fisherman in the area, he was so sad to learn that his friend was sick and passed away. Before he died, Zhong Ziqi requested to have his body buried at the spot where he used to enjoy Yu Buaya’s music. Yu Buaya eventually saw the grave of his friend. He sat down and played High Mountain, Flowing River. When the song ended, the grief was so overwhelming. From now on, who else in the world would understand my song? If no one could, then this Guqin was of no use. In his utmost sorrow and agony, he cut off Guqin’s strings and hit Guqin very strongly against a big rock so that it was broken into 2 pieces
Nowadays, visitor to this spot can see this big rock with a signboard “ Qin-tuan-kow (the spot of the broken qin).
เกาซานหลิวสุ่ย หรือธารน้ำตกเขาสูง เล่าเรื่องราวจริงของสหายรักคู่หนึ่งที่มีชีวิตอยู่ในยุคชุนชิว (ยุควสันต์สารท ราวๆ 770-453 ก่อนคริสตศักราช) หยูปั๋วหยา ชาวแคว้นฉู่เดินทางมาด้วยงานราชการอาศัยอยู่ในแคว้นจิ้น (ปัจจุบันคือแถบซานซี) เขาเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญเล่นกู่ฉิน 7 สาย วันหนึ่งได้เดินทางทางเรือไปถึงแม่น้ำแยงซี (ในเขตหูเป่ย) กลางฤดูใบไม้ร่วง คืนนั้น พระจันทร์ส่องสว่างสุดแสนงาม เขาจึงนำกู่ฉินออกมาบรรเลง โดยมิทราบว่า จงจื่อฉี คนตัดฟืนซึ่งเผอิญมาหลบฝนอยู่แถวนั้น แอบได้ยินเข้า และถูกดึงดูดอย่างมากจากบทเพลงแสนไพเราะ เมื่อได้ฟังจบ หยูปั๋วหยาก็ถามจงจื่อฉีว่ารู้สึกอย่างไร ชายตัดฟืนสามารถอธิบายได้ถูกต้องว่าเพลงนี้ท่านพูดถึงภูเขาสูงใหญ่ และเมื่อได้ฟังอีกท่อนหนึ่งของเพลง เขาก็อธิบายว่า ข้ารู้สึกถึงสายน้ำไหล หยูปั๋วหยาประทับใจยิ่งที่ชายตัดฟืนสามารถเข้าถึงแก่นดนตรีที่เขาเล่น ทั้งสองจึงกลายเป็นสหายผู้รู้ใจกัน ต่อมา ทั้งสองได้สัญญากันว่า จะมาพบกันอีกครั้งในปีหน้าเพื่อเล่นดนตรีและคุยกันอีก เวลาผ่านไป เมื่อหยูปั๋วหยากลับมาอีกครั้ง ก็ไม่ได้พบจงจื่อฉีอีกไม่ว่าจะเล่นดนตรีอยู่นานเพียงใด หลังจากสอบถามคนตกปลาแถวนั้น และทราบว่าสหายรักป่วยและจากโลกไปแล้ว เขาเสียใจมาก ก่อนตายจงจื่อฉีสั่งเสียไว้ว่าให้ฝังร่างเขาตรงจุดที่ทั้งสองเคยนั่งเล่นและฟังดนตรีด้วยกัน หยูปั๋วหยาไปที่นั่นและสังเกตเห็นเนินดินของสุสานเพื่อนรัก เขานั่งลงและบรรเลง เกาซานหลิวสุ่ยอีกครั้ง เมื่อเล่นจบ ความเศร้าสุดซึ้งเข้าครอบงำ นับจากนี้หากไม่มีใครในโลกที่จะเข้าใจบทเพลงของเขาอีก จะเก็บกู่ฉินไว้ทำไมเล่า เขาจึงดึงสายพิณจนขาดสะบั้น และฟาดกู่ฉินกับหินใหญ่ก้อนหนึ่งจนพิณแตกเป็นสองเสี่ยง
ทุกวันนี้ หากใครไปเยี่ยมชมสถานที่นี้ริมแม่น้ำแยงซี ในหูเป่ย จะพบป้ายที่ก้อนหินใหญ่เขียนว่า ฉินต้วนโข่ว (ฉิน=กู่ฉิน, ต้วน=แตกเป็นสอง, โขว่= จุดเกิดเหตุ)
