  • Várzea Grande is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Mato Grosso in the Central-West Region of the country. Located on the right bank of the Cuiabá River, it is 7 km east of the capital of Mato Grosso and occupies an area of 938,057 km². It belongs to the Metropolitan Region of the Cuiabá River Valley and the intermediate and immediate geographic regions of Cuiabá. It is the second most populous city in the state, the 7th most populous in the Central-West region and the 97th most populous in the country, with a population of 290,383 inhabitants according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) as of August 27, 2021 .
The city of Várzea Grande was born from the donation of a sesmaria to the Guanás Indians - considered tame by the Portuguese and skilled canoeists and fishermen - in 1832 by the Imperial Government, hence the name "Várzea Grande dos Guanás". It was an obligatory route for the herds that came from Rosário do Rio Acima (today Rosário Oeste) in search of Cuiabá. However, according to traditional history, its foundation is closely linked to the military camp built during the war with Paraguay, supposedly in the vicinity of the current city center - Camp Couto Magalhães. However, this military camp, which supported the state capital during the war, and which was established on March 15, 1867, by General Couto Magalhães, was located on the left bank of the Cuiabá river, that is, on the side of the city of Cuiabá, close to the Coxipó riverbank.
