  • In July 2022 Becky Kagan Schott and her team were the first to create a 3D model of the Sidewheel Steamer Detroit. The Detroit sank in 1854 in a collision and has been on the bottom of Lake Huron since. It was discovered by shipwreck hunter David Trotter and first sketched by Marine Artist Robert McGreevy. The photogrammetry allows us to see the wreck in its entirety and more! Check out this teaser and the full video will be available next!

Any tips for someone interested in trying wreck diving in the great lakes on open circuit, sub-50 dives logged in mainly warm water? I'd love to explore some of the shallower Great Lakes wrecks, and have dived wrecks like the Superior Producer and Spiegel Grove. Thank you - love your channel!

Thanks os much for watching. Do you have a drysuit? I'd highly recommend one for the Great Lakes. For a newer recreational diver i'd suggest hooking up with a shop like Dive Right In Scuba in Chicago. They run recreational charters and can help with gear or training. You can also look into other dive shops in the Great Lakes for drysuit training and some run trips too!

@@BeckyKaganSchott thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I figured it might be drysuit only (I have not dived in a drysuit before) but was hoping there might be some spots where a 7mm was enough. Dive Right In's name has popped up in a couple of places, so great to hear another recc for them. Thanks so much again and look forward to more of your great content - your photos have been responsible for me wanting to try cold/fresh water diving which I never thought I would do!

@@whaleshark2625 Thank you thats a nice compliment. I hope to inspire others to expand their diving and see more! Please pass that along to Dive Right in if you use them. They are good friends. You can dive a 7mm in some paces and later in the season late july / Aug. It's a good way to start but to really enjoy the dives and if you wan tto keep doing it a drysuit is much better. It's also safer if you want to start doing longer or deeper dives down the road. That will come in time though. Good luck and i hope you check out some wrecks next summer!

@@BeckyKaganSchott thanks so much - it's really inspiring to see expert divers doing things I would have never dreamed of when I first dived in the Red Sea. I hope to continue to grow my experience in new areas of diving. Hope my Alert Diver mag shows up in my mailbox soon!
