- Looking to turbo your BMW E34? Look no further because today I've decided to make an updated build overview of my turbo M50 BMW E34 5 series. A few things have changed with this car since the last overview. I go over every single aspect of the car from turbo specs, engine specs, drivetrain mods, fueling, cooling, etc. I also added in the total cost of this build at the end!

This is one of the most solid and enjoyable of that era. . My M5 E34 after tuning was 400Hp and very reliable. It sounds so sweet @ 3500rpm+ I would not dream of putting a turbo in it. Your car is a Rare Gem!
Definitely agreeed man!! They are great. Thank you!!
@@m3nameisjosh464 BTW your perseverance + passion is what sets you and your car above the rest. Critical qualities that will turbo charge your life experiences. Rock on!
@@petepenn1 thank you man! I really appreciate that!
@@m3nameisjosh464 am bout to buy a e34 but is has 300k km, is in excelent conditions but im afraid that the engine is in mid/late life, what could i do to prepare it for a turbo?
@@camialeh engine out and can do a full rebuild, or just turbo it as is till it lets go, youd be surprised how long it might last
nice work bro, honest man, honest car, luve it :)
your vanos is bianary. just a on off switch. You could run it soooooo easily with stand alone. Just have it turn on and off at set rpm,s ..... Its got to be the easiest thing you could do with a stand alone. I know you would need a tune adjustment, but your talking about way more power under the curve. fwiw vanos usually turns on just off idle , turns back off at 4100. not untill dual vanos came out its variable in the us. ( I think the euro s50 was actually the first variable vanos) vanos only hooks up one way , but the clip has a + and a - sign on it. (hook up vanos back words fries the switch ) Your tial blow off is a 50mm. your vw breather is for a tdi, fcp sells them for less than 20$. What mac valve(boost controller) is that? I've never seen one that brand.
Goood to know! Thank you! I figured its not difficult, these tuners are just so stubborn with that stuff, and I dont even have a laptop with ecu master software to mess with it myself. I definitely will find someone to initiate it though, i need that vanos help for spool. Not sure on boost solenoid, tuners installed it. Called a WHP?
VW OEM part nr - 06A103465 - oil cap breather
I turbo converted my E36 325 back in the day. That was mighty expensive! So I can confirm the high costs and the hard work! But so worth it if you want a really fast car.
Yesssir!!
I feel your pain remaking it over and over again, my E30 M50 Turbo is the same story and i would still change things, lovely car and very enjoyable video to watch, massive thumbs up!
Thanks man!!! Yeah its all a learning process!
i be watching these videos in the family living room, and idgaf, fye content as always
Appreciate you bro!!!!
Beautiful e34. Love this color. Totally true on buying a old car and not working on it yourself, it's going to cost a lot of money. I had a friend who wanted another e30 but didn't work on them and relied on me. I told him dude I'm moving who do you expect to work on your car if you don't got a deep wallet and he was like idk. I just convinced him not to get a old car if he's not going to learn to wrench.
Dude I’ve been there with so many non car knowledgeable friends, like i cant be a personal mechanic for them lol
Good job ❤
Hopefully I will swap a M50b25 in my e30 one day, these engines can hold power using stock parts its crazy
Best motor ever
wearing ur e36 hoodie watching this cant wait to get a turbo on my s50 e30
Ayyyyy! Thats awesome!!
I´m setting up to tubo my e36 325i, same motor, so your video was really helpful, thank you for this straight to the point clear video!
can you tell me how many miles your engine has? have you rebuilt it when you changed the head gasket? or it has stock pistons and stock bearings?
all stock bottom end, no rebuild.
Love that it's mostly stock (manifold, cooling system, driveshaft etc)
In the middle of a NA E28 M30B35 build but man I would love to do a turbo m50 e36 sometime. Seems like it would be stupid fun in such a light chassis.
Not the lightest chassis, but definitely fun
I've been watching your videos for a while, really love this car. What was your reasoning for swapping to an M50tu? I've heard so many good things about the internals of the M50nv.
I didn’t want to go standalone ecu at first, and figured m50vanos can be tuned stock chip while m50nv cant. Learned that obd 1 tunes for turbo dont work well either way
@@m3nameisjosh464 Ah that makes sense. Well at least you have vanos now, lol. And clearly the m50tu internals are plenty strong. I've got a m50nv, hoping to put it on a standalone and turbo it sooner or later.
@silverstone2898 same here got the m50nv. Any tips?
@@rossshkromiuk1574 The M50s biggest weakness in my opinion is overheating. Don't be cheap, replace your water pump, tstat, hoses and rad/expansion tank. If you're referring specifically to turboing it, you should be okay with low boost (
I just bought a 525i because can you personally show me where you get these parts from
Great build! How many psi is your wastegate spring? I have a gt3078 turbo and 650cc injectors and 12psi spring wastegate on pump 93 gas. I will take it to the dyno in 2 weeks. How much hp you think I would make?? M50b25 also stock internals. Ms3 Pro ECU.
I honestly can’t remember my wastegate spring pressure. But at 12psi probably 350-400ish
Sounds awesome!! I'm looking at doing the same set up in mine. What were your numbers?
Awesome build! How many miles have you put on it with that much boost? I am building a 91 525i right now with pretty much the exact same set up so I am very curious how the engine is handling it.
Id say a good 500 hard driven miles, had to put car away for winter so didn’t get too much driving in
@@m3nameisjosh464 Gotcha. Im getting ready to order some turbo Cat cams for my build. I just got the CES copper spacer and cut ring gasket set in the mail 🤪 If you could choose any turbo, which one would it be factoring in everything youve learned?
Nice one bro, im doing de same on my e39, where you found that oil cap breather ?
Volkswagen oil cap breather
Hey I’m trying to find that video of yours where you mention a new intercooler or some kit to keep the oem front bumper look. Or am I misremembering
A few videos before this!
Monster machine bro. Question tho, what's your thoughts on an e39 twin turbo v8(m62/s62) build? Is it feasible?
Im sure its feasible, but likely very expensive. V8 turbos are no joke!
I could imagine.
Would you ever consider making build like that in the future? 😅
@@nathanarneaud5666 maybe once im rolling in youtube money!;)
my e34 525i is a M20 engine
is M20 good to tune with ?
Would you recommend Rktunes as a good tuner for M50s(I know you said you aren’t tuned by them but just wanted to see if you have any experiences with them), I’ve heard mixed things like it can be a hit or miss but I’m not sure if I should, what do you recommend?🙏🏽
This car was rktuned at the beginning and couldn’t get it running right. For obd 1 turbo the only option is a standalone, otherwise don’t waste your time. For a NA tune i have rk on my s52 car and its awesome.
@@m3nameisjosh464 okay so since mine is obd2 it’ll be way better right? I was gonna do the whole swap harness to obd1 with the link g4x but may just do that later on and see how rktunes treats me, thanks!
@@jorgenieto1283 rktune obd 2 tune is fantastic, my buddy makes 500 wheel on a stock m52 with his
How is it holding all that hp on stock internals? I heard the connecting rods are good but people say you need forged pistons for over 450hp and maybe a forged crank if you going over 500. Have you had any problems with the internals?
Nopeee. Good tune is all that matters. Rods are good for 600 torque 650 wheel
what would you say the one time cost of your current 560whp setup is, not including iterations?
About 10kish
How much are those wheels going for . I like them
bought a 95 calpyso 525i turbo is the end goal
Good luck bro!
I got a e34 touring for free was a salvage car got hit in the tailgate only cost was I had to pull the m50 and Trans lucky I got a ford 302 and t5 Trans but I'm gonna do a twin turbo. My only concern is this is gonna be my racecar/driftcar so any tips on the steering system/suspension?
Nice! But i have a full suspension refresh video on one of these cars discussing what i like to do for suspension. Steering stock is fine
@@m3nameisjosh464 thanks the owner gave me another spare tailgate and gas tank and it is getting full racecar treatment (custom made parts, body panels etc) but it's my introduction to everything bmw so I'm just doing research but there isn't much about racing these cars
"tuners" cannot switch the damn flybacks to make that vanos work with emu !
maybe this would cost more, or take a shitton more time to do than an engine swap. But I just got one of these for free and I love building and modding, WIll def take some notes from this vid, Thanks for not engine swapping, thats too easy :D
Can we get an acceleration video josh? I've asked before and I know it's just wheelspin at low speeds but could you do it? Pleeeeaaaaaseee?
I’ll have to do it after winter🥲
stock internals in this engine? are stock internals forged pistons? are there nozzles in the crankhouse for oiling under pistons on this engine? I can't remember what it's called.
Not forged pistons, no oil squirters either
Dream. Engine was rebuilt before putting on the turbo?
Nope. All original
Got a 92 325is non vanos. Should I get a megasquirt or VEMS standalone?
Vems is probably more refined. But Megasquirt works fine
Nice build. Thanks for sharing. I have an e34 with an M50B20 that I'd like to turbocharge though I'd prefer an M5*B25 but they're rare in my area. Is the Precision 6262 turbo in this video too big for a 2 liter engine or is it suitable for both? It would be nice if I could use the same turbocharger for both engines just in case I come across an affordable M5*B25 later.
6262 would be good for an m50b20 id say!!
That turbo, hot and cold side is just a big restrictor in a too small package. Hot side AR 0.96 and cold side 0.70,and you will have a MUCH more enjoyable engine.
I know i need a bigger exhaust housing, but its fun for what it is
@@m3nameisjosh464 sure, but you have no idea of how much more fun,you now are missing out on,by using that restrictor. Please throw some more cash at it,you will not regret!
@@m3nameisjosh464 i said 0.96 hit and 0.70 cold,bu the more i think about it,i would give it AR 1.00 hot and 0.75 on cold side. Just trust me.
Strange how you feel like that’s enough brake I have a 540/6 and sometimes I feel as tho it’s not enough and the cars stock but on nitrous
People always complain about brakes, idk man I just never felt like the stopping power wasn’t enough, but its also not a cornering/track car
@@m3nameisjosh464 I also didn’t factor the extra weight I have up front and probably all around which would probably make it make sense why they’d function better on that model
Hey josh I was just wondering if you could supply a link to the Cometic headgasket? And is it .120 or .140?
Also did you have to do any prep to the block/head before installing the new gasket?
www.cometic.com/products/C14010-142
Always get head resurfaced. Block resurfacing is nice but a good cleaning works
@@m3nameisjosh464 thank you so much bro! It says bore size is 85mm but stock m50 is 84 is it fine like that? Sorry for all the questions bro but I appreciate the help
@@jorgenieto1283 honestly didn’t notice that, im not sure, my mls came with my engine, so i really have no clue where to get the right one
Yeaaa ok imma have to go m50. Got any engines or trannys?
Not currently 🥲
CAN U SHARE UR TUNER INFOS ?
ever find the part number for the oil cap breather?
OEM part nr - 06A103465 - from a 2.0 liter gasoline VW, fits in the oil fill cap location on the valve cover assembly. The oil cap attaches to the top of the breather, and it allows a second breather location for the cylinder head. Additional cylinder head breathing can be beneficial in highly modified TDIs, as it will reduce pressure in the cylinder head and allow oil to more easily flow to the head and the turbo. Most people use this modification with some sort of a catch can.
Not me skipping the engine stuff cuz I’m researching the v8
Give that color the credit it is due! Calypsorot Red!
The best color
do you think that Vw crankcase breather would fit an m60?
As far as i know the oil fill cap is same on m50 and m60 so yes it would
Hopefully it’ll clear when shutting the hood. Im going to try it out. Thanks and great video!
@@ahmadsuliman7739 thank you!
Im gonna be running m50b28 e34 touring around 800whp
Niceee
Did my turbo build on my m52b28 for 1300$ did all the work myself tho
What’s your snap or instagram if you have one I have a e34 with a m50 head and m52 bottom end and I’d love to know your build I can tackle the build myself also
Ig @?
Whats the ECU ? Speeduino?
Ecu master
Where you find the turbo manifold?
Came with my engine
Is there any way I can keep my AC if I drop a turbo in my e34?
You would need custom ac lines
@@MendukoArgento86 yeah that’s what I’m finding out. Have you done it?
Not yet, I gotta take it to this AC place where they do all that, i gotta tune the e34 still..once I get it tuned and drivable then ill take care of the AC
Anyone around here willing to guide me on my e34 turbo project 😅 ! Willing to pay
Is it still running good till this day?
Yes check my recent video
How hard is it to manual swap these
I have a few videos! Its not horrible, not fun
You dont run an oil cooler? Im building a stroker e36 and wondering if its even nescessary. Under normal circumstances if you are able to cook the oil on the street you're going to jail, but i dunno
I see no reason for an oil cooler on this setup
@@m3nameisjosh464 You have never had problems with oil temp on the street? Ever had it get hot? Do you measure it? Just wondering if I should even bother
@@placeholdername3206 never had oil temps or engine temps get hot at all. My buddys turbo e36 is the same way. Street driven/drift car. Only hard track abuse raises oil temps beyond normal
Manifold?
Obx e36
ZF manual? ..or Getrag?
Zf I thought i mentioned, maybe not lol. Getrag would be confetti by 300wheel
