Utilizing an Electric Fence for livestock is one of the easiest and cheapest means of keeping animals in... or unwanted predators out. Sometimes, however, you may find the fence has shorted out, and is no longer protecting your animals... That's called a "Fault".
In this video I'll show you a little tool that makes locating and repairing an electric fence fault MUCH easier.
If you've ever had problems with your Electric Fencing, or just want to watch the easy way to troubleshoot a problem, check this out.
Take care,

Here's a Link to the SpeedRite Fence Fault Finder ( I love mine ) :

Here's a Link to the PATRIOT P20 Fence Charger that I use. This Fence Charger runs on 120v AC and 12v DC for more remote locations. And... it really packs a wallop!

When I was a kid on the farm back about 50 years ago and before these neat tools were invented we used to check electric fences by seeing how close you could get to the fence with something metal to see where it would start arcing, the longer the arc the more juice on the line. I agree with you 100% in that electric fences keep animals in because I have seen cattle stay away from a fence when the power has been out for hours. They have long memories when it comes to getting shocked and seeing the that single wire jut means bad news as far as they are concerned
R MacK "bad news" for me too... IT HURTS :(
GOOD GRIEF! that fence checker is 125 bucks on Amazon! However, if I had as much fence as you do, I would get one too. Subscribed cause you are from Texas. :)
That was a very informative video.
Excellant video!
How does the fault finder work if your electric fence does not make a complete circle back to itself (have a section of fence without electric) or if you have several segregated sections of pasture charged by the same charger?
The elect fence does not work on a "loop".
From the charger, you can run a wire a mile long and stop... it doesn't have to loop back to the charger.
any opinion on the wire fence v's the plastic tape embedded with steel wire, i haven't used the wire type for maybe 10 years but i'm thinking of going back to the wire type because it is easily damaged!
stevencox75 I don't like the "tape" that is embedded with wire. My experience is that an animal could hit the tape part without hitting the wires. I don't care for it. Here's a video I did on the subject:

TexasPrepper2 thanks
I am curious, will the speedrite tester work with electric netting?
***** I'm not sure... but I bet it would. I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't...
Shared "farm boy" experience: My mother was born 98 years ago. As a kid she used to tell me "Don't go down there. It looks "SNAKEY to me!!!" Never heard anybody else use that word till today. =LOL!!!
That is a nice little gadget you got there... Does anything happen when you drop the wire in that grove, just below where it says "Speedrite"? Seem like it's more than just a design choice... Just wondering... Would love to get me one, but I could walk my fence in under 10 minutes.
liboriopsych The groove is where you insert the wire to check for direction of the fault. The probe on top tells you the voltage and amps
Sorry, I meant the grove on the "front", below speedrite... Sorry, I wasn't clear. My fault 😃
Get it? My fault, LOL! Thanks again for the informative videos. Always enjoyable.
I'm thinking the groove has a small coil of wire embedded in it which gives ampacity and direction of flow.
I helped my Uncle put up the old clicker type electric fence many years ago. After he turned the power on a cow just had to see what it was. When she laid that big wet nose on the wire she did a 180 in the air and never got near it again. That would have made a great video! Bernard
***** Yes it WOULD ! :)
One of our horses hit the fence with his neck. dang near turned himself inside-out trying to get away from it, snortin, screaming and farting.. pretty funny
Thanks for the info. If I ever put up an electric fence I'll get one of these. And I'll ask my neighbor if he could use one,-----and stop his cows getting on to my properety
will this work on a pulse wire ?
This IS a pulse wire. I think it pulses every second.
I don't think I've seen a continuously charged wire... but there may be some out there.
It would be nice it that meter would read mil amps so you can check on either side of an insulator.
Ha! If you wife is like mine, she does not need a tester to point it out either. :)
I don't have 5 miles of fence, but I'm gonna get me one.
I have over 2 miles of fence. Trust me, the cost of the better testers is well worth the month, unless you want to walk repeatedly around your fence in frustration.
You bet!
Thanks for the confirmation
Not to change the subject but....how are those PAF berries doing? 😃
my2cents0 Great !
I need to do an update...
I could see a tree on my fence, its the connectors that annoy me!
Im in my upper fiftys I can go about 10 ft of fence line with a weed eater. LOL!!!!
Ozark living off Grid homestead Herd Dat ! :)
So what was your first clue you needed to find a fault?
It wasn't shocking.
The meter said it was very low and that tells me there is a fault somewhere in the line
Are you sure that is drawing 30 amps??????? seems like 30 amps would kill everything that touches it..... Volts get your attention but Amps will Kill Ya!!!!!!
***** When it's working right it's between 5-8 amps. I think the reason it's showing so many amps when there is a fault is because the entire load is being dumped into a ground... not sure.... but you're right... amps will kill ya.
I'm sure that's why they design these to pulse... if you couldn't get away from it... I think it would hurt you... bad.
Thanks for the feedback!!!!
