On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8. - Ігри

Thank you for watching guys. I think the Civilian Airlines in the area adds a different layer of realism that is super interesting. Let me know what you guys think and if you'd like to see similar stuff to this in the future.
F/A Super Hornet VS F 35A?
I like these different scenarios a lot. Keep them coming.
Mr. Owl would you like to see a dogfight between the FW 190 and the Bf 109?
🦉Why yes I would, in fact I would suspend my quest to find out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie pop to watch that dogfight!
Is there a real person flying the airliner?
@@DChrls F/A-18F vc F35C when? It’s been 86 days already man 😅
Can you imagine being the airliner pilot and suddenly seeing a dogfight break out just off your wing?! 😳
Seeing the Sukhoi....followed by tracers out of nowhere! Yikes!
Reminds me of the Ace Combat 4 mission for escorting the airliners, or the Project wingman mission in the air corridor
Inflight entertainment
Knowing that some airliner pilots are ex Air Force I can imagine the pilot would go: Look at these 2 go...man I miss those days....
“I forgot I ain’t flying a viper anymore”
Airline pilot “now using evasive maneuvers.” All the passengers “what?”
Lold
Passengers are all absorbed with grabing for the vomit bag..
"Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has turned on the seatbelt sign. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts, because you WILL GLOC and you'll want to be seated when you wake up. thank you"
tbh I'd call that "Aggressively maintaining separation from traffic"
"dropping tanks is like taking your shirt off before a fight" 😂
Lol
It makes you more aerodynamic
whhatsfunny ?
@@HypePerformanceGroup GS knows that. It also frees up a lot of dead weight for more maneuverability.
@@swordmonkey6635 I meant taking off your shirt for a fight lol, GS is the best -- I would never question their knowledge
I think this is a good portrayal of why no fly zones are a thing over conflicts. Civies shouldn't/wouldn't be anywhere near an engagement like this (hopefully).
This is one of the variants of the events with the Malaysian MH17. The Ukrainian fighter used a civilian aircraft as a cover and put the Soviet Buk-M1 air defense system under attack. At that time, the Ukrainian army was conducting an offensive operation to the border of the Russian Federation along the coast of the Sea of Azov.
Well, supposedly such a scenario happened in the late 80s with the USS Vincennes using a SAM against what the radar portrayed as an Iranian military aircraft. Turned out to be an airliner that was shot down. Problem was the little bit of news footage from the aftermath showed a boat towing a net that was supposedly bodies of the passengers. Thing was, the bodies were all too rigid and even....symmetrical, really looked like a net full of department store mannequines. What gave it away was the flat surfaces where arms and legs should have been attached....no blood, no ragged wounds, no clothes. And our dumbass government paid reparations.
@@engenius11 lol it was not you scrub. Misinformation at its finest. Good try GRU

Normally, I don't usually watch the tacview reviews because I already understand the concepts of BVR fighting but by adding civilian aircraft into the mix, I wanted to watch the review to understand how Crusader used the civilian aircraft to bring you into a zone he controls.
ya I feel like tacview was important in this fight, there were a lot of concepts that needed to be tied together.
this was an amazing scenario to demonstrate! Oh man thanks for taking the time to showcase this!
How was spreading his cheeks while GS slid into his 6, bringing anything into control? I wouldn't agree to let GS start on my 6 if he was in a ww1 biplane and i was in an F22.
Well that's a nightmare scenario but you still came out on top. Those airline passengers got quite a show.
That Eagle at 6:55 absolutely means business. No question its there to fight.
It's like GS said, dropping tanks is like taking your shirt/coat off before a fistfight. The talking is over.
Reminds me of a French movie, "Les chevaliers du ciel" ("The Sky Knights" maybe ?).
There is an intercept of a rogue Mirage 2000 by 2 other Mirage.
The rogue one is hiding just below an airliner to avoid radar detection, before being spotted by one the pilot loyal Mirages who notices 5 contrails for a 4-engine Airbus
Fucking cons give you away every time.
Their radars broken or something?
@@sharequsman596 I don't think so bc in the video the M2K is flying like ten metres under the A340
@@poule1723 If you look at a four plane close formation without a transponder, it will show up as a single target. If the M2K turned his transponder off, and was just under the A340, he would be invisible.
@@johnemerson1363 Which is exactly what he did in the movie. He was right dead center beneath the A340.
pretty sure using civilian airliners as a human shield is on the geneva checklist
7:38 As soon as the Su27 breaks away from the airliner the airliner did a shake and it's like : "Get lost you annoying little jet, don't drag me into this."😆
That tactic was genius. Knowing you couldn't fire until the fight got an little more fair with dogfighting range
It's genius and will make sure you live through most of the fight but it will also land you in a trial at the Hague.
Quite a genius to allow your enemy take your six which guarantees you have 1% chance to shake them off and turn the fight around, GG.
Videos like this could extremely benefit from a "airliner window pov" camera shot, especially for the first engagement with guns lol could you imagine how many smartphones would be glued to the glass
How many pairs of underpants were soiled.
"The AMRAAM will go pitbull on anything it sees"
And it would probably be an airliner. Those things have no RCS reduction because they want to be seen by ATC radar
Another very good point. The airliner being so big would increase the chances of being the first thing the amraam saw
Hey GS!
I really appreciate all of your hard work that you put into your content. I have zero experience, knowledge or understanding when it comes to fighter jets, or flying in general, but after watching many of your videos I now can at least track what’s going on. Thank you, seriously, for taking the time to explain so clearly what goes on during and after a dogfight. I’m now looking to get into DCS myself.
You, my friend, have earned my subscription!
u
got f-16viper box70
DCS is literally free to play and you can fly it with an xbox controller. No need to purchase fully fledged modules for 80$ either and you can go with simplified stuff. If you're not sure what to buy, standalone version lets you test every module for two weeks
This is kind of similar to undersea combat, where a guided mk48 torpedo from a USN sub can either track a Russian or Chinese warship...or it could be heading towards a civilian cruise liner or cargo ship. The essential part of keep wire guidance and positive ID and lock on the enemy even during evasive maneuvers against counterfire completely changes the whole situation.
This is actually a question I've had for a long time is if a civilian aircraft ever somehow got caught in the middle of an active warzone. Apparently they have in DCS.
mh17?
One of the causes of the Itavia Ustica crash might've been a Mig-23 using the airliner as cover, look it up.
Quite a few instances.
GS should Invite Petter Hornfeldt from Mentour Pilot on his channel and ask about that.
Lufthansa 747 somehow triggered memories of a Hornet and a storm :D IYKYK
an OG subscriber. I was wondering how many people would remember that video from this one.
@@GrowlingSidewinder it's the video that introduced me to this channel I think :)
@@GrowlingSidewinder Not just my first GS video but first DCS overall. Been subscribed ever since.
I’m thinking Crusader may have lost situational awareness. While he was protected from your long range shots, you were probably in the radar shadow of the airliner he was hiding behind.
Radar shadow would explain the lost lock and lack of second R-77
there are reported incidents like this. they happen world wide many years now. crusader maybe was expecting for an ID or ghost. in the scenario no one should shoot in the beginning. just an opinion.
This remind me of the French movie about the Rafale. Someone steals the demonstrator Rafale and flies it away at the air show. Everyone rushes to find it and other fighters see it almost hugging the bottom of an airliner to make it appear like 1 radar contact. Would love to see you try to recreate it (unarmed vs armed)
the movie you say is Sky Fighters (Les Chevaliers du ciel).... and it is a MIRAGE 2000 the aircraft. no rafale in the movie at all.....
@@lioportman5073 thank you! I've been trying to remember the name for a while. Been a very long time since I've seen it
@@jasoncrawford4929 surprise: if you know French, you can find in by the same name a 3 season , 13 episode each season , series with the same name. 1967 and Mirage III in play.
You can find it the series I mentioned in UA-cam , online
Fight Mission with civilian airlines as a bonus target ?
Gotta remember project wingman
This episode was great as it did something completely out of the ordinary.
I hope that you can come up with some more completely left field scenario's in the future. 😀😀😀
I'd never heard of DCS until this channel was recommended to me, and I don't understand how. This is sick.
Could be a useful for attacking a ground target with a standoff weapon- fly in the airliner's shadow (it may not even know you're there) and all an interceptor can do without endangering the airliner is come up from behind and watch. Good plot for a 1970s TV movie.
Liked the dilemma aspect to this scenario...hmmm shoot or don't shoot!?
Love the tacview debrief. This dogfight basically started out as a knife fight in a packed elevator 😂
Putting the fear of passenger aviation in me again with one dog fight
Man I don't even play DCS at all or really any sims/games, but these videos just relax the hell out of me!
That airliner is thinking "Why in the hell is there a flanker forming up?"
The obvious next step to this type of scenario is give the Flanker a target like an AWACS to shoot down or an airfield or high value target to bomb and see if you can protect your asset while not hitting a civilian in the process and the Flanker can just go crazy and do whatever.
That was definitely an interesting scenario. I would have never thought to introduce a scenario with so many civilian aircraft in the area.
Bet that airliner pilot was a bit spooked seeing cannon rounds go past the window.
That is right out of a Tom Clancy book.
I love the F-15! Love seeing more in the last few days!❤
I actually never understood how good an f15 compares to other fighters in a dogfight, i can only suppose that it's great at out rating thanks to its thrust to weight ratio.
F-18 or a Flanker will do better for sure but this pilot was kinda messing around whole time
@@AlenB29 yeah, but you can't underestimate the eagle too, it can do some unexpected things positioning it's nose
The F-15 has a very good radar and can get both very high and very fast, which are the parameters you need to extend your missile range in BVR. It is a very formidable dog fighter but as an element in a bigger picture they can do amazing things. It’s not always correct to look at the plane by itself in a vacuum
Weight*
@@alexlohan2988 yeah but still we're talking bvr, id like to see if gs can show what the f15 can do in a dogfight a bit more in depth.
For me, the "Flanker" series to me looks like Sukhoi tried to blend the F-15 and F-16, or F/A-18. They did a pretty good job. You have the LEXs of the F-16 and F/A-18, and the thrust to weight ration close to, or exceeding the F-15.
Civilians on that airliner: 👁️👄👁️
I’m loving the interesting new scenarios you’re trying. I noticed that you always do BVR fights under VFR conditions. I’m curious how the fight would change under IFR. Not sure if it would be riveting content for UA-cam, but just a thought I had. Confirming the kill with black smoke and tallying the bandit if you get to the merge might be an interesting challenge.
cool engagement.
Can you imagine the passenger experience when that Lufthansa started slight evasives?
That tactic has been employed by "RedFor" countries for decades. BluFor countries have always maintained a no-shoot and stand off policy in those situations and RedFor has historically taken advantage of that.
We need Mig-29 vs. SU-35 again, but this time with differential thrust to see if that makes the difference.
This puts me in mind of Crimson Skies (PC), where lots of the fights were set around dirigibles and other obstacles, including friendlies/no-shoots calling for precision and moderation in fire.
I suppose that was also a trope in lots of space "sims" such as Descent Freespace, Wing Commander, Starlancer, and Project Sylpheed on the 360.
Passenger in seat 34C comes out of the bathroom asking, "hey, what did I miss?"
This was such a cool video lol. I liked the different situation than a normal BVR engagement
Very interesting scenario. First thing to that came to mind was "So much for pushing him with the AMRAAMs". Excellent video, good job for keeping it fresh GS.
This is why civilian airliners avoid contested airspace as much as they can. There have been a few airliners shot down being in the wrong place at the wrong time and SAM batteries not identifying their targets properly.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the cabin, this is your captain speaking. If you look off to the left, youll see a fighting jet flying in close proximity. So please go ahead and return your trays to the upright and locked position, buckle your lap belts, and prepare to become an international incident. Thank you for flying Luftwaffle (whatever) airlines."
Reminds me of hiding below fishing boats in Cold Waters. You should definately try it if you're into modern subs.
I imagine the German Chancellor is going to be sending a VERY strongly-worded message to the Russian government over this incident. Using civilians as human shields in combat seems like accurate tactical strategy for the Flanker pilot in this scenario, given what we've seen of the conduct of Russian forces in Ukraine.
back at it again with the amazing creative scenarios, keep it up!!
What a bizarre encounter - so interesting!
Really excellent video! Love the ongoing commentary, and then the expert-level tactical debrief explanation after the action.
Really well done - Thanks for this GS!!
Being a window seat passenger watching those tracer rounds go by would be way total cool!
The movie “L’chevliers Du Ciel” (sorry for mistyping that) has a scene where a Mirage 2000-5 is hijacked and the rogue pilot hides under an airliner while switching a “frequency” to hide from radar
bro i was thinking the same, great movie tho, in english you call it "sky fighters"
I love the break downs of the fight keep up the good content!
Okay, THAT's something new and exciting! Real world complications.
Imagine being a passenger and watching this happen outside your window. That would be one of the coolest bar stories.
In a situation like this, if you *absolutely* have to kill the bandit and getting close puts you at a disadvantage, I would first at least try engaging him with a severely restrictive AMRAAM, before he gets too close to the airliners.
(i.e. Restricting the valid targets that the weapon may track to *ONLY* include the signatures of the exact type of aircraft that my sensors are indicating to me. Yes this makes the weapon much easier to defeat, but if he isn't paying attention or doesn't have the ECM gear to do so, the missile will safely find its mark.)
An AIM-9x, or similar Staring Array sensor, also won't ever lock onto an airliner in a situation like this as they compare what they "see" to a reference image of the aircraft and also actively filter out any heat sources that are hotter than the relevant Turbine Exit Temperatures it expects to find.
That being said, once he gets within a 1000" of the Civie, the risks start growing exponentially. Even with the relatively small warheads on modern fragmenting heatseekers.
Love the video! Perhaps show us some more engagements using weapons outside of their "typical use case". AMRAAM is very capable up close!
the 747 was like "splitting the throttles! ... oh wait"
Growling Sidewinder: "We're gonna have to be careful with the missiles, don't want to pit-bull an airliner". *Sends a missile directly at the airliner formation*
Seeing how close he was, the explosion almost definitely would damage the airliner.
Awesome tactic, even if the missile could differentiate who the target is, you still can't fire.
unique tactic, still a warcrime
Imagine your sleeping but you wake up to loud noises so you look out your window and see a dogfight
interesting idea GS you always blow me away with your creative ideas keep up the good work
Just imagine being on an airliner and seeing that. Would be scary asf
I assume the airliner intercom automatically started playing 'America F*** Yeah' when the F-15 showed up
That was a great video. Awesome to see some unique scenarios.
I was 100% expecting the airliner was gonna try and pull some kind of crazy turn to scare the flanker away
That was quite a funny video! I laughed so hard at the part when you said "dropping tanks is like taking your shirt of before a fight" if I ever become a pilot im going to say something like "taking my shirt off" if I have to drop tanks :P It was also super cool seeing the F15 come up on the SU 27. It was kinda like the Su 27 intercepted the 747 and the F15 came up and said nope! Do you think we could see something similar to this but with 5th gen fighters???
That was a great fight. You handled the Flanker well.
Top 10 video here. Personal favorite is when jester left you a convertible F14 and you flew home with out him but this one was up there.
That was a really interesting video, thanks GS!
That was hilarious “I don’t know what to do here”. 😂. Great video
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. If you look out the left windows you'll see a live dogfight taking place between an F-15 and a Su-27. Place your bets with the flight attendants and may the odds be in your favor.
Awesome concept for a mission!
Forming on the Civvie was something we routinely did in training ship vs ship engagements.
Not that the F22 needs to but could you make a video splitting the throttle in the raptor?!
"droppin' tanks is like taking your shirt off before a fight" that's a line I'm gonna quote
I love it when you guys get creative!
Very, very interesting video GS, thanks for this! I'd really love you to do more of these, especially applying real engagement rules for such a situation (I'm virtually sure both of your initial sjots were completely against the handbook haha).
Also, it makes me wonder, are there Fox 3 missiles equipped with an IFF or other sensors to distinguish between firendlies and hostiles?
By the way, I think Crusader wasn't aware that you were behind him, but in any case it would have been damn epic if he had performed a cobra and shot a couple Fox 2s at you!
Given Iran is about to get a bunch of new SU-35's originally built for Egypt I think it would be great to see a video squaring off the F-15 Baz against a Su-35.
I love the new scenarios in the recent vids!
5000ft vertical separation
And travellin on different directions. the minimum vertical separation in RVSM airspace would be 1k ft.
not important, but a fun fact lol
Love the videos man, thanks for explaining your line of thinking
The que to the toilet in that airliner would be massive! 🤣🤣🤣
As always GS keep up the great content!
Thanks brother Wilco
I’d honestly like to se s’more videos like this with different planes as well with taking turns on who’s next to plane and who’s not to just strategize even more or something like that. Bht id like to see al or more videos like these
You "took off your shirt" while he "held on to a hostage"
pretty sure this made the passengers think twice if they boarded the plane to Seattle or got on a plane to north korea
Great video. The airliner pilots must be saying “What the F--?” Imagine if you were a passenger watching the fight?
Evwryone them can watch the fight life on tictac and English bookkeepers are accepting bets.
I've wanted a Tomcat Sweatshirt for ever, but never seen one on the store. Great videos btw! I want you to teach me how to fly and set up my controls!
Not sure I could even begin to fathom seeing a Su-27 out of the airplane window
I still find it hilarious that if a missile gets confused after the initial guidance phase it just plays eeny meeny fucking mo with whatever it locks
After 9/11 it was common to see a fighter jet out your window when flying over certain countries. If the pilot didn't respond quick enough it would get pretty scary.
8:47 Nice shot! And camera shot too!
I think you should have gotten back to the Air France, fly in front of him and give him a wing wave saying: " I got your back buddy, you're all good now!"
Meanwhile onboard the 747, passengers are screaming as they witness tracers and a dog fight ensue outside their windows.
never seen a dogfight hostage situation before
the start of the dogfight really similar to the 2005 french movie "sky fighters" , really enjoy it
It would be an interesting BVR in such an environment of civilian traffic where a two ship F-15 v modern aggressor and the rules of engagement only applies to the F-15's. The aggressor has no ROE.
