    2025 date sounds like Supra replacement. Maybe they are not happy with BMW co-op, or they realized there is market for 50k-sports car, but BMW won't continue Z4, so they have to come up with their own. They will keep GR86 till almost 2030's in some markets and then let it either die, or release something new. Either way, both cars would need completely new platform to accomodate hybrid powertrain.

    The way I see it, with the GR86 possibly putting out these numbers I think the supra is either going super car territory (or another alternative, maybe no more RC and the supra fills that spot instead?) or it’s gone and we’re getting a new Celica with maybe a sportier version of the eAWD corolla drivetrain.

    • @markcoopers1930
      @markcoopers1930 Рік тому +6

      Good points. I would wonder how a 2 powertrain Supra, a power-bumped GR86, and rumored Celica and/or MR2 would all fit into the market at the same time. Maybe the MR2 pulls a Miata and is Spyder only, and perhaps the Celica takes the spot of the current 86 but with a liftback and a bit more usability (maybe even lowered in power just to keep economies of scale going and ride out any production contract with Subaru)? Trouble there is then starting to brush elbows with the Corolla...
      I imagine the 4 cylinder Supra gets dropped unless BMW has that in a contract as well.

    • @tbbbo
      @tbbbo Рік тому +6

      @@markcoopers1930 yeah even without a hypothetical celica, Toyota is really padding out its sports car lineup. Since we’re seeing an ultra-small engine for the MR, maybe we don’t even get the mr2 in North America and they give us a new celica instead. If this 2025 GR86 gets the G16 then there really becomes no reason for the I4 supra. Maybe this is being introduced as a like GRMN86 and would replace the I4 Supra? Plus if it’s hybrid that would contribute to emissions requirements so it could make sense.

May not be the case for others, these ones just happen to be.
      Acura NSX was a hybrid supercar, designed for performance and it was pretty darn fast. It was very interesting that the GR86 would have more power now with a Turbo hybrid engine. I hope that they continue to be RWD and have a 6MT available for us enthusiasts.
    The new external design doesn't look that engaging; hopefully, the production car looks better.

    I also heard that the GR86 will be discontinued after 2025. I hope it’s wrong. I definitely wouldn’t pay $44,000 for a GR86. $30,000 to $35,000 is a decent price range but not $44,000.

    To get a 3rd gen GR86 if Toyota and Subaru are going to go their separate ways and there's not to be another BRZ after this generation for Subaru, a GR86 on the Lexus RC platform would be the closest platform for a third generation GR86 with GR Yaris/GR Corolla engine 1.6T 3-cylinder engine.
    I don't think 86 fans would be anywhere near upset by that. Everybody that's complaining about not getting a turbocharged GR86, if it's being put into development in Japan right now to be ready in the next 4 years, you better be ready for it, even if it means going mild hybrid while still trying to find ways to be lightweight.
    If the next gen GR86 is to be on some next gen Lexus RC platform using a mild hybrid setup with the 1.6T engine and 6-speed manual while retaining RWD, you better take it for what it is even if it's going to cost more than the current gen GR86. Be grateful if this is happening for you 86 fans, but always wanted it to be turbocharged. It sounds like a grain of salt, but it appears insiders with connections for Toyota Japan know more than insiders with connections for Toyota USA ever would.

    2025 GR86 will be larger and heavier. It's going away of that back to basics Miata competitor vibe. It'll be in the more upper luxury GT cruiser category. For sure that's what all those wanting the car to have turbo ( and now plus hybrid ) are asking for a long time.

They did that with the old celica and the corolla hybrid fwd was faster than i expected. Maybe tune it a bit more to get more power and less efficiency. That would be awesome!

    Despite the internet’s cries, for gen 2, Toyota doubled down on what made gen 1 great and fixed the issues it had. They ended up with an amazing car because of cost restraints and an understanding of what the 86 is suppose to be. The Supra is also a great successor to what made the OG Supra great. These rumors does not sound like Toyota would call it 86. They won’t pull what Honda did with the integra

    Just let the 2.4 breathe. Give it a moderate and reasonable supercharger. Then simply improve the ability for the stock motor to handle the extra stress in compression.
    This is such grade one tech. Let the car be what it is as it will be the last of its kind.
    That 2.4 motor could push from 225 hp to 280hp with more torque. All this with little done to the heads and nothing given up in weight. Just makes perfect sense.
    But oh no…

    I saw both the GR Yaris and the Crown at Miami Intl Auto Show. The Yaris looked like a cheap econobox boy racer with Ebay plastic aero peel and stick add ons. Target: parents buying a car for their kid to go to college. The Crown a Lumpy old style car to take place of Avalon on tall SUV tires. This car doesn't know if its a sedan or a chopped SUV with a trunk. Target: Baby Boomers that can't decide whether to get an SUV or a Sedan.
